Today I dug out the sods to add another row to my garden.....my garden plot is now larger than the square footage of my house.

It's amazing how different our seasons are. The daffs here have been finished a long, long time and people have had their gardens planted for a month or more. Not me. I planted mine 2 weeks ago then left town so it may be dried up by now. Oh well. I'm thankful I have a very good farmers market 6 or 7 miles from my house where I can buy fresh things if mine don't do well.

Sometimes the gardens that are not 'over tended' are the ones that seem to do well. I am down to two small mounds of snow in my yard...they should be melted by the weekend.

Well, my garden is prepped for planting. I plan to put in the potatoes by the end of the week.

My potatoes are up and I've been covering them with dirt. How do you keep yours covered Sunny? The tomato plants look really good this year. I got 2 Cherokee Purple at the farmers market today. I've never tried to start them from seed. Maybe this year I'll give that a try. I also bought a few basil plants because a friend thought he was helping and came and weeded my tomatoes, pulled up the basil and dill that I had started from seed. I didn't find any dill seeds today, will look online. Okra isn't doing so well. I have a few seeds left so I'll put them out tomorrow.

I do the same with my potatoes although this year I am going to try a plot with the straw method as well. Your friend helped you like GG helped me many years ago....she pulled all the carrots on me when she was three years old.

Oh my goodness..sorry for your " helper, " Sheri. Otherwise it sounds like your garden is doing well ! YAY !! I. Planted 3 potatoes, in my raised bed. It is all I had room fir. I have no idea how I am going to keep covering them in soil, and I know it is late to be planting them here but even if we only get a few small potatoes, we will have them, right ?? Sheri: how do I care for and harvest Cherokee Purple tomato ? I am trying one again this year, and have no idea what I am doing. Do I pick them before they are ripe ??

junie, I treat cherokee purple just like any other plant and pick them when they're ripe. They just need to be eaten quickly because they go bad faster than others.

Junie, you can use grass clippings to add to your potatoes as they start to grow.

Junie, you can use grass clippings to add to your potatoes as they start to grow. Yea, I thought so too..and I intended to use grass clippings. Rod vetoed that as he is worried that there could be a chance that I would end up with the Bermuda grass in my raised bed. So no grass clippings. I may use them under my blackberries though.

Blackberry plants are relentless in my garden. I have to constantly dig them up or they take cover. Planted the basil and found and planted some dill seeds. Also found some okra seeds I had saved so got them planted too. Plus we had a great day of rain yesterday. Pill bugs are horrible this year. I’m thinking of breaking out some Seven dust.

I'm having that problem with my raspberry plants as well Bestofour, I am thinking of digging them out and moving them to the edge of my lawn....that way they can run free into the hay field.
We don't have much trouble with those Pill bugs here....I probably just jinxed myself.

You probably did jinx yourself. Sorry about that cuz they'll eat lots of stuff. The literature says they eat decaying matter but they eat seedlings too.

Is a blueberry shrub the same as a blueberry bush? I used to have some bushes but got tired of fighting the deer.

Thanks, today I put the tomatoes and peppers in bigger pots until planting time. Those little cello packs are too small to keep them in until the middle of June.

We ate squash from the garden the other night and green tomatoes and cucumbers are on the vine. Sunny, I’ve been covering the potatoes with straw because they’re growing so fast and the dirt supply is getting low. I also put straw down around the cucumbers and okra and probably will put it around the tomatoes because I’ll be gone for a week and hope it will hold in a little moisture. I did this once before and regretted it because grass sprouted and was uncontrollable. But I guess grass in the garden is better than a burned up garden.

I always ask for straw but around here it must mean the same as hay because I’ve got grass growing in the squash in the straw bales as we speak.
