My azaleas have been around for 8 years and always did really well but something happened to them this summer. I'm wondering if they didn't get enough water or if I should have fed them more?

That looks like 'rust'. On top of the leaves, do you see tiny yellow spots? Sometimes you will also see reddish orange blotches under the leaf.

I've had a few to do that and I think it's a fungal disease that won't go away no matter what I do. I think I'm going to have to take up the plant.

We can't grow Azaleas here, they will not over winter. Have you tried spraying it with fungal spray, Bestofour??

Yes. It's something that happens around here once in a while and it will be an entire area. It's cheaper to pull them up than treat and treat and treat again.

In my view, it seem like your azaleas leaves were withered. My friend also have same case, he found the cause is improper watering. Azaleas have very shallow roots that can easily dry out or become waterlogged depending on your watering routine. If the leaves are drooping, you may need to increase the amount of water. If the roots are soft and mushy, you may need to stop watering until the soil dries out a bit.
