I should be baking, my blueberry shrubs are loaded. I am going to have to pick and freeze them....but it is supposed to be 108*F today with the humidity. I plan to hide...even my hands are swollen this past week with all this heat.

I hope it cools down soon, I have pickles and preserves to start.

This evening right before the sun goes down it will be cooler so you can pick the berries. That or get up when it is just barely light and go out and pick. That is what I used to do.

Then run the A/C unit with a fan in the kitchen...back at the farm I would hang a sheet over the walk way w/o a door to keep the a/c air localized....I wonder if you could make jelly from frozen berries ? Remember to freeze them loose on lipped sheet pans then transfer to gallon zip top bags to store in the freezer so you can i just use what you want at a time when it gets cooler.

A great jam can be made from frozen berries.
I've been up for a bit and Teddy wants my computer. So I'm off to snooze.

Good morning. Had a little shaking going on this morning. One way to wake up. Actually, had I been asleep or even standing up, I wouldn't have felt it. It was one canyon over from me.

I can smell a faint smell of smoke in the air, I am guessing the lightning sparked fires somewhere....still no report out yet though.

I made a cold potato salad and deviled eggs for supper....now if I could only wave a magic wand for some kind of meat to be cooked. lol

It is hot season here also. To be followed by windy season then cold season. Then spring. But our windy season now begins sooner and extends into spring now. That's our fire season. Fire and wind mix all too well.

Yes, Santa Ana winds. They used to come mostly in the fall. But these days they can come at any time of year.
I will say good night as well. Sweet dreams all.

Thanks for correcting my spelling..and here I thought the first word was going to be wrong....My DH' s aunt and uncle used to live in Huntington Beach. They were talking about those winds all the time.

They moved to CA from IL...early in their working careers..then when they both retired, they moved back to IL...so they got to live on Illinois prices.using California ' s retirement. They were happy. Then when Rod' s uncle passed, his wife and DD moved back west. They now live in Arizona along with their other 2 DD's/ siblings.

Headed to bed now, honest......Sweet.Dreams.

Tina, has your Summer been more extreme than usual as well? I was just curious if it is hotter everywhere this year. It makes me wonder if Winter will be warmer or the opposite for us.

Another hot day ahead, the clothes on the line seem to love it lol

I don't know if summer is more summery than usual. I really have to wait to see the data. I think it's less brutal but not sure. And that can change given our hottest month is usually in September.
Our Santa Anas are legendary. Although they have expanded their time frame, they've actually mellowed a bit. We have fewer days of 100+ mph winds now. Just more 75-80 mph days. And more arsonists, too.

It will be interesting to see what the verdict is on mire severe weather in your areas, ladies. I cannot vote as I have no idea if it i more hot here than usual or not.

I guess I have to go grocery shopping today. I tried to order online, really I did...Wal-Mart wanted to mail me the dry goods and make me go instore for the cold.

No Wal-Mart for me..sad as that is.

Tina, do you think the winds are longer lasting because of development of areas; deforesting, removing topsoil and such?

Sunny, for us, it's been a cooler summer. Not really cool, but it's August and the plants aren't withered and are still producing. I can't remember a year when the garden looked this good this late in the summer. It's only 80° today. We could use a cold winter. Not like yours please smile Just several freezing days dispersed throughout the winter months to kill off a few bugs.

Junie, that's strange. Shelley has been ordering her food from Walmart since it started and they've never asked her to do that. Wonder if it has to do with Amazon.

Stay safe today Junie.

Enjoy the lovely weather Bestofour, and all the good food.

Tina, those winds must be awful for people with respiratory issues.

I fought the heat and did a bit of gardening out there....the earwigs have invaded everything. Next year I will have to get a bag of diatomacious(sp?) earth to sprinkle around.

Sheri: I think it is me..I gave them a bad review for how I was only allowed to chose from certain items when shopping. That or in the last month a lot of people were buying online then complaining there so they changed the rules. I know hiw you have to fi d items is different.

Diatomaceous Earth is good stuff, Sunny. And my computer says it's spelled wrong no matter that I just copy/pasted it directly from a scientific source.
Sheri, our Santa Anas are much bigger than our fire-caused deforestation. And they predate our written history. It's a hurricane sized event covering several counties. It seems like a huge battle between highs and lows

I wanted.to tell Sheri that I made Zucchini Bread this afternoon with cucumber. I liked it, Rod.did.not. If I do it again, I will not.shred the center with seeds,.and.I will drain the shredded cucumber before adding it to the batter. I had to.add flour as the batter was too wet.

I've never made cucumber sandwiches but I like them. People make them for baby and bridal showers around here. With cream cheese I think. Yummy.

Wow Tina. It sounds terrifying. Do the fires ever stop long enough for things to regrow?

The forests around here keep starting to regrow but tend to burn within 20 or 30 years or so. And we have had some heavy droughts going on too.The forestry keeps replanting native trees and destroying non native types but...
Yep, cukes, thin sliced, with cream cheese is good. I also love them wtth mayo. or truffle aioli.I need to add them to my grocery list.

I wish you were all closer...I have lots of cukes to share. It has been to hot to process them for pickles so I have been eating and giving them away. It is supposed to cool down this week though so the next batch will get preserved. I have never ate a cucumber sandwich.

DH is home today and his 'to do' list will outweigh mine...oh well, things need to get done no matter whose list they are on. thumbup

A cucumber sandwich. I have heard of them, but have never eaten one.

Just back from a local orchard. That was a mistake. NO ONE was wearing a mask. Well of course we both were wearing a mask. Oh! One customer did have one in her hand.. rolz

Had we had of known we would not have gone. But we were there so we picked up a
peck of freestone peaches and went home. Good news is it was in a very open shed.

Morning all,

I don't understand the not wearing a mask thing... do they have a death wish? I have been out a total of 3 times in 4 months.... would like to see my grands grow up and my greats too... we had travel plans for this summer and would have loved doing that but it can wait for next yr or the next.... haven't seen my kids and grands for a yr and it's hard but not worth dying for...

Hubby got a spinner for our yard when we moved here and the wonderful AZ sun faded it almost white.. was a pretty blue green... he repainted it today to match the angel statue he got at about the same time... looks nice... angel is supposed to hole a flower pot but its to small for a real plant... and it would get to hot too I think... so one of these days I will get a fake ivy or something to put in it...

Well got some bills to set up to pay and who knows may make a mac salad for dinner... hubby's favorite... bill good and cold by dinner time..... have a good day all and stay well....

Nana

Good to see you, Nana. I have been wondering about you.

We wonder about people as well. I guess they do not know anyone who has ever had it so they do not worry. That or they do not believe it is real. Sad part is we are talking about dying here not just being.sick.for a.few days. I agree about not seeing family. I have not seen any of my family except mom and my cousin who is her caregiver since march.

Only other family I have seen is my DD who lives here and her kids. Will watch the kids next week as she has to go to school for meetings. The kids begin school monday after next and once they begin, I will not see them or their parents until Christmas and perhaps not then. There is not 14 days for them to self quarantine before the holidays. If in-person school is closed, I may get to see them then.

My computer is really dragging this morning...I wish I could fill it with coffee. lol

Masks should be essential and mandatory. I wear mine just to get out of my truck for curbside pick up....and I am not even in distance of anyone.

GG attends a very small school(under 90 kids this year) but the risk will be there. They have informed parents that children in grades K-5 do not need to wear a mask at all. touched GB will attend a different and much larger school. I have no idea what they will do or when I will get to see him once school begins in September.

Yep...in this area kids 9 and under do not need to wear masks. Then.I have heard it might be that if the kids are 6 ft apart in classrooms they will not have to wear masks until they go out into the halls or common areas. From what I see, I feel sorry for our teachers. It will be quite the job.

Sometimes I wish I were independently wealthy, I would tell my DD to quit her job fir niw and keep her.kids home and home school them...ah well, to dream.

As of Monday, we will go from the 6 ft to 3 ft....people will think, why even bother at all? Completely senseless.

Tina, I've never had a truffle. I just happen to have cream cheese in the frig. Do you have a recipe for cucumber sandwiches? If Sunny and I could figure it out, you'd have plenty of cucumbers to eat.

Sherri, I love macaroni salad but Johnny won't eat it so I never make.

Rain and more rain.

I don't care for cold pasta anymore. I used ro love a good pasta salad. truffle aioli comes in a jar and I've only had one that was a gift, Sheri. There is a tiny bit of truffle in it.
I don't have a real recipe for a cuke sandwich. I do have tips. The cukes should be peeled for the best texture.Very thinly sliced then drained. I do a single sandwich for myself so I just pat the slices on a paper towel. Don't salt the slices or that will draw out lot's of water. If you are working with larger, older cukes you should also cut them in half lengthwise and scrape out the seeds. They get rather bitter.
You can add single thicker slices of cucumber in any sandwich like slices of tomato.

I love cold pasta salad, I try make it at least twice a month. I add different things for different flavors...I really like a bit of dill pickle in it(strange since I don't like dill pickles) lol

I am not sure what today holds, GB is here....I will take him home later in the day. GG wants to go try her metal detector at the beach on the same trip since DD lives close to a public beach area.

I dislike extremes.
Cuke Salads
Cut up a couple of cukes add pineapple tidbits, a couple tablespoons of cider vinegar, s&p, chill and serve.
Use watermelon instead of pineapple
My Fave
Using a bottled dressing of choice Sliced cukes, super-thin sliced quarter onions, s&p, chill and serve. Great with ceasars, ranch, 1000 tsland, etc.

Thanks for the cuke recipes Tina. I have a frig full so I’ll try them all but with watermelon instead of pineapple. Not a fan of pineapple.

Yes, get those cuddles in while you can. kissie

Today I have to go to a walk in clinic to get a prescription refilled since I no longer have a doctor. My mother is taking GG for the day since she cannot come in because of Covid. I heard it is quite the process to see someone....my aunt waited over 6 hrs last week. It is a cooler day so I am going with a bundle of paper work to do.(You register inside and wait in your car until you are called).

I took the kids to the beach yesterday...when you look across the water, it looks like there is no end in sight with the ocean. It is strange but something to wonder at if one has never seen it.

I grew up in CA and we went to the beach a lot. I blame those fun days for the spots on my face now that I'm old. smile Where we live now is about 3 hours from Myrtle Beach, SC, and I was amazed to find that some of the children at the schools I was the nurse for had never been. Some of the teachers took a group for the day one time just so they could see the ocean. It is an amazing sight.

Today was day 14 for Colt's school and so far so good.

Tina, I'm all in for sharing my snow...you all can take at least 75% of it haha

I heard on the news that there is a coin shortage in the U.S. It is going to get expensive for the tooth fairy. grin Meanwhile, here in Canada there is a shortage of $50 bills. Everyone is hoarding due due to the pandemic I guess.

Hi all,

I am still here, had a bad few days.. slept wrong and got a crick in my neck that just would not go away... was so very stiff... made me hurt everywhere after a while... wasn't moving so it wouldn't hurt...finally started loosening up yesterday... not a fun way to spend time for sure...

I got laundry going now... need to vacuum and dust the house, chores don't stop for anyone I guess, it is over a hundred today... supposed to be hot all week... ac on for sure... sure glad we have it...

Well off to dust and watch my soap.... have a good day all.

Nana

Well, today is cooler than yesterday by about 5 degrees because cloud cover moved in. But it feels worse because humidity came with the clouds. If the clouds bring lightning, we could be in trouble.

Yes when you posted the grands were all tucked away and sleeping. Henry get woke up early every morning by his mom taking a shower as his room us next to the bathroom, so he wakes up his sisters when he is here, if that makes sense. So I heard them talking, so I was awake...

Tomorrow is Henry's first day of school. So. I think he will get what he wants for lunch.

Nana glad that you are feeling better....Weather here was overcast and cooler with a slight breeze yesterday. Looks like it may be the same today. I can only hope.

Yes they went home around 4. Yes the house is much quieter. But " Grandma is very tired. Thank goodness the girls are waiting to come over after Henry is dropped off at school. So I can sleep a bit more in the morning.

How was Henry's first day back to school?

Today I need to mow the lawn, I won't say grass because it is definitely more weeds than anything.(we are getting our second crop of dandelions) lol

Well I will find out thus afternoon how his first day of school was. But Valarie told us this morning that he was real excited last evening. Then right before bed he said he did not want to go school because he did not want to get the corona virus. Poor baby. His mom had to tell him IF he got sick it would just be like a cold. If she had not have he would not have wanted to go. These are scarey bad times for little ones. I am hoping the school addresses the children's fears today first thing.

Tina what does your almanac say about my winter? Last year everyone said we were supposed to have a cold winter but we didn't. We need some cold.

I honestly don't know, Sheri. Neither do I believe all of their predictions.
I hope we get a very wet winter and spring but on the warmer side rather than cooler.
Sweet dreams all.

Tina, they can't predict the weather 24 hrs in advance...but it is still fun to read the farmer's almanac. They used to have lots of interesting facts and such.

Today I will tackle laundry and some baking.

Yes, I know they can't predict, especially in our quickly changing times. But it is fun to read accompanying things like the gophers have dug in two extra feet so watch for heavy snow. I don't purchase these things but an occasional article comes through on the net.
Good morning. No plans for the day. Too hot to plan. It makes me sweat just thinking about it.

It has cooled down here, in fact it is calling for frost tonight. touched

I just picked up my grocery order...they finally got my order of bananas right(half ripe and half green), the last time they were all overripe and I had to use them for muffins.

I could do that in Illinois...buy slightly green ones so they would ripen slowly at home...here no matter how they look when I buy them..they are over ripe in no time.

Mainly they always put the bananas in with cold items....It is a small thing, but grrrrrr.

Val Came today spent a few hours and brought Henry with her. I told the girls we could talk on the computer or the phone.....so she was trying to tell her mom about it when.they were in the car and she got so confused and said, oh I do not know...when I hugged Valarie goodbye I had to force myself not to cry...

I will.say goodnight now. sleep well.

Good morning !

One of the school that opened the middle of last week, is already closed....for a week anyway...it seems one of the kids tested positive for covid....IMO the child was probably already infected when school started.

They are not tested before school starts, Carol?
I am so glad most of our schools are not starting yet. There are some private schools trying now. But all of our public schools are not all the way up to universities.

No apparently they were not. I think we have a bunch of ___________ idiots in these 2 states....I get that home.schooling is hard..academically and mentally...but
to chance.your kids like this is unreal. Even my Triplet Grands..We were blessed that they are all alive, normal and reasonably intelligent. But to expose them to a school full of other children, at this time?? Foolish to my notion. My niece was going to keep her kids home but all parents were told it was their decision but if your child did not begin school when it opened they could not come back at all until the 21-22 school year began....All about money to my notion...

Junie I think it's the same here. Whatever is decided at the beginning of school will have to be continued until next school year. I think it's so people won't be sending them for a while, taking them out, sending them back and so on. It's hard enough to keep up with the craziness during a regular school year. You'd be surprised how much people move around and take their children from one school to another and then back again. Or how often parents send their children to live with a relative or boyfriend, or the bio dad, only to have them sent back to the mom, all with a change of schools. We had one set of parents who said every February when they went to Norway to visit relatives, that they had decided to homeschool. There kids were back in a month when vacation was over.

I think you're right too about the child being positive before coming to school. For whatever reason the parents weren't aware and the teacher probably sent the child to the school nurse and found there was a low grade temp. I can't even remember how many times children started school covered with chicken pox, impetigo, or ringworm, only to be sent to me and when I called a parent they acted totally surprised. I was in the office when a dad brought his little girl in the office and her face, neck, arms, every exposed area was covered with blisters some of which were draining. He said she'd been like that a while and it was getting better. She had impetigo and thankfully they got up late or she would have been on the bus for her first day of first grade.

As far as testing, I don't think people can be forced to comply. I hate to say it, but I think some people know but don't want to be found out. Does that sound mean?

Sheri, I think you are 100% right. Valarie has also said that last year...parents would give their kids medication so that they had no temp in the morning so when school started they would be fever free....then they would not begin to feel bad until around 2 or 3 in the afternoon...and sharing whatever they had in the mean time.... This year will be no different.

And. yes Tina, about much more than the kids health.

I sent Teddy off to school one morning. They called me because he was running a fever. I swore he wasn't when I put him on the bus. They believed me. That was a nasty flu that struck fast and hard all through his school.

Well sure Tina, that happens..I am sure it has happened to us all. Me included. And I personally knew of kids who acted well because they did not want to stay home...and so ended up at school sick...there are plenty of honest variations that can, did, and will happen.

But there are parents who look at school as a free babysitter, so they can go to their jobs..and while.I appreciate that one does.not always have the luxury of staying home when they need.to, I would like to think that there would be an alternate plan B in place. and that should not be sending a sick child to school

Climbing down from my soap box to say goodnight. Sleep Well.
