I hope your delivery went well Tina. I dug half the potatoes today, the kids will 'help' with the last of them tomorrow.

How long into winter will those potatoes last, Sunny? My groceries did not come today. It was put off until tonight or tomorrow.

Tina, I'm not sure how long the potatoes will last, I got a lot less than I normally do. They are a different variety than I wanted and the hot Summer did not help much either. Once I have them all dug than I can have a better estimate. I should have enough carrots to get us through the Winter(if I can keep the kids from feeding them all to the horses) The beets are ready to be processed tomorrow as well. Slow and steady wins the race hopefully....my preserve space is nicely filling up.

another beautiful day !!
I went out and watered early as it was so nice outside.....and I also tied up my 2 late volunteer tomato plants. got tomatoes from them as well.
I wish I had a reason to stay outside.

Sheri, the carrots store well in bags in my fridge, I also cut and freeze some. I got 30 gallons of potatoes from my garden.

Good morning! Congratulations on the potatoes, Sunny. That is a good lot of potatoes. You make me wish I had.of found out how many potatoes weight wise I used to grow. I will say they covered my picnic table. That is where I sat them to dry... Horrid headache today. From being outside yesterday I guess.

Good morning. I am trying to figure what thirty gallons of taters look like. I finally settled on six 5 gallon buckets-worth. I can 'see' them now. How do you store them without a cellar, Sunny?

Sorry for you, Sheri. Mine finally got to the place where I thought tylenol would help and it did...I was outside for about 20 minutes today.I sure hope tomorrow is not a repeat of today. I would have loved to have been outside more.....but I do not want a repeat of the allergy problems I had today. I think my body is not used to the allergens here.

Tina, I can store the potatoes in my mothers basement. I pickled up my beets yesterday, that was the last item on the preserving list....so I am officially done. Today is a clean and mop day.

Good morning Tina. You know, I would like it if we just left the clocks alone...in this time schedule. I hate more dark of the evening. But then I do not make the rules...
I took a bath and the steam got rid of the rest of my headache. So yay !!
My dishes and from yesterday are washed, laundry is divided and the first load is in the washer. Eating lunch now.

Hi all, had to get online to print out a trash bill so hubby can go dump yard waste for free.... have to prove you are a resident.... guess drivers license is not proof ... he is cutting down a smallish tree in our side yard.. it's growing into our shed ... and really serves no purpose... he's doing fall cleanup so good time to take a load for him and one of the neighbors too... good thing we kept his old truck ..uses it more here.. The powers that be just relaxed our mask orders but we are still staying in... and wearing masks if we have to go out... I don't know why they do this and then wonder why people are dying in droves again... sure glad we don't have kids in school ... Well off to mop my kitchen and bathroom floors... takes longer to take out table and chairs than to do mopping... but can't wait till I can get tile in office and hallways.. and replace the horrible carpet in bedrooms... it's the cheapest they could have gotten and no padding and it is always dirty looking even when I use the carpet machine on it.... Ugh, Sherri, I have known carpets like that. Good luck! Good for you keeping masks even in a place where they are no longer required. What will places like Walmart do about their nationwide requirement, I wonder?

My phone line was out this morning which means my internet too. I made the necessary calls and things and was expecting someone to come tomorrow for repairs. I think it was a lineman working down the way because it's working fine now. It was about three hours total.

Yes about kids in school. I worry every day that one of my grands that live by me wil get sick. They are all 4 " in school". The 4 on the east coast are doing virtual schooling. Well 3 are. The baby is 2.
On the news tonight I heard a lady complaining that the county next to us has extended the mask order. I have no idea why she is upset..noone listens to it anyway. To most it is just life as usual. Our family uses masks when we have to go out but we try not to any more than necessary. Even Wal-Mart has curb side pick up.
Sorry for your phone's outage Tina. You would think that TPTB could let people know ahead of time. It would cause a lot less confusion. I am glad all is well now.

I've read where people in Florida have been bullied for wearing masks. I hope it doesn't spread around the country. It seems pretty awful.
Here it is a statewide mandate so the law is on the side of the masked. For now anyway.

I will say I do not think that my daughter's in-laws social distance. So I assume no masks.
This is all strange as Val's Sister-in-law is a nurse practitioner..with a Doctorate. You would think she would know better.

Covid laws are getting more strict here...and I am glad. We are down to two active cases in our province, that is a blessing in these times.
Today we are getting the winds and rain from Hurricane Teddy, we can use the rain so no complaints here about that.
Nana, I remember taking out those carpets in our bedrooms and replacing it with peel and sticks from the dollar store in hopes of someday getting decent flooring in there. I still have the peel and sticks but at least it's not those 'can never look clean' carpets....I hope you get to replace them soon.
I'll take some apple loaf.

While Teddy (no relation) was playing in the water, he hoovered up all the smoke he could reach from California's wildfires. Now he's bringing it to eastern Canada. I hope you can find something useful to do with it, Sunny. I am sorry.

It's supposed to be sunny here today but it's overcast and feels damp out there. I was going to prune a few shrubs but I may wait a day or two.
I went to my mothers yesterday and brought her here with the intention of her spending the night but she didn't want too. I didn't want to force her because I don't know what's she's actually thinking anymore, so I took her back after dinner. Andy loves her. She let him lick ice cream out of her bowl.

We went to a funeral today of a 23 year old girl. Her family says she was murdered and the police did keep her body for 3 weeks but she wasn't shot, stabbed, raped, beaten up, and her family says they don't know how she was murdered.

I really don't have much to talk about. I have not been out this year much at all.
Feb 2020, I went to the banks early in the month. Then later in the month I took my car in for a new battery and an oil change. Then across thee street for new tires and home.
Mar first, I went to my banks. Then home
I think it was either Jun or Jul 1, I went to the banks again. Then waited then a quick trip into my grocery store to see what they were like during the pandemic. I left and waited outside while my daughter did the shopping.
The only 'out' I have been otherwise has been to my mailbox or to the dumpster.I can no longer manage walking my hillside. We're in a hellish drought so I don't water things. And that makes stuff really dry and ripe for a fire.
I have nothing much to talk about. I rely on Sunny to tell me what she is working on most days.

I rely on Sunny to tell me what she is working on most days. Tina, I don't know if that should make me feel happy or sad.  I haven't been out except a few times as well Tina...I am sort of used to it now. Honestly, the last time I was out...I was so anxious that I just wanted to be home. I don't know how 'social' people are doing with all of this. I have to keep busy or my OCD would get the better of me. Junie, the days seem to jumble all in one....it's a good thing that I have to follow GG's school calendar to keep the weekdays partially sorted out. well, that and GB calling to tell me how many days until Saturday's sleepover. I got all the daffodils dug up and sorted. I don't know how 15 daffy bulbs can multiply into over 100 in a few years but I am liking it. I replanted groups of 3 or 5 everywhere.

Daffs are great as a critter deterrent too. I used to use them to ward of ground squirrels from more delicious plants. I use to get garlic at the grocery store and plant for the same reasons. Well, plus using. Onions also work well.

Well it seems chatty to me in here... came in to check bank accts and make sure money was going in and out as it was supposed to... it was so here I am ... got our county tax bill yesterday .. only 60 more than last yr so good for that... hubby is out mowing... this staying home is hard on him..he is much more social then me... but he does visit with people he's met walking Milo... and he does the shopping... I haven't been out but 3 times since end of Feb...
I am bad keeping track of days too... have to set alarms on my phone to makes sure I do some things regularly , time seems to go by quickly sometimes.. other times it really drags...
Well off to make a leftovers dinner... may have an icecream float for dessert... craving something sweet ...

Tina the squirrels around here don't seem to mind daffodils. Maybe I should try planting garlic. I can't stand squirrels. I'm sorry that you're in such a horrible drought.

WOW! There is a lot of talking, Tina. And yes you had things to say. To somewhat hold up my end.. Daffodils never stopped critters, back home...I never did get tulips to grow at the farm... moles were forever grateful for my planting the good...(GRR) My problem is my surprise lillie's that I brought from home. Last year they came up...this year one lone bulb produced a flower..and another made 1 green "stalk". I may dig them up and see if they are still there .it is bad enough I lost my wild violets from the farm and then in town..and my chives that I have had since the kids were small. .

 Happy Birthday Nana, may your day be filled with love, fun and cake....you have to have cake. I never had much luck with regular tulips here, they grow all stalks. The daffy's do wonderful as well as the different lilies.(they need to be divided as well) I am picking up GB and doing a big curbside pick up. The hardware store, grocery and pharmacy....the kids are excited to just get out and drive around for a bit. Paper towels are the new 'can't find' item here.

Good morning. I heard someone saying (actually, read) that the newest shortage they had run across is men's underwear. It struck me funny and gave me a good laugh. But it is painful too. I think we will all have difficulties finding some things, some times over the following years. This pandemic has messed with supply lines all over the world.
Wildfires along the west coast have damaged crops that weren't near the actual fires with heavy smoke. It blocked the sunlight for weeks and sunlight affects the sugar content of food. Everything has been affected by it. And we're not done with fires. (crossing my fingers).

Paper towels..wow !..I will put them on my list....just to add to what I have in the basement. I will not.stop stockpiling until this pandemic is over. Even if the DH thinks I am being wasteful (with money)..He is a " buy just what you need to get by" kind of guy.

I'm reading a book about what the Germans did to Leningrad in 1941-45 when they cut off all food, heat, and electricity supplies and when I went to the grocery store I couldn't help but think how fortunate I am. People had money but there was no food to be found. My store has everything but Lysol spray. What's happened to Lysol? Guess I better get some paper towels next time. Junie tell the Mr. it's not wasting if you eventually use it.

Our news station told us to prepare for food shortages, rising prices and no items to be found this Winter...they also said that our province would be hit the hardest with rising prices. That was discouraging since we are already paying too much for the normal items. So far I have 150 rolls of toilet paper and 30 rolls of paper towel tucked away. My next stock up item is soap, shampoo, toothpaste and deodorant....to me they are just as important as toilet paper

Good morning. You even have more TP and PT than I do, Sunny. My lack is due to availability right now. We have limits in our stores. And have since it became scarce early this year. I have lots and lots of soaps and shampoo and such though. The supply chains have been broken off and on from the pandemic and even from before that from the tariff things. That also shot our prices through the roof. And I don't think they've reached their top yet.
Summer is not over here. We're going to top 100* much of this coming week. With some winds. That puts us back in fire danger. Pray for California.

Our news is not on this the way Sunny's is, Carol. And they should be so we are prepared. I prep mostly for earthquakes. A big one could knock out electricity for a long time. It could disrupt roads and train tracks for a long time also. That means infrastructure is down for everything coming from our state and most things from China. 3/4 of winter vegetables across the US come from Ca.
As for China, a friend's laptop is showing it's age. He ordered a new Apple from the company several months ago. It is still back ordered because of the pandemic altering work in the factories there. He has savef his pictures and main files to thumb drives un the meantime in case of full failure.
We are still feeling the effects of Covid. And will through, at least, Nov 2021 they tell us. (Dr. Fauci who I trust)

Tina, we have limits as well here but DD told me a trick. We are allowed one pack of TP or PT per family per trip, so I did curbside in my name, DH's name, and GG's name...each with a different phone number. They allow me to pick up the three different orders so I got 3 pks of TP then 3 pks of PT. I did that one trip last month and one this month. I know it's not an honest way to do it but I can't be running to town every couple of days like some others do. It helps that our TP and PT supplier have a factory in the lower part of our province as well. Food wise we will be o.k. in this household.... no one is making fun of us for farming any more. Junie, get that stockpile going....and let Rod know that he will be wiping with the phone book if he doesn't allow it.

We still get phone books here Tina, I'll start saving them in case I need to send them to Rod. Today I am laying ceramic tile under the wood stove. The old ones have taken a beating in the past 20 years....it's only a 4' by 5' space with no cutting needed so it should go quick. Well, one can hope anyway.

I love ham hocks every once in awhile. I just figure they are pure cholesterol or fatty blood clogger and don't indulge much. It's been years since I've had them, maybe 4 or 5? But a craving is haunting mr.

I love them..but I too have never cooked them. Rod does not like beans, so I have never made the dish. My mom made them a lot...then as daddy did not like leftovers, mom turned the leftovers into what she called potato soup. I loved it...I really must ask her how she made that. Good morning. I have been awake almost an hour..lord knows why. Rod thinks we should go to Lowe' s today. If we get there at 9 the contractors should be gone and regular people should not be there yet. I hope he is right. I will do some TP & PT shopping..they have a section for that. Thanks for the birthday wishes... was a nice quiet day for us... though we did have a nice dinner with neighbors who isolate like we do and wear masks....
OH now I want ham hocks and beans too, hubby won't eat it though.... so it will remain a want.... LOL!
Just did end of month bills and paid county taxes... hubby is watching a football game ... he is so bored staying home... much more social person than me.... in laws want us to come out there but they socialize with everyone and no one wears a mask at all, az did away with required wearing.. expect more cases in a couple weeks... they just don't learn.... i worry for my sil ... she is diabetic, sure doesn't need covid too...

Pork hocks are the first thing that I cook when we process our pig in the Fall. I never eat the fat off them but I love the flavor it adds to the veggies. Junie, can you pick me up a sheet of plywood at Lowes?

Still in the mid 80s here but when it gets cold I'm going to start looking for ham hocks. That sounds like a great cold weather meal. Maybe by then I'll have found a shallot that will add to the flavor.
I took my mother to lunch today and then to get her hair washed and bangs trimmed. Poured rain and my shoes are probably ruined.

We got some nasty wind today, the power company was out in full force. The trees were so pretty...now most of the leaves are on the ground.

I wish the national forests on the north and south of me would do something about their litter. There are downed trees , branches and dries scrub all up and down them. But they are federal land and we're not allowed to water them, clear anything out or plant anything.
More than 50% of the public lands in California are federal. State public lands are much nicer to visit. They have pathways cleared of tripping hazards. They are pleasant places to go. Even the wildlife seems nicer.
When the fires in Northern Ca were in the news, they had reports of one forest that was burning down that saddened a lot of people. It was an area with many ancient sequoias. The fires came in from federal lands onto state lands and took out a few buildings and some outer trees but left most of that park unscathed. The sequoias remain.
I am snacking on pork hocks tonight. Mmmm, good.

Thank goodness the sequoias are safe. I would like to think that TPTB would make a fire break around the ground where the magnificent trees are growing. ..It is not like wild fires are an odd occurrence. They did get some rain up north but followed by more heat and some winds. Add a new fire and a couple old ones they never fully contained. Still a mess and our fire season officially starts tomorrow.

Half our province still have no power, it seems the term for what happened is now called a 'Bombogenesis'....either way, some people will only have power back on in 48 hrs. It has been a strange year.

Was it a derecho kind of event, Sunny? They can shake you up like tornadoes can only over a much wider area.
It was hot all night. I kept waking up trying to find a dry place on my pillow. My hair is all stuck together and nasty. Time for a wash.

Tina, SO very sorry for the excessive heat. Is that a normal type of occurrence ? There are good points to fall and winter. Not sweating is one of them.

A bombogenesis:
is a phenomenon or process in which there is rapid and sustained falling of barometric pressure in the center of a low-pressure system, indicative of its strengthening into a powerful storm.

A derecho:
is a widespread, long-lived, straight-line wind storm that is associated with a fast-moving group of severe thunderstorms known as a mesoscale convective system and potentially rivaling hurricanic and tornadic forces. Yes, it's usual to have hot throughout September. October, however, is pushing my limits. Climate change is not fun.

It was strange Tina, like a hurricane without the rain....they did get a tornado under us with the system though.
Well, we got all the farm equipment serviced and put away. Fall is really here.

It sounds like Mother Nature drops a bomb in the middle of a storm and makes everything worse. Much worse.

I read what those two things are..twice and yet I do not understand them...but I will get there. Tina, thanks for the explanations.
I thought climate change was going to get us, and reduce the population. But now I guess Covid is going to do that job.
Sunny, glad that the d's arm.equipment preparation is done. That must be a relief.
Rod turned on the heat. I think his idea is to take the chill out of the house and then turn the heat back off. At home we had a month or so between AC weather and having the furnace on...not so here...

Climate change is changing our world. In some ways we never thought about. They are finding things never before seen on this world being released by the melting ice. We don't know that Covid isn't one of those things. I just read a headline somewhere that covid virus is living in fresh water sources. I did not read the article. Now I wish I had. But I often pick and choose what I want to saddle my mind with for mental health reasons.

Although the camellias are blooming, which is a sure sign of fall, spring has sprung at my house. Hydrangeas and white azaleas are blooming again, 4 squash plants have sprouted and are about 10 inches tall and are spreading, the lone cucumber plant that didn’t get pulled is green with yellow flowers, whatever the purple spring flowers are that bloom in our field are blooming again too. Interesting. Lovely early spring weather.
