Your Mommy bird is an Eastern Phoebe, a member of the Flycatcher family and an insect eater. I don't know if she will reuse THAT nest but she may nest again on your porch. That is an EXCELLENT bird to have around. Their song is, "FEE-bee. Fee-BEE?" Like a mother calling for her daughter named Phoebe (Hence the name, Eastern Phoebe).

Phoebes very often use the same nesting spot. I dont know about the nest itself though. My barn swallows at work will reuse a nest though.

I'd say she is reusing it. too. I didn't know they would do that. I'll make a note of it.

Thorny:
do young cardinals NOT have a tuft on their heads---or just a small one---I have what looks like a female cardinal coming around, but with either no tuft or a very small one--hard to tell

That sounds like It Could be a young Cardinal. I am WEAK when it comes to baby birds and for that reason have started trying to pay more attention to them Try doing a Google Image Search on baby, juvenile, or immature Northern Cardinals and see if that is what you saw.
