Hi, new to the forum, old time planter and gardener. Moved to new area near Rockford/Cherry Valley in Northern Illinois and need help finding plants that will grow well on the south side of my house, good dirt, but next to concrete basement and vinyl siding, beige in color, full sun and hot. Boxelder bugs love it! Any ideas? I don't believe the soil is real acidic, haven't tested it yet. Thanks for any suggestions!

Are you interested in woody perennials, sub-shrubs, foliage or flowering perennials, annuals? Do you want form and foliage thru the year or plants with foliage that die back over winter?
Do you have a water source close to this area?
A clue to the direction you might be leaning could help posters offer suggestions.

I know what you mean, I'm zone 4. Have you given any thought to roses?

I am looking for something that is low maintenance, flowering or colorful, watering is not a problem. I'll haver to check out the ideas so far... roses or the barberry bush could work. I've never had roses before ever, are they finicky?

Floribunda roses are the best and low maintenance I find. I love mine.
