I am continually adding new little gardens to my killer hill. Someday all the crabgrass will be gone and it will be all flowers !.....someday...... This is my before picture, see the little church bird feeder through the forest?
I had been planting snippets of ajuga in there over the past couple of years trying to get it to take over. Well, needless to say, the crabgrass won. So I pulled out the big guns, or should I say spade, and got down and dirty with the grass! And a short 4 hours later..... and I'm finally getting there.
That's starting to be a nice looking area. Looking out from there...I see all that hill; you mean you are going to dig up ALL of that?!! That looks like a lot of HARD work!! You go girl!!! It will be beautiful when you're through.
This whole hill Shirl. Thats why just a spot at a time! This spot is as big as its getting for now. I did find some square headed nails in this spot when I was digging around. You never know hat will pop out of the hill. Found a small old bottle, hit it with a pick axe, pieces of glass and pottery shards, chair springs...
Wrennie: Whomever cuts the grass will forever be in your debt when you get that hill done---On top of being a very pretty area, there will be NO grass to cut.

Life isn't about how to survive the storm, but how to dance in the rain!! .....
Well, Wrennie, you've got more patience than I. The area is looking so nice, already. I can't wait to see how it looks when the whole hill is done. That will be an adventure to complete!
That is a big job. I have a hillside like that. I knew I needed something big to take up the space.
I started with bushes. I put two Forsythias and rose of Sharon. Two bushes that I had so I could start with no cost. Then I laid black plastic down all summer and killed everything around the bushes.
The following summer I started planting snow on the mountain and some aggressive daylilies, Iris, Chameleon Plants, coreopolis, geranium any thug plants I could find. That took care of the weeds.
Mine is a drop I kept sliding down that darn hill trying to pull the weeds I was getting to old to keep that up. LOL!!!
I think I'd buy about 10 rolls of black landscapers fabric and cover it with mulch and then when you pull it up next year all the grass would be dead! Sure beats digging up all that stuff.
The only problem with the fabric mulch idea is its a relatively steep hill, spring rain with no roots holding it all up and I'd have a big mudslide {not the good drink kind either!} I could do that a spot at a time but then I'd miss digging up all the little treasures buried on the hill. Little antique bottle, glass canning tops {not jar lids, discs made of glass} Pieces of pottery, I started keeping them in a pile, maybe for a mosaic stepping stone ?? I should take a pic of my treaures. The axe head and chair spring werent so fun
When alot of the houses up my road were built they had outhouses. People would drop things in there that were garbage, or bury garbage on their property, or even just toss it on or over a hill. There werent land fills or garbage companies like we have today. You can even find some old "dumps" where people would drop their trash. Lots of old bottles etc. You have to be willing to do lots of digging around in broken glass etc tho to explore those spots.
I have a friend on another forum whose screen name is digger of treasures. She lives in a 1700's farmhouse and whenever she goes to dig a hole to plant something she finds a piece of pottery or something and keeps digging till she finds all the pieces if she can. A simple 2"hole for a flower can turn into a 2 foot by 2 foot hole.
Cool finds Wrennie!! The only thing I find is a sore back and a horseshoe ~is the big piece on the left a piece of pottery?? I like the church you have placed in that area,, it will looks awesome when you have completed it,, A little at a time is the way I would go too, that's is a big project but it will be sooo worth it when it's completed!!
