Hi everyone! I live in Minnesota and have a very shady yard. I have recently become very interested in gardening, and have spent the last three years 'winging it'. This year I'm getting serious. I've spent too much time and (gulp) money to not know what I'm doing. So, I have many questions! Please look for me in the shade.

Hi, You didn't say if you lived in northern Minnesota zones 2&3 or southern zone 4. There are a lot of shady plants. Some flowering plants for zone 4 are Poker Primrose hieght 12-24 inches tall, Wood Poppy 18 inches tall. Some that are are hardy to zone 3 and would be hardy to zone 4 are the Astilbe's in Lavender, Pink,Red,White 14-18 inches tall,
Blue Columbine 24-36 inches tall and the red and white Bleeding Hearts. There are also so many textured plants that do well in your area. I myself thought I was doomed when the family tree grew bigger and bigger and my sunny garden became smaller and smaller, but I found some wonderful plants for the shade and I love them. Good luck with your shade garden, let me know how you make out.

I'm in zone four - thank you for the ideas! I have some bleeding hearts, many hostas, lily of the valley, lamium, creeping Jenny, and some astilbes. I'll have to Google the Poker primrose and blue columbine.. Thanks!

zone 4 as well here. Also Jacob's ladder, silver mounds, coral bells, goats beard, and ferns.

You are welcome I love to help where I can. Nana taught me to get my hands dirty and something else to remember even though you are in a zone 4 if you are planting up a against a house or building that emits heat you could tempt fate with some zone 5 varieties because the soil temp will absorb some of the heat from the building and mulch away after the first solid freeze. I grew plants that should not have survived my zone but they were planted up againts my home and in a protected corner and they kept coming back year after year with more vigor. Experiment and have fun.
That's what's gardening is all about.
