hi

i just bought 2 strawberry plants at Lowes and am going to plant them in a long window box type planter. Do they need a lot of sun? What temps can they withstand?

New Gardener.

Yup, they need sun. Don't plant them deep either. They don't like the cold.

hello Lavandula
I used to spend my childhood summer holidays working on strawberry farms in the Scottish lowlands and they are still my favourite fruit! If you are growing them in a container i would mention two things:
use fresh soil, as they seem to be susceptible to picking up infections from old stuff.
Also, i wouldnt overfeed them with nitrogen feltiliser as you'll get loads of leaves, which will shade the berries, taking them longer to ripen and, as this also affects air circulation, might make them go mouldy (botrytis).
Hope you get a tasty little crop!
