For some reason I couldn’t add an explanation to the pictures in the post with the pictures.
The first is where I’ll plant cucumbers. The straw bales are for squash and the raised bed for tomatoes. There’s another raised bed not shown for okra. Everything is minimized since it’s just me.

I started seeds indoors today; squash, cucumbers, okra, and put some carrot seeds in the window boxes. I think I'll start some tomato seeds tomorrow.

Sheri, you are making me hungry for fresh veggies.I
I am envious of you. It will be quite awhile before I get to start any veggies...such as it will be.....However, my SIL has begun some onions for me in his garden though. I cannot wait !

Carrots in a window box! Never thought of that. That's one way to keep the soil light. The kids and I planted some seeds last week (melons, peppers, cucamelons, cucumbers) Today I noticed all the cucumbers are up and 1 pot of cucamelons. It looks like one melon is starting to push its way up too. I love starting seeds, so much potential. My Hubby got me a greenhouse (plastic covered - 4 x 5 ft) several months ago for my birthday, so we got it set up last weekend. Now we just need the weather to stop dropping below 0C. Not sure when it's safe to put some stuff out there. It just has my potato bags in it, hoping to thaw out the soil.
May the wind always be at your back and your keel in the water

Sunny I’m not sure what the name of the carrots is. They’re regular size and orange. I’d like to grow some colored ones but can’t find seeds. The carrot tops add a lot to the flower boxes. Good for you on the greenhouse Shani.

I didn't think that carrots would grow well in bagged soil, I think that might be a nice idea to add some to the grands flower pots. Thanks for the idea.

They grow fine in potting soil. I've grown them in straw bales without soil. They're very crisp coming from the straw bales.

I might try some straw gardening this year, we have the extra straw here since we sold our cattle. We used to use it for bedding.
The kids have grown Thumbelina carrots in pots before. They are just an inch long though.

I have a friend in Indiana who digs a very shallow trench, maybe 1/4 in deep, plants seed potatoes, covers with the left dirt, but then continues to cover with straw when the plants start growing. Gets lots of potatoes this way and it isn't as much work as trying to cover with dirt.

She grew her whole garden this way, it was amazing. I plan to try that this year now that we have some left over straw.

I started some squash and cucumber seeds in cups March 30th and left them on the kitchen counter in a pan of water. When I came home today I found that the cukes germinated and grew almost 2 inches. The squash haven't done a thing yet. It's too cold to put these cucumbers outside.

You have to eat too, Sheri. If you have a cool place to keep the potatoes at, keep them in boxes, single layered, not touching, they could keep until well after the new year. PS I used to keep mine in bread totes like a bread truck uses, or in cardboard boxes that I layered with newspaper... Did I mention I put them in boxes in divided by be size ,? 'cause I did.

Scarlet beans are so pretty when they bloom but I find the beans have to be picked very small to taste the best.

Yes, they get tough and stringy very quickly....but they are the most beautiful bloom in the vegetable garden. You'll be amazed at how bright and pretty the blooms are in 'real life'. You can also leave them to get the bean seeds inside for eating(I have cooked them is stir fry's)...they have a 'nutty' flavor I find.

It's amazing how different our seasons are. The daffs here have been finished a long, long time and people have had their gardens planted for a month or more. Not me. I planted mine 2 weeks ago then left town so it may be dried up by now. Oh well. I'm thankful I have a very good farmers market 6 or 7 miles from my house where I can buy fresh things if mine don't do well.

Sometimes the gardens that are not 'over tended' are the ones that seem to do well. I am down to two small mounds of snow in my yard...they should be melted by the weekend.

My potatoes are up and I've been covering them with dirt. How do you keep yours covered Sunny? The tomato plants look really good this year. I got 2 Cherokee Purple at the farmers market today. I've never tried to start them from seed. Maybe this year I'll give that a try. I also bought a few basil plants because a friend thought he was helping and came and weeded my tomatoes, pulled up the basil and dill that I had started from seed. I didn't find any dill seeds today, will look online. Okra isn't doing so well. I have a few seeds left so I'll put them out tomorrow.

I do the same with my potatoes although this year I am going to try a plot with the straw method as well. Your friend helped you like GG helped me many years ago....she pulled all the carrots on me when she was three years old.

Oh my goodness..sorry for your " helper, " Sheri. Otherwise it sounds like your garden is doing well ! YAY !! I. Planted 3 potatoes, in my raised bed. It is all I had room fir. I have no idea how I am going to keep covering them in soil, and I know it is late to be planting them here but even if we only get a few small potatoes, we will have them, right ?? Sheri: how do I care for and harvest Cherokee Purple tomato ? I am trying one again this year, and have no idea what I am doing. Do I pick them before they are ripe ??

junie, I treat cherokee purple just like any other plant and pick them when they're ripe. They just need to be eaten quickly because they go bad faster than others.

Junie, you can use grass clippings to add to your potatoes as they start to grow. Yea, I thought so too..and I intended to use grass clippings. Rod vetoed that as he is worried that there could be a chance that I would end up with the Bermuda grass in my raised bed. So no grass clippings. I may use them under my blackberries though.

Blackberry plants are relentless in my garden. I have to constantly dig them up or they take cover. Planted the basil and found and planted some dill seeds. Also found some okra seeds I had saved so got them planted too. Plus we had a great day of rain yesterday. Pill bugs are horrible this year. I’m thinking of breaking out some Seven dust.

I'm having that problem with my raspberry plants as well Bestofour, I am thinking of digging them out and moving them to the edge of my lawn....that way they can run free into the hay field.
We don't have much trouble with those Pill bugs here....I probably just jinxed myself.

Thanks, today I planted onions and carrots. The rest has to wait until after the full moon in June due to frost.

Thanks, today I put the tomatoes and peppers in bigger pots until planting time. Those little cello packs are too small to keep them in until the middle of June.

We ate squash from the garden the other night and green tomatoes and cucumbers are on the vine. Sunny, I’ve been covering the potatoes with straw because they’re growing so fast and the dirt supply is getting low. I also put straw down around the cucumbers and okra and probably will put it around the tomatoes because I’ll be gone for a week and hope it will hold in a little moisture. I did this once before and regretted it because grass sprouted and was uncontrollable. But I guess grass in the garden is better than a burned up garden.

I always ask for straw but around here it must mean the same as hay because I’ve got grass growing in the squash in the straw bales as we speak.

I ate my first garden tomato today. So good. I've already eaten a few cucumbers and have a frig full of more. Also have squash and okra to eat. Junie, my blackberries are finished already. I got one bowl full and I guess because of the heat the rest shriveled up and died.

I am so happy about your veggies, but sorry about the blackberries. At least you get some though.
I watered my berries tonight. Some are beginning to ripen. I hope the water helps mine ripen. We have had a lot of 98 and higher weather this last week or so. And little to no rain.
Enjoy your tomato.. And all the rest.

Enjoy those tomatoes Bestofour.
I planted my tomatoes in the garden but saved one to plant in a pot. The one in the pot is already twice the size of the garden ones.....I know how I am planting them next year.

True...it might be all foliage and no veggies. That is why I suggested waiting. I want to see for myself what kind of harvest it I get before planning next year So far I have plenty of green as well, with the exception of one plant..That one is called "Mountain Princess"..I hope they taste good !

I hoed up the garden...everything is up now although my carrots seemed to skip in a few places. I think regular seed was better than the pellet type I used this time.

You are very fortunate. We have had 1 inch of rain a few days ago. We have had not more than a drizzle or so for weeks. It is quite sad really. I am SO happy for you, Sheri.

Night before last we had 2 inches of rain and it's pouring today. Unfortunately all this wet stuff is causing the tomatoes to split. Thankfully we have gotten a few nice ones but if this keeps up the next ones will definitely be throw aways.

Got some okra today and cooked it and some squash for dinner and had a fresh cucumber too. My garden has done very well this year. Remember the scarlet runner beans??? The flowers are pretty but I haven't gotten one single bean.

The flowers are prettier than the taste of the beans anyway Bestofour. Of all the beans I ever grew, scarlet were the prettiest but the least favorite for eating. My garden is flourishing this year. I am ever so thankful.

You're right. I should freeze some squash. A friend told me his mother canned it and would boil it in the winter add a little salt and pepper and it was great. Might try that too. Sunny, cucumbers and my yard are great friend. That's another thing I'll miss in the winter because store bought ones just aren't tasty.

You could even prepare it how you like it, them freeze them, when they are froze then wrap them up again to prevent freezer burn.
