Tina, have you been out anywhere at all since this pandemic started? I have been but for curbside pick ups, once to a local grocery store and once to a bank to set up phone banking. It was a scary outing, people just refuse to social distance it seems. I'll be so glad when our local pharmacy opens...it is where I buy most of my gifts for people. They don't have online shopping set up so it's a pain to try and order beyond the necessities.

I am glad you got your mulch Junie...how is everything coming along with the landscaping?

I am hoping to get the grass or I should say weeds cut today. It has gone out of control with all this heat...my yard is a mess.

I need to get a battery for my watch. The jewelry store where I have to go to get it is small but I am hoping there is not a run on jewelry at this time.

I could really use another bag of mulch, but I will rake grass for the rest of the line.

I wil! Add to the mulch next year. Then from then on I can add as I need to. I do wish roundup was not a contact herbicide. Sad thing is I lost 2 of my 3 new blackberry plants that I had added. Rod's weed eater got one, but the 2nd one just died.
Good news is after this next rain, I should have lots of berries to pick.

I think I wil! See if there is some grass to rake tonight.

Yay for berries, sorry about the loss of the two plants though. Honestly Junie, one could always use another bag of mulch...no matter how many bags you buy lol

I got the sit down mowing and the hand mowing done...I am trying to convince myself to start the weed eater in a few. I really need a big one with a blade for the main ditch, it is too long and steep to mow and too grown in for a string trimmer. The deer flies are awful but the mosquitoes are hiding.

My rugosa rose bush is so overgrown, I cut it back but now I can't get in between it with my hands to trim the grass. I wonder if vinegar sprayed around it would kill the shrub or just the grass????

I don't think I would try vinegar. Can you trim back the Bush some so the grass could be killed. And is it really weeds , because if so, you could try to buy a small amount of weed and feed then next year put landscaping paper over the grassy area there ( or a closed black garbage bag) with mulch over top.

I've never tried vinegar for killing grass. Did you try it?

I'm going out tomorrow to pick blackberries maybe. I noticed yesterday that they're just about ready. The deer usually have them by now so I guess the deer repellant is working.

I keep saying I'd love to have chickens but don't want the work that goes with them. As long as I can buy farm grown eggs I'm gonna try and hold off.

Do you guys like rutabagas enough to grow them?

Rutabagas... they are sorta like a turnip, right ? And no, I do not like them well enough to grow them...But if you served them to me, I would eat them.

Sweet Dreams everyone

Sheri, I plant turnips but they need to be planted from seedlings here...sadly there were none this year. I could not find any beet seeds either...so I will have to buy a bag of beets to make a few bottles of pickled ones for Winter.

I have been getting calls all week to sell beef and pork this Fall. I am not allowed, I can sell to a butcher who can 'test' the meat but not to the public.....it is hard to make people understand how things have changed over the past years.

Yay! I'm glad they plan on doing something with your bear. They do move them from peopled areas here. But it's kind of sad. Like deer crossing signs. It's not the deer , it's the road crossing the forest..
My groceries are magically appearing today!

I checked...only two today.

My tame strawberries are going to be small this year, well water isn't the same as rain water...the wild ones burned up from the heat in the fields.

OMG smile I should have checked in here earlier because it's 7:49 PM and just finished storming and NO I didn't remember to check the blackberries. I forgot to go to the library too. And yes, I do have these things on my list BUT I don't know where I put my list. I need to back up and reorganize.

I'm sorry, Sheri. I tried.
Here they actually grow strawberries in vast fields under shade cloth for the heat. And a few other vegetables as well.

Yay for you. How does the trap work. ? It sure looks big. Do you need to put your trash out by it to draw the bear ??

No, they have bread and molasses inside of it....it works like a small animal trap. They walk in to the end to get the food, they step on a plate and it slams the door shut behind them. It is a pretty cool set up...I just hope it works.

The shade cloth is usually on wires and can be pulled back (like a horizontal curtain) on non sunny days. Yes, rain goes right through although we get very little rain when our sun shines. Our berries are usually laid out with drip lines and weedcloth. And there's also different ways to discourage birds and other foraging critters.
