You wouldn't like my lawn...at the moment it is more dandelions than grass. haha ....I should look into making some dandelion jelly, I heard it was delicious. You steep the yellow petals and make the jelly from the tea.

If you go and pick the younger green parts of dandelions,( the whole plant..a bit of the root included..adds some crunch) they make a wonderful salad. A vinegar and oil dressing with a chopped up egg in it. Dad would take the salad bowl out to get them in to make sure he got enough. Wash them well, And.put in a cotton dish towel and shake around outside to get out the water. Now I am hungry for that as a salad.

Young dandy greens are good but it's to late in the season here to get young ones. The greens have definitely gone bitter beyond any taste.

Yes, you are right, Tina...I was just out getting some and yes they are far too tough already...I may add a few to our salad just for contrast anyway. I have just realized that Dad would go out and get what he called chicory from the yard....I always thought he was just calling dandelions chicory..but apparently not. They are actually 2 different plants of the same family..both edible..

They have moved outside but in a dog kennel we borrowed from a farmer's wife....they have an upside down Rubbermaid container as a 'house' at the moment in the kennel. I am not expanding the coop until I know if they are hens or roosters, they say you find out in their 6th week which is next week.

My lawn needs to be mowed....the weeds are taller than the flowers in the flower beds lol

My weeds are that big Junie, I have dandelions over a foot tall but I do not want to mow them until the other flowers have started to bloom....the bees need the food.

It will be a clean and mop day here....followed by outdoor work later in the day.

Our cow had a baby through the night, we are now the proud owners of a bouncing baby bull. lol

I am sure the bees will thank you, Sunny.I

Yay for a new baby bull. You will either have beef or you can sell him later.

Drinking coffee here. Trying it w/o sugar..I prefer the sugar.

We use a lot of sugar also. Jonni in particular. But it has not been hard to get beyond the first couple of weeks of food supply disruptions, unlike toilet paper that disappears as fast as they get it in. I am interested in the supply. mostly.

We haven't had much disruption in our toilet paper supply since the factory is in our province but the prices have doubled in price at the least....with no reason for it.

Ok the sugar thing..I have a lot if it.. I made sure I had plenty thanks to Tina.
BUT...I am on a statin..and I have researched this extensively..it seems every statin with the exception of prevastatin will drive up your blood sugar (A1C)..I felt fine..until I was put on metformin...then I was still ok until I had the dosage upped...now once in awhile..and there is no rhyme or reason to it, in the mornings I do not feel "right"..and also not all mornings..there is no rhyme or pattern to that either..so I thought I would see if not using sweetener in my coffee might help (?)..I have read that a body cannot tell the difference between real sugar and sweetner.....????

I like dandelions. I've never eaten any but I think they're pretty in yards. How can such a pretty flower be called a weed?

So Junie you're laying off the sugar for medical reasons. The only thing I use sugar for is hummingbird food.

We had a gorgeous day here. 75°. I can live with that.

I use sugar for that as well..my DH loves sweets...they even call his name...even when he is sound asleep.
Well I guess that I will use the simple version, Sheri. Yes, it is to see if I can figure out what my body is not liking. BUT then it could be my reaction to other things. I am also on a lot of Vitamin D...could be that too..my calcium levels are up...way up..as well..

I am thinking I will mow the lawn today then plant my potatoes this evening after supper, they are callousing over.

GG is anxiously waiting to put in her garden but we are still getting frost. I'll make the trenches for the potatoes and she'll put them in....I hope it keeps her from tormenting everyday to put in the seedlings. lol

Sunny, I was never able to find any certified seed potatoes and the ones from the store must be treated because they never sprouted. Guess I waiting to long to decide to plant them. You're having frost and I've got squash on the vine. Even the okra is up.

Junie has your doctor mentioned parathyroid disease?

About asking the Dr. About it now.

Sorry for the lack of seed potatoes, Sheri.

Sheri, seed potatoes are scarce here as well. I always get mine early but even then I had to search...I was lucky to find some red, they are impossible to get this year.

I guess we are all feeling the effects of getting older....I have another cyst starting on my ovary. It kept me up with a dull, aching pain all night. I'll order some 'woman's meds~Midol' for pick up later today.

DH is home today...we'll be putting in my new door hopefully. That is after we repair the sub floor that has been damaged from the leaking under the threshold....there's always something to repair. Our house is 25 years old and is starting to show its age.

Good morning !
Wow..I guess I am lucky that my SIL gave me some seed potatoes. He had some potatoes left from when he planted. He had kept some potatoes from his crop of last year also. And as I said, I planted few of my potatoes that were going to seed. I planted 4 of them...planting in pots remember.

I love harvesting potatoes for some weird reason. Putting my hands in the dirt and coming up with a tater just feels right.

Colt is here. We planted a few more cucumbers this afternoon. It was toooo hot.

We planted 125 seed potatoes...yummy.

A bear knocked over all of our garbage cans...he was visiting house to house through the night.

Yes, and they were all at the road for pick up at 6 am this morning. Luckily I woke up at 5:30 in time to clean the mess....others weren't so lucky. The drivers just drive on by...not that I blame them.

I have only seen 1 bear in my area since I've lived here and it didn't come close to our house. Glad they don't like us.

It is 100° here today. Colt and I walked down the driveway to the mail box and couldn't wait to get back inside. There will be no playing outside today.

I don't understand this time thing. We called Buffalo Wild Wings today because Colt loves their mac and cheese. They are open from 11 AM to 4 PM for pick up only BUT from 4 - 11 PM they're open for inside dining. And some places are open all day but close at 5 PM. To me, this is just nuts.

I think Businesses are struggling between their safety and opening up for income, Sheri. I think it will work out after a while.
We had a bear here a couple years ago.
I'm glad you got the satisfaction of cleaning up before pickup, Sunny. I'm sorry that your neighbors didn't. It isn't windy there, is it?

No, we had no wind Tina.

Times for businesses are really screwed up here as well. Pick up at the hardware store is from 8am-11am then it closes for two hours and reopens at 1pm to 3pm to go inside

We had our first death in our province from Covid this morning.

I'm sorry, Sunny. That's sad. I hope for no more for you.
Our county has been steady at 157 deaths for the last three weeks. But our cases have gone up since masks are no longer mandatory in our county or the county next door. I expect the death count to climb (if it's counted correctly).

Good Afternoon all,

No bears here but we do have coyotes,, hubby sees them in the distance when he walks Milo.. some people go out in desert to walk their pets but he sticks to the streets, course if he crossed it would be desert in some places... Hubby takes him at 6 am and about 8 at night now that it's hitting 100* here.
Our county has had 2700 cases so far and 208 deaths but they are opening up... they are making plans for schools too this fall.. tell you what if I had school age kids they would be homeschooled … glad my Grands in Colo are for sure.. especially the youngest boy Nicoli.. he is immunocompromised so no way does he go out. They were desperate for a new game for one of their systems over the weekend so Dad masked and gloved up and went to store and they texted back and forth to choose what they wanted... He stripped and showered before he got near anyone else... they live in Littleton and it's bad there still... My bil that lives close wants to have his annual 4 of July party.. he called and wanted us to come... Hubby said no way... sorry see you after we can have an inoculation and danger is over,, my Sil is diabetic ..74 yrs old and he has no business exposing her to this crap... he thinks it's all crap... guess till he actually sees someone close get it he wont' believe it...I just pray no one does... none of us are young anymore..

I spent most of the last couple days cleaning up my office and taking all my old tablecloths and making them smaller for table we use now.. left some big for when I drag out portable table but made 4 smaller to use everyday for us.. now I finally measured the window in office to make the blackout curtain for it .had it since we moved in..have plenty of time now.. then we make the pretty one shorter too.. for some reason it's about a foot and half to long, must have been the only one I could find close enough to the right size,, small town wally world - gotta take what you can get here. LOL!

Well off to go make dog bags for hubby to take on their walks.. to clean up after Milo... I try to keep them done up ahead so he has plenty... nothing but time now to get stuff done, not that I can't get lost in a book fairly easy..... LOL!

Stay well all...…
Nana

My county has 2.18 million people. Is next door to Los Angeles County with 10.04 million people. LA has 43,952 cases and 2,942 deaths. I think we're doing pretty well given our challenges.
But any county that spikes now is just a second spike in the first wave of this pandemic. We're all still in it. The wave will not be over until it comes near a standstill. Then in fall, alter kids go back to school we will see a second wave. How we react to that as country will tell how bad it gets.

You are rght, Tina. I wanted to buy the kids face masks..found some to use with filters. DD says not to bother that she thinks no kids will have to wear masks when school starts. shock My 3 born-premature granddaughters are going to pre-school this year..I told my DD that I would happily keep them home instead..
But they are going.,I am so afraid for them...I so wish a treatment or a vaccination would be found.

They take breathing treatments when they even get a simple cold....

The sun is shining, the mosquitoes are swarming....it must be spring here lol

GG's allergies are bothering her....the pollen in the air is heavy. Her eyes were swollen and bloodshot so it is time to start the Reactine meds for a few days. You can see the yellow dandelion pollen on the windows.

Attempting to finish up the door repair today. DH is quite the helper, he even put in the door knob wrong haha

Good morning !
spring is a good thing..mosquitoes and allergies are not. Our allergies are much worse here than they were in I!linois.. Rod takes something OTC..I used to take Sudafed when I had issues at home...but since my HA..I get to take nothing, because I steer clear of antihistamines.

Rod had to wash his truck the pollen was so thick on it.

Sorry about the door problems. Hopefully you will be done soon and have it in correctly.

I'm not sure of that. My older son had dreadful asthma when we lived back east. I had him tested as almost two years old. He was not allergic to food stuffs. Just everything wirh fir or feathers and anything green growing. He had a couple of allergy shots before we moved. And after we got back to California it was all magically gone. Just mild seasonal stuff. And Dimetapp worked for that. And the nasty ear infections that came with them.

Ah I hear you on that. My youngest had Dimatapp as a prescription when she was very young. Her Dr. Finally gave her an open ended RX.
she needed it so much. But then it became OTC soon after that. Thing is even though the Dr. assured me the 2 were the same strength, to me, the prescription worked better but we had to use the OTC. Same thing happened with Zantec.

Grass is already growing back under my blackberries. DH wants me to wait to get my mulch until we have to go to Lowes for other things. Looks like I will be " trimming " grass again.

Can you use weed cloth under your berries, Carol? I put weed cloth in places where I don't want weeds to grow and then mulch over that. If I want to add plants, I just move the mulch over nd cut an X in the weed cloth and plant then smooth back the mulch.
Sweet dreams all.

Yes, I have used newspaper back in IL. I was thinking about it when I was having trouble finding it online...we get very little newspaper here. At home I could count on sale bill paper, and a Local news paper...here nothing like either.

Good morning!

I've been up a few hours. Contemplating taking a nap. But will have to feed some lunch soon so 'll wait.

Keep cardboard wet. It won't do much good it water doesn't get to plant roots. For that I use a watering system under the cardboard with drips for each wanted plant.

Junie not sure what size area you're talking about but I've read that boiling water will kill grass and weeds. I've never tried it but have read it a lot of places.

Sheri..my blackberries cover between 16 and 20 feet of my fence...I was going out to measure but it is in the 90's out, and lazy me does not want to go out. The above is my best guess of the area. I think I will just buy some landscaping paper next week when we go to get the other items we need but I appreciate the information.

Showers for today...the weeds are loving this wet weather.

Do any of you have any opinions on eaves trough's? We are going to have to put some up this year...to stop the splashing from entering the bottom of our siding and causing water damage. cry

We call them rain gutters, here. I looked it up on google to make sure.
I have them down two sides of my house, and if, properly installed, they are extremely helpful. In a single story house, they are easy to maintain. I don't know anything about them in snowy areas. Other than the places I lived in had them.
I use paving stones below the downspouts to mitigate the problems of standing water.
If poorly installed they can make your leaking problem worse. And if they get clogged with leaves and things also.

SO HELP ME I HATE THIS TABLET!!!!!!! I HAD A HUGE POST TYPED OUT AND WAS JUST ADDING THE LAST BIT ABOUT GUTTERS, LEAD GUARDS, AND DOWN SPOUTS..AND ALEXA CAME ON, WHY, I DO NOT KNOW AND MY WHOLE POST DISAPPEARED.

I am not adding it back...Sunny do a lot of reasearch. All houses here have rain gutters with downspouts, and many have leaf guards. Saves having to clean the gutters out 1 to 2 times a year. Sadly we do not have them.

We have gutters with downspouts and leaf guard. Last month had a section replaced that was hit by a tree.

Junie, I've never tried that method either. I use landscape fabric. It's cheap and works great BUT if it gets a hole in it or comes apart at any point the weeds love it so I still have to pull a little grass once in a while.

Thanks, I have no trees close to my house so I have no worry about leaves. I am thinking that with the snow we will need the metal ones. I called a few companies but each place just said to leave a message and they'd call back....I can just imagine the scary price.

I don't know what the prices may be but mostly for the labor. Mine were all put up by John and have needed to be redone as the roof needed repair. But the old ones were reused even then. And they were used to start with. I think from people who were updating to poly ones. I don't like the poly. If you look at you tube, rain gutters a million videos pop up on what you need and how-to's.

Thanks Tina. The reason we want to hire a company is that they make them on site with a bending machine so it is made all in one piece with no connections. The connections are what breaks here in Winter.

Showers here for the morning, its a good day for cleaning and mopping then I guess.

Rod has 2 Drs. Appts. today. Just check ups...and then We get to go to Valarie's for dinner. I am excited. I don't mind cooking so much but I dislike the clean up.

Sunny, that's what they did for us. A branch had fallen and dented a section so I thought they could just replace a section but they said no. They make them to fit without a seam so we didn't have to have the whole house done but we did have to have one side replaced. They also added a downspout, which he said, should have been added to start with.

I'm trying to get Shelley to meet us at a shop in Monroe today. She's been hold up for so long she's starting to act crazy.

I'd say yes.

The next time DH has a day off from work I am going. First to the bank to set up phone banking, then to buy the grands b-day gifts for July and August. Then I am hitting up a large grocery chain and stocking up on a few months of supplies. I'll smother myself in hand sanitizer if I have to. lol

I am running low on everything. DD said everything she orders online through Walmart is being cancelled after ordering, due to no stock....she said it is ridiculous. The prices are rising as well, it is $10-$12 a pound for ground beef. I have no reason why, there is plenty of cattle in our own province...they aren't being imported. Cans of tomato soup that were .69 cents are now $2....and on and on.

Valarie said that if you order food online with Sam's Club ( bulk Wal-Mart) and they say they don't have an item, if you go into the store it may well be there, perhaps that is going on with DD. I will say, Wal-Mart told me they had 2 of my items then upon pick up said they were out of stock. I DO want to grocery shop myself As well. But not yet !

As far as my stock goes, I have started to add extras when we order food once a week. In the end I will be restocked with extras for the fall/winter...for if this should happen again.

I looked at buying ground beef at Wal-Mart. For 2.25 pounds it was a few cents under $12.00. I didn't order it. I do not need hamburgers that bad. The local meat I buy is frozen when you buy it, so no making burgers up ahead of time with it. Oh well

It's getting too expensive here to buy from my local grocery store....his prices have more than tripled. My SIL said the prices have raised a few cents in town but not even close to anything here. She said it might have cost her an extra $10 for $200 worth, here it costs an extra $300 for $200 worth. I was shocked on my last trip there....and came home with just a few necessities.

Hi all,
Sunny sounds like you have price gouging going on, prices here have gone up some but not that much. so glad we stocked our freezers early.. and hubby goes out and replaces perishables and what not every couple weeks, He is going a little cabin fever crazy even though he goes out once in a while. I haven't been out in 2 months except to get lab work and that was one in one out with masks on... when it first started.. they are opening stuff here but it is bad again already... so we are planning on the rest of the yr or longer being in..
He decided to reorganize the storage shed this last week or so.. put shelving up and then decided he needed to seal and paint the floor in it today,, so emptied the floor today, will seal early tomorrow and paint it...he isn't used to being idle for to long and this is driving he a little nuts... if it keeps up I will start him painting the inside of the house and he hates painting... we have 12 ft ceiling in some rooms and he hates ladders... but it would keep him busy.... at least weather this week is cooperating … only hitting 90'si in the afternoons... so he won't be to hot in the mornings to paint...

I spent yesterday cleaning up my office.. really got to be better about filing stuff and not letting it pile up... took forever but it's done now.. I really need to hem light blocking curtain and get them hung in here.. it's the room one of the grands likes to sleep in on and airbed and it gets a lot of light even with blinds in the window... maybe will dig out machine again and do that today... I get tired of reading all the time, just not enough to keep me really busy .. or what I can do when my body decides to go on strike and hurt all the time.. really don't like to live on Tylenol but have been lately.. arthritis is hitting my hands more all the time.. gets really frustrating and breaking my ankle sure didn't help... and then other days I am just fine , doesn't make a lot of sense.

Well off to sew maybe.. have to measure and cut of about a foot of curtain to fit window first..

Stay well!
Nana

I'm so glad to see you looking forward, all of you. I think we are in this for the long haul, too. If our numbers remain stable, I'll go out ti the restaurant supply place and see if I can get what I need. This month. Maybe again during the summer.

Yes I think we all are adjusting. Not liking the adjusting but doing it just the same.

We had a nice evening at Valarie's tonight She made us supper and she also made me a fantastic homemade white cake with cream cheese/whipped cream icing that had strawberries in it.

The kids were adorable...the hugs were great and if Cora had a nickel for every time that she whispered " surprise" to me, she would be a wealthy child.

Goodnight to you all!

Yay for a wonderful birthday Junie kissie

Tina, I am preparing myself for this going on for quite a long time. I wish I had the room to stockpile a bit more...small houses were not made for such things.

Sheri, rest when you can...have you ever tried 'Advil Arthritis' or 'Tylenol Arthritis' meds? They are supposed to work a lot better than regular Tylenol. I hope your DH learns to love painting...12 ft ceilings are a lot of work lol

We had a heavy frost this morning. People will not learn, many have planted their seedlings already....and there are no more to be found.

Thank you all for the Birthday wishes! It was nice.
Why even my youngest DD, who has yet to wish us Happy Anniversary, sent me a Christmas list...( She knows I like them early but rarely gives me one at all or wait a until I have bought her Christmas.)..Then a few minutes later she sent me a message wishing me a Happy Birthday !

Yes, it was a good day. I thank you all for making it even better.

Hmmm, not sure Tina.

I tried to start my weed trimmer...the pull rope is now hanging out(it didn't start either)and won't go back in. I hope it is just the spring that needs to be recoiled....I'll deal with it tomorrow. I wonder what it's like to have something go right? badday

When you ever find out what it is like to have something go right, be sure to hold a seminar so you can teach us all what that is like. winky

It sure storms here a lot.

About the sidebar calendar..I will read around..perhaps in the site news....When I go d out something, I will let you all know.

What is the sidebar calendar?

I tried to use my little tiller, wouldn't work, went to get my little chainsaw, can't find it and Johnny says he didn't take it which I saw him do, if the pressure washer doesn't work I'm giving up.

The calendar used to be in the sidebar every month. If I hovered over it, I could see every member birthday for that date. I would check it out but most often forgot before their day arrived. But it wasn't that much of a surprise.
I am turning 70 this year. I think we'll still be in SIP (shelter in place) then I'll probably order food in for it. That sounds fun and an interesting way to celebrate.
Sweet dreams all.

It was just a stuck spring...but this trimmer has seen better days. I can see the need for a new one by next year.

We are in need of a new coffeehouse. Tag, you're it grin
