I'm here to test your legendary bird identification abilities. lol Today, I saw the cutest little bird and I'd like to know what it is. I'll see if I can get pics tomorrow morning.

It was a small bird, tall and skinny. Maybe 6 inches tall? It had a brown head which faded into a pale, yellow breast. It's beak and eye-area were a dark brown/black. The wings were a matching dark brown/black (the undersides were a downy white), and the wingtips (only on the very end tip) were a brilliant red. The very edge of the tail feathers were a bright yellow. There were probably 6 of them in a tree and as I rushed home to get my camera, a bunch of people came out and started mowing/weedeating and scared them off.

The only thing I could think of was a meadowlark but they have a brown ring on their neck and I don't think they have the colored wing-tips/tail.

Any ideas/suggestions? Thanks!!

I'm not frequently in here, just thought he was the resident bird Identifier.

Terry! I'm so impressed!! That is it. And so quick!! What a cool bird. The girls will love being able to identify something other that "aunt Robin" birds. My sister's name is Robynn, so Robins are now called Aunt Robin's. Thank-you sooooo much!!

It IS Cedar Waxwings. They and Bohemian Waxwings are the ONLY bird in North America with those markings. The red on the tips of the ACTUALLY IS WAX! It comes from the berries they eat. The red tips are not always present as the wax is constantly being worn off and replaced. Cedar Waxwings are said to be the MOST handsome bird in America. They ALWAYS occur in flocks of from about three to three hundred birds. They are SPECTACULAR and are the birds I look forward to seeing the most. I usually have about 100 in my yard for the whole month of MAY, but this year the freeze destroyed my Mulberry crop and very few have come, having nothing to eat in my yard. I've seen maybe 30 about a week or two ago and none since.
