I planted a mail-ordered mulberry about 4 summers ago. It was very small, about 7 or 8 inches high still green and soft.
I no longer have the name of it. It now has 4 or five trunks the thickness of a pencil and about 5 ft tall. My question is
about the berries. They are lilac in color but are tiny and bee bee sized. They are each a single ball. I want to know if
in future years they will become the blackberry shaped structure I was hoping for. My concern is that maybe this is a
variety that the berries will not ever change from the way they are now. Presently they are bitter and dry.

Does anyone have any idea on this?

Thanks

Do you have a picture of the fruit itself? Do they ripen darker or stay the lilac or white colour? There are different varieties with different versions of the fruit itself.

I do not have a picture but they do get darker going to more of a burgandy. They
do not get bigger and continue to be tiny individual balls instead of a black or
raspberry shape.

I am wondering if you were sent a 'wrong' order....even a young mulberry does not have bitter, dry fruit. The single bb size fruit worries me, you should verify your shrub with actual pictures with the company you ordered from.

Thankyou. I will try finding my records. I am not sure which site I got it from.
I have purchased from just two though.

Some berries can be poisonous, the single bb size fruit just does not sound right. They should form in tiny clusters together. Being by itself and all of them having the same single fruit worries me. Some white mulberry shrubs(which form lilac colored fruit) can have a tart taste but not bitter.

Thanks for all the input. I was looking in a catalog and saw a picture of what my
bush looks like. When I saw the name I remembered ordering one with that name.
It is an asian Callicarpa. My bad, I don't know why I thought it was a Mulberry. I
do want a mulberry, will order next spring. Wish I would have realized this 4 years
ago. Well they say patience is a virtue.

Ah, that makes sense. You have a Beautyberry shrub....and while they taste bitter, they do make a nice jelly. thumbup

I do hope you get your Mulberry next time. thumbup
