I moved to Ecuador 3.5 years ago and have failed at growing tomatoes the entire time. I own a pizzería and the gola was to provide the produce, or at least a portion of it for the restaurant. Basil and some pepper varieties are the only successes I have had. My tomato plants look healthy but when they start to produce fruit they fail. I started off chemical free and have slowly added chemicals to deal with pests and mold but they haven't effected the results at all.

My tomatoes used to get blossom end rot. I added lime to the soil before planting for several years. Now I crush up egg shells and put in each hole as I plant. It took care of it.

I would like to add that sometimes you can have plenty of calcium in your soil, but if you water unevenly, (way too dry followed by way too wet or tons of water in the beginning folkowed by none at all for a long time, etc.) you can also get blossom end for. The. Uneven watering causes the plants to retain calcium.
