Good morning again. We are going to a conservation area today. It seems our lack of rain has rendered the river beds dry. It will be cool for the kids to see.

Yes very sad. But the good news is not all the water is gone. Just the bottom of the holly mound that has the limestone worked away from the water and the wind.
So what is dry is just between the shore and the rocky hill in in the middle of the river. Really cool though..the kids loved it.
And Carol did not have to make (or clean up) a meal
So yay!

Today I planted pansy's. I think they're so sweet. Also planted a row of radishes. I'll plant another row next week.
Other than that just trying to make Thanksgiving and Christmas plans.

We're having a cold snap but we'll go back up before the cooler temps stay here for a while.
Sunny it really is nice having things blooming all year. My camellias are already blooming and they'll bloom until way after Christmas.

Here is is in the high 60's..low 70's during the day and we'll below freezing at night. "They" say the nights will go back to well above freezing around the end of the week.
I know it is no secret but I " dislike" winter.

Everything is done blooming here. Most of the trees have already lost all their leaves as well. I have to get out on a dry day and start cleaning up the flower beds and prepping them for the next season...but I'm not saying that word.  It is raining today, tomorrow as well in the forecast.

Aw..we had "tiny" strawberry flowers on some in IL just at the edge of the area below my deck I was hoping I might see tiny berries. But nope not really. And now I will say goodnight.

I had started to cut back a few perennials before the cold hit, then I noticed yesterday that since it has warmed up again.....I have a delphinium and a lupine setting new blooms.
The rain is done for a few days....outdoor chores await.

I wish I did live close....but your DH would not like it. The frost is as thick as it gets this morning. I guess it is time to move all the Summer equipment around in the shed and put the Winter items in front.

Yes, it is 32*F this morning with heavy frost but is supposed to hit over 70*F this afternoon, the grands are sniffling and coughing already. We are raking leaves and mulching them to add to the garden today....they are working without even knowing.

They stopped doing the Samaritan boxes here a few years ago at GG's school. They have since 'adopted' the elderly at the local nursing home....they make 'treat bags' for the holidays for them instead.
I got sidetracked yesterday. Indoor chores to tackle today....hopefully.

That sounds like a nice idea. That way about the kids know who they are donating my g to a MN d then the people have something to look forward to. Especially those without family. I think that is a good thing.

Well we got 4/10 of an inch of rain today. Not what I was hoping but hey, I'll take it, even if I do need to water my sage again tomorrow.

Gracious me. It is always something on the work front isn't it? Hardly seems right that the work never stops.
On a side note..I have some ripe tomatoes to pick....they are the cherry variety
I love using those in salads, and the girls love eating the yellow ones.

Enjoy your tomatoes. It's a good thing for cherry tomatoes....if it wasn't for that variety we wouldn't see a ripe tomato on a vine here. Today I need to make GG a set of wolf ears and a tail for her Halloween costume. I wish these grands of mine would pick a costume from a store....but I guess that would be too easy.

Thanks about the tomatoes. The vines are pretty much dead but there are still green tomatoes on the vines. So I am hopeful I can get a few more ripe ones.
Valarie was harried as she has to make Heidi a costume yet. I really need to learn how to use my machine. I could save her all kinds of time and do such for her.

Oh I wish I had some of your rain..
Yes for this time of year, that is definitely "chilly". It is warmer now of course, but the wind makes it feel colder than it is. The temp right now is 66*F.

I sure do agree with you there. Especially since we I have invited the kids over for me a meal this weekend. Then with the weather as warm as it has been I still need to water somethings in the yard yet.

Sure.
I tried a new recipe today...more of a Penuche than a fudge.
It takes 2 and 1/2 cup brown sugar and 1 and 1/2 cups of white sugar, add one can of evaporated milk. Mix well by hand then heat on the stove until boiling slowly. I cooked it on a slow rolling boil until it made a soft ball when dropped in cold water(took about 18 minutes, you CANNOT stir it while it boils). I then took it off and added 2 tbsps of butter and 1 tsp vanilla(still DO NOT stir, just drop it on top). I then sat the pan in a cold sink of water and cooled it for about 20 minutes. Then take out of the water and beat with a wooden spoon until it slowly loses its gloss, add nuts and pour in a greased pan.
It is a prettier fudge than the normal brown sugar kind I make. Hope it tastes better.

I only had 16 kids this year, it seems each year I get less....it's sad. I love to see the little ones at the door. I liked this fudge better than the usual kind. DH said he didn't care what kind I made...as long as he gets a pan for himself.

Your DH and mine are spoiled aren't they? I am going to make a batch for Christmas as well, there is an all white sugar/vanilla kind that I'd like to try. The weather this week is beautiful, more like September than November. I have been outside in a tank top and shorts this week.

I make something called Fantasy Fudge.
That is what my MIL used to make
As it has Marshmallow creme in it it is creamy. Rod loves it.

Mmm, I make a peanut butter fudge with marshmallow cream. I got the recipe from a neighbor, that was the fudge she made to give out on Halloween. DD called me last night asking for my chocolate fudge recipe...I guess fudge is 'on the mind' at Halloween time. What flavor is the Fantasy Fudge?

Fantasy Fudge is semi-sweet chocolate and marshmallow cream. I can give you the recipe if you like.

That's the recipe Julie called about. It used to be printed on the back of the Carnation milk can but I don't remember what it was called.
It used 3 cups white sugar, ¾ cup margarine, ⅔ cup evaporated milk,1 (12 ounce) bag semisweet chocolate chips, 1 (7 ounce) jar marshmallow cream. 1 cup chopped nuts and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Is this the same as yours?

Yep. That is it. IMO TPTB have changed up the recipe, so hang tight on your recipe.
That is the original one. Rod loves it.

We use pecans for the nuts in the recipe....I think it used to call for walnuts though. I am loving this Fall weather, we have had the warmest October ever on record...I hope November follows. I am going to scatter some Rubeckia and poppy seeds today, I got them from the neighbors garden. Her poppies are pink and her black eyed susans are frilly, I hope a few of them take. They need to sit in extreme cold to 'take'.

Oww, the flowers sound SO pretty. I hope they grow for you as well. "They" say that this is a very warm fall for us as well. Temps are on the average of around 20-30 degrees higher. I'll take that!

Higher temps are always a good thing. So happy for you. Yes, it is 67*F out there but the winds are horrid. It's like it is trying to give us a snow storm without the snow.

Yes a few days ago we too had horrible winds. I hate that. I am going to call mi SIL and tell her to come get her leaves. I raked for days and she did not...now hers are here,

Good idea I think I will call all of my neighbors to come get their leaves. We have one tree with very small leaves and one young maple
We should not have all of the leaves we have. " They" can also come and clean out my rocked landscaping. I sure do not want to.

Well the leaves are gone again, the winds have taken them to someone elses yard. We just started getting cyclone warnings to prepare for later this week. The hurricane that is hitting Florida will follow up the coast to us.

Hi Bestofour, what have you been up to lately? Junie, we are getting the storm all in rain and wind....as long as it stays above the freezing point. GG has a Remembrance ceremony at school today. Parents are invited to attend.

Sunny, I went to Kure Beach, North Carolina for the kite festival. It was great. Then spent a night at the NC Outter Banks in Kitty Hawk. Back to work tomorrow.

Yes, here too. I only have/had the few I did/do because when I cleaned off my garden, I took in a few of the nicer green/reddish tomatoes. I just have 2 or three left now. But hey, they are still good.
Oh I so eñvy your trips that you take. Especially the craft shows. I am sure you had a wonderful time.

That is great news, take your time while out and enjoy the whole day....and make sure to buy yourself something.
We got over a foot of snow last night, I have most of it cleaned up...I'll tackle the remainder in a few minutes. I came in the house to warm up and make some brownies.

Brownies are my favorite sweet. GG is home from school today, the teachers have meetings to attend. I'm not sure what we will do for the day, the roads are too slippery to go anywhere. DH got called out early due to black ice.

The kids told me last night that they have just 3 days of school before Thanksgiving. So today. & Monday and Tuesday. I lost a week somewhere....

My freezer is so full that it is taped shut. ~I need a mini freezer to keep in the house...and I could put this one out in the shed.

Ah yes, my freezer is out in the garage
It is just a 13 cu. ft. one. Right now it is stuffed full. I really need to reorganize the food. I do not think I have as much as in there as it looks.
To have 2 freezers would be great!

Yes, My daughter has a 5 cu. ft in her house, it is the perfect size. I shouldn't complain about having a full freezer though, I am blessed to have it.

It was,/is cold here today. I am hoping it gets a bit warmer..and soon. So "they" say..it is 20* colder in this month than is it usual.

Sheri: My mom had a small upright. Not even as tall as a regular fridge. It was perfect but she did need to keep it locked with a key. If she forgot to lock it, it often came open.
