Now that spring has Sprung, what have you planted for your spring/Summer gardens?

I just bought a boatload (3 giant white, 1 giant red, 1 almost black, and a random mix of three) of Calla Lilies from MichiganBulb.com; I let the kiddos both choose one (Trey chose the red, Aubree chose the mix). I'm also thinking about getting some sort of vining flowers for filling in a cyclone fence vs slats.

What are your favorite flowers? What nurseries do you like to visit or order from? What are your goals in the garden this year?

Beautiful. I'm still under snow but I did make out my vegetable garden plan on paper....does that count? lol

I love daisy type flowers and I usually shop at the local nursery by DD's for annuals and perennials....but for shrubs, I go to Walmart. My goal this year is to simplify some flower beds and to expand my vegetable garden....maybe even start another plot.

Any progress is progress smile. We're still pretty cool right now, but it never really snows very hard in the Wilamette Valley, its leaving the valley that people tend to get hit.

With it warming up its finally about time to get some plans pushed out; our neighbor is having someone level some of her yard so she can grow her medicinal plants without having to worry about her mobility.

I saw a blue hosta a couple of weeks ago and now that I'm getting things planned I'm wishing I'd have grabbed it; it'd fit in well in my back yard (not that I really planned much back there this year).

Last fall I planted my surprise lilies, and my daffodils from Illinois. They are both up already and the daffodils are flowering. grin

My last frost date is April 16 th, or so I am told.
So after Easter I will put some tomatoes in containers, and perhaps some onion sets, I have my chives in a pot ready to be put outdoors. I planted them when the kids were small in my garden on " the farm, " , brought them with me to town and then moved them with me to missouri.

See, my back yard is planted in Bermuda grass, so I think me putting in any kind of garden is out of the question. I have heard that that kind of grass is extremely invasive.

I my put a few little plants in my rock landscaping in the front of the house.

We did plant 2 trees in the front of the house today We bought an Autumn Blaze Maple, and Rod bought me magnolia tree.

Our last frost in the Portland, OR area is about March 11th; though the gardening supplies had been showing up in February.

We have a dwarf tree on order that is a mix of fruits ("fruit cocktail tree"); nectarines, peaches, plums, and apricots all from the same tree. We haven't had a fruiting tree before, so it should be exciting when it produces in a couple of years.
[Linked Image]

We have a 5'x3' strip on one of our tiered sections of yard that is pretty much all succulents; we just bought some little furniture to place out sometime soon.

I found a guide here on ways to remove bermuda grass, the Solarization method sounds interesting and doesn't use chemicals.
Quote
Solarization is one of the least labor-intensive and most effective ways of controlling and killing Bermuda grass. This method of grass control works best during the hottest months of summer, and will kill both the grass on the surface as well as any underground stolons. Water the Bermuda grass normally, then spread a clear plastic tarp over the grass so the entire lawn is covered. Weigh down the edges of the tarp with rocks or bricks. The sun's rays will pass through the tarp and bake the underlying soil, effectively killing the grass and any other plants. After approximately four weeks, remove the tarp. You can rake away the dead grass or leave it in place and allow it to decompose.

Cool idea on the solarization.

Our frost date is after the third week of June.

Enjoy the new trees everyone.

We had a 5 in 1 apple tree...we had a moose eat it down to the main trunk through the night. We figured at least the main part would regrow but it was so stressed that it died.

Thanks for the information, James.

Good luck on the fruit tree, but you might want to research spraying the trees to keep pests away. It can make a difference.

Wow, the Canadian winter really holds on, doesn't it... How long of a growing season do you get, with the last frost being so late?

eek the most I'd have to deal with here in Portland is deer, and that's kind of rare here in the suburbs; though it's not as uncommon as one would think, since Oregon is ultimately one huge forest.

We get our last frost around the end of June then the first frost in the middle of September usually....but I have seen years where we got a frost every single month with the full moons.

Yes, the local nursery near my DD sells everything as a seedling from beans to zucchini. I can direct sow potatoes, lettuce, beans, radish, carrots, beets and turnips but everything else must be a seedling. Onions have to be bulbs.

I don't have room to set up seeding so I buy the plants...it can get $$.

Well, good, at least you can have a garden. Food tastes so much better from your own garden. I am glad you have access to what you need to grow what you want.

Well, if we are lucky we can grow any vegetable that takes 60-65 days or less from seed.

The only thing guaranteed to come back here is rhubarb, coneflowers and black eyed susan's....you couldn't kill those if you tried.

Sorry, Sheri..I hope things get better for you.

one of my 3 tomato plants are doing well as are my blackberries...but my onions are a lost cause, as it has been too hot. One tomato plant does not have enough sun so it is leggy and one is green but just sits there. My basil, chives and sage are doing well though...

It is so strange when one thinks about gardening. You all have to fight the heat and here we have to fight the cold....I guess that's why root veggies do so well here.

The cucumbers are coming in and there are some green tomatoes out there. If we could get a little rain things would really start producing. Unfortunately there"s no rain in sight for 10 days and the temps are in the 90s. Some potatoes have volunteered. Hope they are healthy.

Surprise! We got over 1/2 inch of rain last night. It came with a lot of wind so now we have a lot of branches down but I'm thankful for the rain.

We've had some rain and I've been getting bags of cucumber, the squash have blooms - finally, and there are green tomatoes ripening - I hope. The volunteer potato plants looks healthy and the egg plants are beautiful.

A little off topic but...I have a snowball tree that was eaten down to twigs. I figured that cutting it back some and spraying it with a homemade bug killer would work....this morning I passed by it and the smell coming from it is deadly. I did a search and apparently it is infected with a Viburnum leaf beetle. Holy cr@p...the smell is eye burning, I think I am going to cut it to the ground and pull it out by the end of the day.

Apparently they live in the bark of the tree. It was straggly looking the past three years, this year it's pathetic looking. Oh well, I have a purple leaf sandcherry that should be moved this Fall...I'll put it in its place.

My garden is coming along ....I only lost one pepper plant to the frost.

The sandcherry got broken from the weight of the snow, I had to cut it back....I hope it does well enough to be moved in the Fall. It is only 2 ft high.

I have flowers starting on my 'tiny tim' tomatoes.

I hope it does well also..perhaps cutting it back will help it in the long run. Perhaps it will give the roots less to work on recovering..( Got that ?)

I told r Rod if it rained, he didn't have to water the back yard flowers...well my tomato plant looks sick..I guess the overhang kept the rain off of that pot.... rolz

Sunny I got some pinwheels and put in my garden and they seem to have scared away the mockingbirds. We live in a wind tunnel so if you don"t have wind they won"t work for you.

Junie I sliced the egg plant, salt, olive oil, baked 20 minutes on each side, then turned on the broiler until they were sort of crispy. Johnny liked them.

Finally have fruit on the squash.

I have viburnum and sure hope that bug doesn"t find them. Sounds awful.

The smell from those viburnum bugs is just as bad as the damage Sheri...it is disgusting.

Pinwheels? I never thought of that, they sell them at the dollar store thumbup I might get some 'pea netting' there as well...I have never seen it so bad with the birds.

I am having trouble with birds eating on my berries as well but I still managed to get a gallon frozen before I left. But hey, I have not seen any Japanese Beetles......yet !

I'm starting to get flower buds forming on the potatoes....the sad part is that it is early for that. I hope it does not affect the potatoes growing.

I made strawberry freezer jam a few months back and I started taking it to my mother, who has dementia, and she's been eating a jar a day. I guess at 88 years old it doesn't matter what you eat but at this rate it will be all gone in a month. I think I'm going to stop taking it every time I go visit. I've tried to get her to just put it on her toast or on ice cream but she's eating it with a spoon.

Sorry to hear of your mom's dementia. I'd get some little 'condiment cups' and bring it to her that way. You can get the little plastic ones with covers at the dollar store here...I think you get 20 for a $1.

I have tiny little cukes starting on the pickling cuke plants....and my pepper plants are starting to form buds. grin

Thanks...it is a false raised bed. It goes down deep in the ground to keep the raspberries in their own block. thumbup

I love my little garden/storage shed.

what do you have growing there Sunny? It's way too hot for radishes here. Love them though.

Great on the tomatoes Junie. I planted 1 cherry tomato plant and it's producing an amazing amount of sweet little tomatoes.

And thanks

I have radishes, strawberries and baby cukes producing now. The regular cukes/tomatoes, peppers, potatoes and beans are flowering. Blueberries and raspberries are showing their unripe berries. I have a few green tomatoes showing on the cherry type. Carrots aren't doing the best this year though.

Your plants look healthy. I don't think I've taken a picture of my vegetable garden this year but I'm growing tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, potatoes, egg plant, bolita beans, okra. My lettuce, green peas, carrots, and radishes have been finished. I have to plant them when it's cold because we get hot too early.

A fall garden? Every year I say I'm going to plant a fall garden but our weather is so mild that I usually still have the summer stuff in the garden area into the end of September. With this extreme heat, if stuff dies out earlier, I'll plant lettuce and radish seeds. I've found that I don't like kale enough to plant it. One of my sisters loves it and plants a bunch of it. She eats it as a side dish, a soup, and in salads. Go figure. I've thought about trying some butternut squash but it's so hard to peel.

I agree about the garden the most I have ever had was green peppers that didn't make in the summer but did very well in the fall.

About the squash....can you cut it in half, roast it and then scoop it out of it's shell ?

No one but me will eat squash here so I never plant it....I just buy a few at the Fall fair.

I have small pickling cukes growing...I can't wait to start making preserves.

Junie, when I think of the difference on how we can these days to how our past generations did.....I don't worry as much. I don't know how they survived back in the old days with just melted wax to seal and very little vinegar.

I remember my mom buying wax..but as I remember, she just used it to put on top of jelly.

But yes, you are right. You have to wonder if people died and no one suspected the improperly canned items.

Tonight I trimmed up the branches that bore on my blackberries. Then I had to trim some of the bigger branches that are in the way when Rod cuts grass. I thought I should do it while we were having some cooler days.

Is there a borer that attacks raspberry vines? I know with the squash vine borer, the tips of the vines start to wilt then the entire plant dies. I've lost one plant this year to the borer. With squash, if it's caught soon enough, the borer can be cut out of the stem and sometimes the plant will live. Hope this is wrong.

I'll check the plant for borers....I've never heard of them around here but we never used to have earwigs either, now we are infested.

Your plants look great. It amazes me to see tomato plants get so tall...well done. I have also never seen an okra...vegetable or plant. How do you cook it?

I don't know why these pictures are so large. I edited them to clickable size. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Okra is a vegetable that we eat a lot of in the south. Plants are usually green and get over 6 feet tall and they grow pods. These are unusually in that they're short and red. I cut mine up and fry them. Some people use them in soup (which is good but I don't do that). They can also be roasted in the oven.

Sheri: how do you fry your okra. My Aunt used to fry them in a flour/corn meal coating. They were wonderful. So when we were still at the farm, I planted some one year...(no red on my okra plant). But anyway my fried ones were slimmy..what did I do wrong ?

Watered our 3 new trees, my lirope, my hostas, my house plants, and my potted plants.
I also filled 6 gallons with good water so I can water things one time before turning off my water softener system yet once again. I hate doing that.

I"ve got a bunch more flowers on the egg plant. Guess I"ll have to break down and eat a few more.

I have read that water softener water is not good for use in watering plants...the house plant or outdoor variety...so we have a switch on the water softener that allows us to bypass the softener so we can just water items like a normal person would.

Sheri, how do you fix egg plant.?

Bet your right about the softener. Will save you having to add salt too.

I've only fixed eggplant a few times. Last time I cut it thin and roasted it and made sort of chips. I think I'll try deep frying it this time. Or I might give it away to someone who likes it. I'm not planting it again.

My yellow bush beans are ripe...yummy.

I have bought a few eggplants in my life but the best recipe I found was slicing them thin into a lasagna.

I did half noodles, half eggplant. Although the recipe called for all eggplant...I thought that was overkill. lol

Cherry tomatoes are ripe.

Sounds like a yummy and healthy compromise on the eggplant lasagna.

I love cherry tomatoes. I have told Rod I want a place to plant tomatoes into the ground next year.

Everything that I planted in pots got invaded by earwigs. I will have to find an organic insecticide for next year.

I haven't started my lettuce or radishes yet. Hope to get them out tomorrow. This cold snap may have been the end of the okra and cucumbers.

It's been back in the 80's and everything is growing fine out there. I put out lettuce and radishes today. Pods are forming on the bolita beans.

I don't know about your climate, but every year I plant 1 cherry tomato plant and get hundreds of cherry tomatoes. They're so sweet. I eat them straight from the garden while I work out there. I sent my sister some seeds I saved year before last and she had volunteer plants this year. My one cherry plant always out performs the regular size tomatoes for me.

Well see, the people who used to live here planted Bermuda grass in the back yard and to put a plant in the ground there will be a very hard process. I know what you are saying though as back at the farm I had my cherry tomatoes reseed themselves as well. I had a nice Garden there.

Junie if you start digging you a hole now by planting season it will be ready. Maybe cover an area with cardboard or landscape fabric to kill that Bermuda grass. If you can find a straw bale or pine needle bale or 2 to sit on top of the area, the grass will be dead and you can maybe work it through the winter. I'm going to leave the bales I planted squash in this summer in the spot they're in and move them in the spring, tiller a little and plant potatoes there. There shouldn't be any grass growing under them.

I appreciate the advice, but if you kill bermuda grass the neighboring Bermuda grass can send roots up to 6 inches down to spread back to the cleared area. So it is very invasive. And that is my problem. I can clear away a place but by the end of the season the plants will be chocked completely out. If one is to have a garden in an area of Bermuda grass the best thing to do is to either make a very deep raised bed, and but a strong barrier down past the raised bed walls to keep the grass out of thebed, or if you want to use the area at ground level you need to use some type of metal plate and force it down well past the 6 inch depth, and then make sure all 4 sides of the metal meet so the grass cannot force it's way thru even a small crack.

I will probably make a place where there is still regular grass.....and use that area until the Bermuda grass spreads to that area. Then I guess it will be time for a tall raised bed.
But again, thanks.

That's just awful. I just read an article about eradicating it and the number 1 thing is Do not rototill the area. You will break the rhizomes up into small pieces that will create more plants. And weed eat as close as you can then cover with cardboard or carpet and make sure it doesn't grow over the cardboard or carpet - keep it wet and make sure the edges stay down. I feel for you. I didn't realize that wire grass is bermuda grass. I have a patch of it come up once in a while and I dig it out by the root. I'm going to start bagging it up and putting it in the trash instead of throwing it in the woods.

Yes, please do throw it away....I have a motion that the lady next door told the lady here to plant it..when I was complaining about it to her, she said yes we have that too...Then last week she said it had chocked her beautiful line of iris and that she had to pull the grass out...but by the spring it will be back....smh

We are eating the pole vine bean pods from the seeds that Junie sent a few years ago. DH now calls them "Carol's beans" ....I make sure to let a few pods ripen on the vine for the next year, that's the great thing about heirloom seeds.

Thanks again Junie kissie

The friend who sent me the seeds says they taste a lot like pinto beans but are a little milder. Not exactly sure what that means but we shall see.

I've never added butter to beans like Sunny but I'll give it a try. The same friend who sent the beans microwaves whole beets and puts a little butter on them before eating. Says it's delicious. Gonna try that too.

So sorry for that, but I hope you get a lot of cucumbers so you can put more good tho vs up for winter, Sunny.

Sheri..I am so sad....I have spent hours and I cannot find my pickled beet recipe..I am assuming it was in one of those little cook books that are out up by organizations...and I got rid of a big box of them when I moved. So I thought I will look online and surely I will find the recipe...well nope....

If anyone can help me...here is what I can remember: 1 can of sliced beets..reserve liquud. sugar, cloves, cinnamon, vinegar, reserved very liquid or water.....

I have a sad can of beets in the pantry waiting to get pickled........

Yes, I do miss my fresh home grown potatoes. I would grow 4 rows of them...I would buy 5 pounds, cut then up and then plant. I know I have said, but I had potatoes until the new year. Yep, I miss them dearly.

I didn't plant potatoes this year. Only had 2 volunteers show up and I realize how much I miss them. Garden potatoes are so much better than store bought. Planning on growing them again next year.

It's good to see you check in Sheri...we were worried.

I agree, they taste so much better...I'm wondering if it is because we don't 'poison' them?

I agree with you both about the potatoes. My garden is still going strong. Brought in cucumbers, tomatoes, and okra today. If I can get myself together tomorrow there are 5 or 6 eggplants ready to be pulled that I'll take to a friend.

It is stifling hot out there. I went into the garden today but didn't bring anything in. It's just too hot to do any work. I'll try and get out there early enough to beat the heat tomorrow. The garden is full of veges.

How many potatoes did you get Sunny ? I am so envious.

When you store them do not like them on one another. I stored mine in soda boxes, that I laid newspaper in. Then I did not allow one potato to touch another one. That way if one potato went bad it would not progress to the next. Mind you the whole cellar was filled with boxes, but so what ?

I set them out to dry on the floor of the shed...then I'll put them in old oat/grain bags(they are breathable). I probably got over 100 pounds for sure.

I just got in from picking the tomatoes...I'll put them in a card box with a banana to ripen. I'll have to can them because I got a 5 gallon pail full. The frost is getting the best of us so I'll just have to cover the peppers for another week before I harvest them as well.

I know a lady who cubes and blanches potatoes then freezes them. She fries them up and say they're just fine. We need a little cool. Over 100 again today.

I bet they would work in stews and soups as well.

I bet so. She's very happy with the way they turned out. I figured they'd be mushy but she says nope.

I make GG little bottles of chicken soup for school. They freeze well and the potatoes hold their shape...so I guess blanching them makes sense as well. Thanks for the reminder Sheri.

When Colt first started school he took a peanut butter sandwich every single day. He's the kind of person who eats one thing until he's sick of it, then moves to something else, never to eat the other thing again. The friend he ate lunch with was diagnosed with a peanut allergy so he had to start sitting at the no peanut table. Colt came home and told his mother he never wanted a peanut butter sandwich again so he could sit with his friend, and that he wanted to start taking frankfurters . Since that day, even though they've moved and he no longer sits with that friend, he takes 2 all beef franks wrapped in foil that his teacher warms in the microwave.

GG is spoiled. Since it is such a small school, they have 3 microwaves for children to use and heat up their lunch....a teacher supervises. There are no nuts of any kind allowed at her school, there are two children with deadly nut allergies...GB's daycare is the same, with one child though.

The only thing left in my garden now is my carrots.

Sunny, your GG is lucky too...our kids were never that lucky.

I have a handful of cherry tomatoes, but I am afraid to eat them...I have no idea where my SIL sprayed for spiders. Thing is my sage and chives are there as well. I was so looking forward to drying them. But oh well, too bad for Carol.

At one school it was an older student who was in charge of helping the little ones so he warmed Colt's franks but I think he's old enough to do it on his own now. I cut okra today, brought in tomatoes, only got 1 cucumber but there are lots of flowers still out there. Thankfully we got a little rain yesterday. I might have seen the tip top of a beet green. I thought the heat had murdered them all now I'm not sure.

2 gallons is great Junie, will you be making pies or smoothies?

I got about 5 gallons of carrots. I put two in the fridge, cut and froze 1...gave a gallon away and kept the gallon of deformed and small ones for the horses for treats.

I have frozen them loose on a cookie sheet then put them in 2 gallon freezer bsgs. That way I can take out what I need at any given time. I wil? Make pies, and then use some on cereal or with yogert. Plus the kids eat a lot of fruit, so I have it for them as well.

Yesterday, I gave them fresh frozen peaches that I had put up. They thought they were canned and would not touch them. So When I finally convinced them to try thrm, they gobbled them down.

5 gallons of carrots is a lot...good for you.

I love blackberries Junie. That's how I freeze blueberries.

As far as okra, it can be frozen and I've frozen tons this year. We've eaten it til we're sick of it. Actually brought in more this afternoon. It's been a good year for okra. I'm going to try stir frying some with egg plant tomorrow. We'll see if Johnny will eat it.

It's not time for my carrots to be ready yet. It will be sometime in the fall. I can't imagine getting as much as you Sunny. That's a lot.

My garden is still producing. I brought in tomatoes, beans, and okra today. These okra plants are still beautiful but the tomato plants are beginning to look a little bad.

I found 3 tiny cherry tomatoes yesterday while watering my plants. I may get one of 2 more, but that will be the end of this year's garden veggies here. I am also drying sage to use over the winter. I also have some chives, but I have not decided if I will save any of them or not.

Glad your garden is going strong yet.
