I FINALLY got out to get a Oriole feeder. I have just finished putting it up. The bad nesw is that the last time I have seen an Oriole is Saturday (the 12th). Does anyone think I have a chance of them still being around??

I have read that they come around about May 1st so I am assuming I should have had the feeder out then already??? why

They should still be there as long as they weren't just passing through on their way somewhere else.

Thanks--I can hope then---I am concerned because a friend of my moms said they will not stay unless there are horses in the area so they have the "proper" material to build their nests with __apparently they use horse hair--I wonder if they would use dante` hair

FYI: Dante` is my 9 yr old "puppy"

well the Oriole's are nowhere to be seen but--I have a cute Downy Woodpecker that loves to eat at my Oriole feeder.

I thought that was strange until I read in a "Birds & Blooms" yesterday that they do that. The comment was complete with picture. Up till then I wondered.

Yes, Downys appear to have strong sweet tooth. We were finding dozens of trumpet vine blossoms torn off the vine lying on the ground with neat round holes punched where the nectar collects. We finally observed the culprits. Downy Woodpeckers were punching holes in the blossoms to get at the nectar and then when the blossoms were empty, would pluck them off the vine and drop them on the ground.
I have often seen them raiding the hummer feeders for nectar, too.

When it comes to Orioles eating at a Hummingbird feeder---the opposite is happening here---the hummers I have decided that the oriole feeder was just as good to eat from as the hummingbird feeder.-- bop

apparently my memorial Day gift was a male Oriole that came to feed at my Hummingbired feeder and NOT my oriole feeder.--But that was ok with me, as the hummingbird feeder is closer to my window.
