I have just asked for help on the subject of growing potatoes ... which got me thinking - I am actually Scottish and we often call these things 'tatties'. Scots (like everyone else I think) have their own local words for all sorts of veggies and fruits, which are sometimes difficult for outsiders to decipher - for example, we call turnips 'tumshies' or 'neeps'. I would be interested to hear if you guys across the pond have your own interesting/amusing local/regional alternative names to the more boring greengrocer versions of the stuff that keeps us all alive and healthy!

Here in the Southeastern U.S. we call potatos, Taters, and tomaoes we call, "'Mayters". We don't have any special names for Turnips but we LOVE to boil the green tops and eat them. We call that Turnip Greens. We eat many different kinds of "Greens" here in the Southeast. Another traditional meal we have here is Pinto Beans and Cornbread. Cornbread is made from ground corn or corn meal as we call it. It is made into a batter similar to bread dough and then baked in the oven until it becomes bread.

Hi Starfish! Welcome to the forum!

Here in the midwest US we usually call them potatoes but at times call them taters. I can't think of any unique names that we have for anything! I think we pretty much call everything by what they actually are. It is interesting though to see what everybody else does.

I also love corn bread. I'm sure mine doesn't compare to yours though Tamara! lol kissie

I can't think of anything but spuds, maters and taters either.
But I think I'll adopt "neeps"-that's a cute word !

grin

yES,

Dig a trench about 3 inches deep, space them about a foot apart.. Make sure each spud has an eye that is growing.

If your spud has more than one eye, you can cut it in pieces and sow each one seperate......

THey hill them as they grow.
Good luck..
Oh you can also grow them from skins with an eye. thumbup
