All fresh and new.

The weather is still very cold Junie, it snows a bit every few days....usually we'd get a milder bit of temps here and there but not this year. There are people already worried of running out of wood and the local plumber is going non stop dealing with frozen pipes. He has started telling people to put in an electric baseboard heater under their homes in crawl spaces. shock

We are toasty warm here though....with enough wood to keep us a year ahead if needed.

Today will be a bake sweets and make bread day.

yes they are settling in with me--they used to cry when Mom was leaving now like today, Cora yelled "bye Mommy"..& they all 3 were playing as if it were all normal. it will be fine.

They even let me wash their hair today, See Valarie & Brian are redoing their Bathroom & for the foreseeable future there is no bathtub in the house. So today I washed their hair & tomorrow I will give them a bath.

Something about the polar vortex splitting and sending really frigid cold the eastern Canada and USA perked my ears up. Keep safe, Sunny and all in its path. It sounds like a trip to the grocery store and things that don't take electricity to heat would be in order. I would be wrapping my pipes or something.

Rod & Brian are putting in new dry wall tomorrow night. The man who is putting in the new shower wall & such is coming around the 21st. so I guess it will be ready to go soon after that.

Yes I think too think a grocery run is a good idea, Sunny,

When we lived on "the farm" we kept our pipes that were in a crawl space (so exposed to more cols) wrapped. Then when the temps called for it, Rod would plug them in & keep the pipes heated so the water would not freeze.
we also would open the doors to the under the kitchen sink and the bathroom vanity. Those 2 actions made a lot of difference.

Tina, it is minus -26*F this morning...just shy of cancelling school. We have been forewarned of 'the storm of the Winter' for Sunday and Monday...we are expected to get at least two feet of snow in one storm with blizzard winds and extreme cold. I definitely will make a quick grocery run today since we are also getting a small storm of a few inches for tomorrow.

My pipes are wrapped and my crawl space is well insulated...I also bank my house by pushing all the snow tight against the house after each storm. I am well prepared thumbup
I am so thankful for a small house with an open floor plan in Winter...it makes it so easy to keep it warm.

Carol, my SIL has to open her kitchen cabinets at night in the old farmhouse....if not, it is sure to freeze. Her fault though...she took out the old wood stove and now only has a furnace(which does not throw heat in power outages) touched

We had an old Magic Chef cook/ heat stove combo when we moved into the farm. It was wonderful. But when we remodeled the kitchen it had to go. I replaced it with a Magic Chef stove but it had no heating box in it. I really missed it. When we moved into town, one of then things on our house list was a fireplace. We were happy to have it more than once. Since it had no blower, it would still work in the power outage times. I really miss it. There is no fireplace here although we do have a small gas stove on the sun porch Thing is there is no insulation on that porch. But I guess having it is better than nothing.
However, Valarie has wood burning fireplace if we were to ever be in need of heat.

God bless wood stoves. Even though they are helping the climate change happen. I am unconvinced that the measures currently used to produce power and heating is not worse. I am for solar and wind and better storage capabilities. New houses in California must come with solar panels in the future.
Pouring rain here again. Bummer because I need to go out.
Stay safe and warm, Sunny.

I would never be without a wood stove...it is a necessity where we live(in my opinion). I can't imagine having solar panels as a necessity build...but it would work very well where there is no snow I assume.

I still have not gone to the store.

Yesterday my hand mixer seized up, today my hair dryer quit working....what will tomorrow bring? tapfoot

Sunny, I think you should just stay in bed tomorrow. Lucky for me I have an extra hand mixer in the basement for when mine dies. It was my MIL's.

And oh...let the hair dryer cool off and try it again. It may have thermaled out. And you could take it apart & clean the hair out of it. That may be the issue as well.

Funny story. When my special curling iron stopped working, Rod took it apart to see if he could see what had went wrong. He could not, but after he put it back together it worked like a charm and has for years.

The mixer was a 'no fix' as well as the hair dryer. The gear seized in one and the thermostat went in the other....DH was in town though for work, so I called and at least got a hair dryer. That is a necessity here in my opinion as well. lol

I still never went for groceries, the small storm is only starting at Supper time though. I don't even want to think about the Polar storm heading for us on Monday. nervous

Yup, I have my groceries....and also GB.

DD had to work late due to the impending storm (it will shut down the office for a few days probably)...so I headed up to get him between the small storm we got last night. Then I have to bring him home later before the major storm starts tonight.

If the weather radar is right...we are in for a mess. They are calling for over 2 feet of snow with heavy winds and frost bite warnings....the people in the store yesterday were all in a panic. I bet you couldn't find bottled water anywhere at the moment.

I'll have time to take him home tonight Tina. The snow is starting a bit later than planned...I have supper on at the moment and will head out as soon as he is done eating.

I would keep him here but it is near impossible to take him to the barn in a major storm.....the barn is 3 acres behind my house.

Gee, I feel bad for complaining of a little ice, after hearing what you are in for., Sunny. I hope you can get GB home safely, and you back to your house before the storm begins to hit.

Val Nd I took the girls out early this morning to get diapers. I could not find houseslippers or sweatshirts to save my soul. I guess I will have to wait until next July to buy any....I do wish you could buy things "in season" instead of having to guess what you are going to need months ahead of time.

I wish I could make soup for supper.

Junie, order your slippers online like I do. They stopped carrying the kind I like in the stores but I found them cheaper online.

Weatherwise everything is molding here because of so much rain. The grout on my porch is turning green.

The weather is awful all over the planet...from what the news is showing. Stay safe..wherever you are.

Tina, it must be awful for those caught up in the mess of politics....most people are struggling from pay to pay, let alone not getting any and still having to go to work. It breaks my heart to see those having to seek assistance that used to be the ones giving. Thanks for caring kissie

GB is home and the storm is hitting at the moment. The elderly are in panic mode and it is sad to see. There is nothing we can do but let it fall and clean up afterwards...my cupboards are full, my house is warm and my generator is on stand by. DD can go across the road to a relative if need be who has a wood stove....I am thankful there is a family member nearby her.

I'll update as I can.

Stay safe, Sunny.
Our weather has been gorgeous. Since our nasty rains last week anyway. But our electricity went out a little after midnight and it was not repaired for 15 hours. Just half an hour ago. No rain in our 7 day forecast and highs at 65-70*. I'll take it.

15 hrs is a long time Tina, I hope you did not lose much of your food in the fridge and freezer....enjoy the sunshine.

Are you still getting ice Junie?

I have already gone out twice to clear snow....and I'll head out again in a bit. The winds are just filling in what I am clearing....it's a never ending battle. Mother Nature is winning this round.

Sorry Tina. I just read the wonderful temps you were to get. That is what I was commenting on. Sorry for your loss of power.

No no ice now but late this afternoon it began snowing again. We will see what it looks like around here tomorrow. I guess that is why her school cancelled school. But any time my girl and her babies do not have to be on the riad, I will take it.

Sorry for all the work you are having to do, Sunny. Come on spring !

I just listened to the weatherman and it's 20° with a wind chill of -14. MINUS!!! It's freezing out there and it's because of the wind. We're not used to this. The high tomorrow is 37°. I'm so glad I don't have to go anywhere.

Do any of you use the glasses that are supposed to help with night vision? I ordered a pair even though I read an article that says not to use them.

Oh great, Sheri.. DO let me know what you think of the glasses. I think I would like thrm. My mom says she has a pair, but when I asked to borrow them, she got evasive.

So sorry for your colder than usual temps! Keep warm and safe !

Sheri, I have never heard of such glasses....that is cool if they work.

It is still snowing...it is supposed to snow a bit each day for the rest of the week. The sad thing is that my driveway filled in with the blowing snow and it is too deep for the hand snow blower. I am going to have to use the tractor(I dislike driving the tractor for snow removal because you have to drive backwards the whole time). I am taking offers on anyone willing to come shovel windows and roofs as well. Any takers?

I told DH I know why all the co-workers he has are single/divorced....the women got tired of doing all the 'man work' in Winter haha

Good Morning ! Sitting on the sun porch with the small metal gas stove/fireplace on low. This is the only place I can sit and see the snow...this whole house has blinds and while there are blinds out here as well, I can still see out to see the snow. It did not show much the second time last evening. I have yet to see if hear a snow plow though. DH says that it is not cost effective to own a lot of snow removal equipment here because most of the time it just sits and gets older & rusts. Oh well. I guess we will be taking the truck to my therapy tomorrow.

You want to sit and see snow out the windows...and I want to sit and see the outside and not snow out my windows. That makes me chuckle when I think about it. grin

Do you have to travel far for therapy?

Well, since the pantry and freezer are full, sitting here in a warm house looking at the snow and the birds eating is relaxing. I do not have to travel for therapy until tomorrow around noon. I am hoping the roads are better by then. I just cut up all the veggies for cabbage soup. That is what is on the menu for tonight.

Getting ready for bed. But first I need to search my shorts and see if I can find a pair of shorts to wear to my water therapy tomorrow.

Sleep well everyone.

Stay warm, Sunny. I hear about your cold and I freeze here. You stay warm also, Carol. I don't think water therapy is good when you have to go out in the cold to go home. I hope the changing room is warm and has hair dryers.

Back from therapy. It was a grand time in the pool. And an easy time as well. Only one leg is bothered by the therapy, and only slightly at that. so I am happy with those results.

I was tired of it before it began I like snow in the yard, not on the sidewalks or roads.

And then only on Christmas morning and perhaps during th at dsy. Otherwise I do not like winter at all.

I like the cold, think it's healthier than the heat, but not when it's windy.

About those glasses, a man at church told Johnny he uses them but there are a lot of articles saying not to use them because they distort vision.

Cool new button.

More snow for tonight turning to freezing rain tomorrow. I am going to make a quick run for some milk, fresh fruit/veggies in a bit....just in case I am stranded for a few days with icy roads.

Too cute.

I got your milk...come by any time to pick it up lol

The roads are awful....some places the two lanes are down to one. They only have one large versatile blower to use...and it can't keep up with the banks of snow. I am glad I did not have to go far.

Hi all...school is cancelled again for the second time this week, We got a snow storm through the night and now it is freezing rain.

Junie, there are lots of snow plows but this is an enormous sized blower that can reach the highest banks from the front or back and raises itself to cut and blow the snow in stages. It is a strange looking machine that can bend itself sideways. It is like the largest pay loader you can find with an added blower mounted into it...It's hard to explain but there is only one that roams for all the divisions in the North here.

Tina, I plan to stay home to stay safe thumbup

Have a good one today.

Oh I see, Sunny. Sounds like a wonderful vehicle. Also sounds like 1 is plenty.
Sorry the weather caused school to be cancelled, but then I guess that is best given the situation. Keep warm and safe.

Not to worry, Tina. It is easy to miss posts. I have 8 sessions, with 2 week. But th e Hospital runs a fitness club as well, so at the end of therapy, I will be given a month free there, so I can continue my exercises for another month.

My DD has been up since 4:30 with one of the girls so she made them bacon & eggs. I will not need to make breakfast now. Perhaps we will have fruit later.

I hope the sessions help to end the pain for you.

It is a mess out there...strange thing is that DD lives 20 minutes from here and is getting all snow, we are getting ice pellets and freezing rain instead. I am surprised we still have power(knock on wood).

Yea, you probably should not have said that About the power......I will hope that TPTB did not hear you say that. Thanks for the therapy comment though.....org

Weather is like that.. Back home the 2 towns 6 miles apart would often have different weather... why

Plenty cold here...there is also black ice...or so "they" say...I have not been out.

Yes, even here the weather is different in different towns. Or areas within a single town. I understand that it works out like that nearly everywhere.

I have an annoying cough starting...no sore throat though. I am not going to visit GB this weekend...just in case this is the start of a nasty bug.

Good Morning from sunny Az,

We are heading out to breakfast with the inlaws this morning, Joe took the dog for his walk and I just paid a bill... nice to to have to make breakfast … it's 53* right now and the sun is out. so nice here... wish you could all come and visit while it's so crappy for you guys... got lots of room! Don't miss the snow at all!

Been working on getting all the tax stuff ready for our tax guy. going to go up to colo next month to see kids.. dd is having health problems so if it comes to surgery I will stay there to help … hopefully the weather will be nice while I am there...

Well better finish getting ready to go. it's one of those places that serve breakfast and lunch cafeteria style and bil likes to get both.... have a good day all!
Nana

Prayers for your DD, Nana.

That lingering cough turned into a 'hit by a brick' bug yesterday. I was so weak that I stayed in bed most of the day...it sure put the fear in DH. He kept trying to feed me toast and tea all day, then offered to go to my favorite pizza place to pick up supper. Mind you, the shop is a 40 minute drive away and passes his favorite coffee/bakery shop....and I was too sick to even look at pizza. So, I politely declined and told him that is was so sweet of him but I'll take the offer this week sometime when I am feeling better haha

I feel a bit better today but the cough persists.....I have a wheezing at night with it. It's always something.

Good morning.
I am so sorry about the being sick. Glad you are feeling better, but do not overdo, or you may find yourself sick all over again...That makes me smile about your DH. It made me realze..I cannot call my mom over to help me anymore. Too far aeay, and she does not have a car now.

Am not watching the girls. One is sick. Sounds like the flu or I would have offered to keep them anyway.

I hope the wee ones get better soon Junie.

I went for more cough drops today...the ones I had weren't doing anything. Even honey isn't working...I sound like an old smoker lol

Aubry has strep throat. She's on medicine but I'm not getting close. Sunny hope you feel better soon.

Johnny's thyroid doctor has move into a new office. Thankfully I went with him today because the doctor moved to an office building in downtown Charlotte where there is bumper to bumper traffic all day long. The office is on the 12th floor and that's not the top floor. The building has apartments on I don't know how many floors above the 12th, and has restaurants, a gym, and other businesses. There is 1 parking garage for all of this and some of the spaces are for residence only. What this means is that there is no parking for patients. Some of the on street parking spaces are marked for residents too. If he hadn't been able to be dropped off I don't know where he would have parked or how late he would have been for his appointment. It's ridiculous. He's going to find another doctor.

I guess we all are going to have to hide out in one of our houses until everyone is well. Sunny, you can drop by when you are well...One of the other of us will let you know where we are....We all need to be well. Sheri....gracious !I am so sorry for Johnny. I too am glad you went along. I hope he finds a new Dr to his liking soon.

Sunny, can you buy over-the-counter cough syrups in Canada ? I find Delsym works well. It is a simple cough suppresant but hey you can get rest with it.

Going to bed now..sweet dreams

It sounds like that the doctor will lose a lot of patients if parking can't be found...I hope he finds another doctor soon Sheri.

Yes Junie, we have cough syrups here....I also have the cough drops that have the medicine in the center. I think the trying to suppress the cough made it worse so I bought an expectorant(the old fashioned pine-tar kind) and some simple cough drops.

We are under a frost bite warning today, I think I'll spend the day cleaning and mopping...not to much got accomplished in the house the last few days.

The electrical wiring in my range just caught fire. I swear, it is just one thing after another it seems. DH came home from work and checked it out....guess who now has to go price a new stove? boohoo

I still haven't even replaced the mixer that blew the other week.

Yes, before my Heart attack I took the expectorant/suppressant combo cough syrup. A person would cough to beat the band but then you got a rest from the coughing, Now a days all I can take is the suppressant. I get to suffer otherwise. I LOVE the pine tar cough syrup I must say I prefer the children's version (there is an adult dosage on the bottle)
but I bet I have to go "home" to buy it....I am having a very hard time getting normal everyday items here.....

Look on line, Carol. It,s where to find the things that seem unavailable where you are. Sometimes a product will tell you where you can find it, locally.

Yes I saw that, Tina, but thanks I will......

we shall see if ours is cancelled. but then if the mail cannot get to the Cape Giardeau processing PO how can we get mail here to be put out for delivery.....
I am also wondering if my DD has work tomorrow. (she is a school teacher remember)
she said they will not call her until tomorrow morning to say....BUT several districts have already cancelled for tomorrow because of the sub zero temperatures.

It warmed up here....just to snow today.

Oh well, it is the fluffy kind of snow so it will be easy to scoop. I guess I have to look at the positive side of it. lol

The maps I saw put you above the polar vortex, Sunny. So that makes you safer than, I think. I really feel for the people who aren't used to it like Alabama. Their buildings aren't built to keep the cold out or to keep plumbing working and such. Wrapping pipes here will keep them from freezing but they attract things that love that wrapping for nesting materials and you need to do it annually for it to work. And trap the critters, as well. It's all an ongoing battle. Circular.

Oh my, Tina...I am so sorry to hear about the work that you have to go thru to keep things thawed.
I had not thought of it, but you are right about areas not being prepared for the cold. That is a real shame that they are having to deal with cold like this. I will be thinking of them.

No, don't feel bad for me. John got very tired of the critters chewing on wiring and pipes. He set about protecting as much as he could. And he trapped as many critters as he could. I continue the trapping and use a lot of diatamecious earth to keep the bugs and spiders away. It all works well.

It's a no-win situation either way it seems Tina.

The cold weather is on it's way for us tomorrow...but that is the norm here. In a few weeks we'll be back to minus -40's. The middle of February likes to frostbite us when it can lol

I just can't imagine what the people who have never experienced our kind of cold before are going to do. Just going outside is going to damage their lungs.

I feel for these people too. I can't imagine what will happen to homeless people or outside animals. Our high was 47° today but very windy which made it seem cold.

Yes the cold had a lot of us worried. I had not even thought of a person ' s eyes...but they too need to be protected. My thoughts are with all of those needing to keep warm.

When the girls came in today they had hooded sweatshirt jackets on under their fleece jackets, hats on over the hoods, mittens, and neck scarves on...they had sweat pants on and boots...and this was to just walk from the car to inside our garage. I guess they should have wore their sunglasses in as well...

And before you ask, kids cannot have heavy coats on when riding in a car...they cannot be properly strapped into their car seats unless they are just in jackets or sweaters.

Goodnight everyone, keep warm.

This is sad to say but....you won't find a child here in Winter not wearing a full snow suit strapped into their car seats. It is just impossible not to do so in our cold....and the strange thing is that I don't even think we have a law saying not to.

I'm off to start a new coffeehouse...come on over. grin

It is not sad. It is practical. A must in your climate and road conditions. My kids wore snow suits under their five point seat belts in Rochester, NY when we lived there. We also drove slower and very carefully. Never at speeds to endanger life and limb.
The law is faulty, I think. Or the car seats are, in my opinion. Making a parent choose between life saving gear for their kids, dress for weather or seatbelts.
I did have a sleeping bag kind of thing meant to accommodate a 5-point for newborns. But it was quickly outgrown and I've never seen any such for toddlers.
