Now that spring has Sprung, what have you planted for your spring/Summer gardens?

I just bought a boatload (3 giant white, 1 giant red, 1 almost black, and a random mix of three) of Calla Lilies from MichiganBulb.com; I let the kiddos both choose one (Trey chose the red, Aubree chose the mix). I'm also thinking about getting some sort of vining flowers for filling in a cyclone fence vs slats.

What are your favorite flowers? What nurseries do you like to visit or order from? What are your goals in the garden this year?

Beautiful. I'm still under snow but I did make out my vegetable garden plan on paper....does that count? lol

I love daisy type flowers and I usually shop at the local nursery by DD's for annuals and perennials....but for shrubs, I go to Walmart. My goal this year is to simplify some flower beds and to expand my vegetable garden....maybe even start another plot.

Any progress is progress smile. We're still pretty cool right now, but it never really snows very hard in the Wilamette Valley, its leaving the valley that people tend to get hit.

With it warming up its finally about time to get some plans pushed out; our neighbor is having someone level some of her yard so she can grow her medicinal plants without having to worry about her mobility.

I saw a blue hosta a couple of weeks ago and now that I'm getting things planned I'm wishing I'd have grabbed it; it'd fit in well in my back yard (not that I really planned much back there this year).

Last fall I planted my surprise lilies, and my daffodils from Illinois. They are both up already and the daffodils are flowering. grin

My last frost date is April 16 th, or so I am told.
So after Easter I will put some tomatoes in containers, and perhaps some onion sets, I have my chives in a pot ready to be put outdoors. I planted them when the kids were small in my garden on " the farm, " , brought them with me to town and then moved them with me to missouri.

See, my back yard is planted in Bermuda grass, so I think me putting in any kind of garden is out of the question. I have heard that that kind of grass is extremely invasive.

I my put a few little plants in my rock landscaping in the front of the house.

We did plant 2 trees in the front of the house today We bought an Autumn Blaze Maple, and Rod bought me magnolia tree.

Our last frost in the Portland, OR area is about March 11th; though the gardening supplies had been showing up in February.

We have a dwarf tree on order that is a mix of fruits ("fruit cocktail tree"); nectarines, peaches, plums, and apricots all from the same tree. We haven't had a fruiting tree before, so it should be exciting when it produces in a couple of years.
[Linked Image]

We have a 5'x3' strip on one of our tiered sections of yard that is pretty much all succulents; we just bought some little furniture to place out sometime soon.

I found a guide here on ways to remove bermuda grass, the Solarization method sounds interesting and doesn't use chemicals.
Quote
Solarization is one of the least labor-intensive and most effective ways of controlling and killing Bermuda grass. This method of grass control works best during the hottest months of summer, and will kill both the grass on the surface as well as any underground stolons. Water the Bermuda grass normally, then spread a clear plastic tarp over the grass so the entire lawn is covered. Weigh down the edges of the tarp with rocks or bricks. The sun's rays will pass through the tarp and bake the underlying soil, effectively killing the grass and any other plants. After approximately four weeks, remove the tarp. You can rake away the dead grass or leave it in place and allow it to decompose.

Cool idea on the solarization.

Our frost date is after the third week of June.

Enjoy the new trees everyone.

We had a 5 in 1 apple tree...we had a moose eat it down to the main trunk through the night. We figured at least the main part would regrow but it was so stressed that it died.

Thanks for the information, James.

Good luck on the fruit tree, but you might want to research spraying the trees to keep pests away. It can make a difference.

Wow, the Canadian winter really holds on, doesn't it... How long of a growing season do you get, with the last frost being so late?

eek the most I'd have to deal with here in Portland is deer, and that's kind of rare here in the suburbs; though it's not as uncommon as one would think, since Oregon is ultimately one huge forest.

We get our last frost around the end of June then the first frost in the middle of September usually....but I have seen years where we got a frost every single month with the full moons.

Yes, the local nursery near my DD sells everything as a seedling from beans to zucchini. I can direct sow potatoes, lettuce, beans, radish, carrots, beets and turnips but everything else must be a seedling. Onions have to be bulbs.

I don't have room to set up seeding so I buy the plants...it can get $$.

Well, good, at least you can have a garden. Food tastes so much better from your own garden. I am glad you have access to what you need to grow what you want.

Well, if we are lucky we can grow any vegetable that takes 60-65 days or less from seed.

The only thing guaranteed to come back here is rhubarb, coneflowers and black eyed susan's....you couldn't kill those if you tried.

I did bring seeds from my flowers back home.....
