This was in my apple tree - freaked me out. I cut off the branch and burned it. It looked like layers and layers of webs and worms in between each layer. Gave me goosebumps!

Those are your common variety caterpillers. We used to play with them as kids...let them crawl all over your hands and arms and stuff. What fun! (eeek!)

I saw those at school, took pictures of them...I think they're cool to watch from far but get too close and I'd freak out! they are tent caterpillers.

Helping the world one seed at a time

When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant. Mary Ann LaPensee

Yup, tent caterpillars for sure. There seems to be more than usual around this year.

Exactly what I was going to say - I cannot believe how many tents I am seeing around here this spring!!! The sad thing is... they are killing the trees that they build the tents on here - the leaves are completely stripped off of most of them. We had 1 in our backyard last year, but they are ALLLLLL over here - as far as we have driven in any direction! Fortunetly, I haven't seen any in our yet... yet!

For whats it is worth, tent caterpillars have "boom" years depending on the environmental conditions, and while they surely can defolliate trees they generally do not kill the tree unless the tree is stressed or the caterpillars hit year after year. The purpose of the webs are to provide protections for the caterpillars and to provide a "structure" for the cacoons. Hope this is of some interest.
