Dear All

I am a newcomer and I live in HK. I had a pot of Aloe but it turns brown and the leaves become thin. It is early summer time and the weather is about 28oC to 30oC. What I should do to save it?
thanks
Aloe

If it's outside and getting a lot of direct sun, this could be normal and ok. How brown? All aloe change color in direct sun from green to tan, brown, red, olive, purple, ..., depending upon the species and how much sun/water they get. Do you know what kind of aloe you have? You could give it a bit more water if it's getting really dry, and tell us how much sun and what kind of pot and drainage it has. Yes, a pic would be very helpful.

Dear All

thank you for your reply. I live in an apartment and put it in the balcony. It should get a lot of sun shine. My friend gave me as a gift and i don't know what kind of aloe it is. It turns nearly dark brown and the leaves sink. I put some stone at the lower part of the pot and put the soil on the top. I am trying to borrow a digital camera and send the pix to you. Many thanks.

Does the pot drain? This is important.

I have had this same problem over the years, it sounds like it is getting too much water. Pics would be very helpful to see if it looks like some of mine did. Mine stays in the house during the winter where I water mine once a month, when it is outside in the summer heat and sun I water it every 2 weeks. It is huge and multiplies as fast as a rabbit lol. Hope this can help a bit.

I have tons of Aloe different sizes and types. The common aloe shouldnt be in direct sunlight if it is really hot cuz it will burn the tips. I have some large Aloes in direct sunlight and the sun gets pretty strong here in San Antonio and the tips of those are burned. It doesnt kill the plant but makes it look not so nice. Maybe moving your plant to a more shadier place? Try it; couldnt hurt.
