I have rooted coleus in water. I think it took a couple of weeks. I dont remember exactly. I have also taken coleus cuttings and put them directly in potting soil, water like you would an established plant, and they have done well. I think the purple passion took about a week or two to get roots too. Look at the palm of your hand, now without moving your hand point your fingers at yourself. If the roots look like that {{ :) not as thick as a finger tho'}} its ready to pot.
the purple passion can be easily rooted in water or soil. in water it should take about a week to 10 days for roots to appear...let them 4-5 days before potting.
never did coleus. never did pothos either...i seem to remember a thread about it a while ago...iirc, it takes a couple of weeks for pothos to get roots.
rooting will happen a little sooner if you put some food in the water (i use peter's and make it up half-strength, just a half-tsp of it in the container i have something to root in is enough to spur the root growth).
if you're going to put the cutting directly in soil, you can dip the cut edge into some rooting hormone and then plop it in the soil.
