Speaking of advent calendars. One year, when Tori was little, I got her a calendar that had a tiny treat behind each day of the month. Instructions were to pull a tab each day starting at the top and under the tab you'll find how many more days until Christmas and a little prize. Turns out the prize was chocolate pieces and all the tabs on Tori's advent calendar were pulled and prizes eaten that very first day.

That's funny, Sheri. I think very few of them last 24 days. I made one for my kids that was out of a good sized box made like a dollhouse.with doors and windows that opened to find treats behind them. I wonder what happened to it.
Sweet dreams all.

My mom always buys them the same chocolate advent calendar. I used to make DD's as a child (as Tina did) but luckily now they are sold at the dollar store lol GB opened two doors on his here yesterday.

We are under a severe storm warning for tonight...yay, not.

I hope that Sunny is doing OK..

Back where I used to live had a tornado go thru. A very popular vintage car sales facility there had it run right thru it. Sad thing is that a few years back a fire destroyed most of the place, and now the tornado ran thru what they had rebuilt...SAD Luckily no one was hurt

I will say goodnight now--Sweet Dreams

I watched news about 24 tornadoes in southern Illinois today, Carol. I was glad you moved. And then I heard a death was caused by a severe storm in Mo from the same system. I'm glad you weren't impacted.
Sweet dreams.

Thanks, Tina---

Here we were supposed to get severe weather, WE even discussed where in our house would be the best place to go during the storm.
But all that we ever got was a bit of wind and then about 5 minutes of rain.
In view of what happened back home and in Taylorville, IL we were blessed.

I was just watching the news..I am glad that you are safe as well Junie. Tina, I haven't heard much more about the fires...are they under control now?

We got about 10 inches of snow. The steps and car is clean...I decided to grab some breakfast before heading out to clean the driveway. Everything is snow covered and the sun is shining...it looks so pretty out there with the snow twinkling.

I got out to do some Christmas shopping today. It was nice, even if DH was with me...( He drove)

Yes, the fires are out, I think. Last weeks rains all but finished off the one in northern Cal. And did finish the one in SoCal.
I didn't come in this morning. My only excuse is I was cold. I am still cold.
Sweet dreams all.

I can't imagine 10 inches of snow. We wouldn't be able to go any where until the spring thaw.

Hope you got warm Tina.

I hope you feel warmer this a.m. Tina.

Sheri, I think you should come for a visit in February...I'll even let you drive haha

Junie, DH and I might go shopping together twice a year....and that is enough.

I have to go for a few groceries today at the local store. I also have to go check the mess at my SIL's house...it seems her dryer almost caught fire. It scorched the floor and wall when they noticed. She just bought the new dryer a little over a year ago. She wants me to check to see if it's her fault or the dryers.

If Sheri is driving, I will come along too.

It gets worse than shopping. Since we have moved here, he watches the bank acct.(first time since we were married in 1979) and he asked me what I bought. Then if I pay a bill he says he did not see, he wants to know how much it was. Since he has never done either of these things in almost 40 years, it feels a bit controlling. I think he is just board.

Good wishes when you check your SIL's dryer.

Junie sounds like Rod has too much time on his hands so he's getting in your hair. Johnny says he'll never retire. :)

It would be a fun ride with me driving in that snow. We've got snow in our forecast for the weekend. Oh no.

DH and I keep a little notebook on our dresser and mark everything that we buy or bills that are paid with cash. At first I didn't like the idea but now that I see that DH spends more on 'stupid' things than I...it has become a positive thing for me if he questions anything lol

Not sure what today holds.

SIL's dryer was from a blocked vent...that old farmhouse would have burned down an a few hrs if it would have ignited instead of just melting the cushion floor and paint on the walls. The repairman will come this week to give the o.k. on whether the dryer can be used since the cord was scorched as well in a small area where it touched the wall.

Oh my your SIL is lucky it didn't catch fire... I am paranoid about that so we clean vents twice a yr....

Hubby went to doc for his eye problem and will have surgery to remove the growths next week, it's in office thing and he will need to be patched for a day or so , so I get to drive again... good thing I have an I phone to tell me where to go … I have no sense of direction at all!

My doc more or less told me to start dieting and lose this extra weight I have on me.. nothing I didn't know... so I am going to start slowly and start walking as much as this foot will let me... guess I may as well get used to it hurting and hopefully less weight will help that too.

I am going to get the box of stuff ready to send the kids.. not exactly a Christmas present, we kept one of the Nintendo 64's we had and theirs quit so they want this one, Carrie left a sweater here so will send that and Derek's birthday card.. can't believe he will be 16... where does time go?

Well off to set up my Christmas village, last bit to do of the decorating... hubby is going after our scrips in a few... doc increased my dosage on one so hope that helps the weightloss efforts.. thyroid meds.. my old doc never changed dosage and she was not happy with that at all... said it should have been done every yr or so... really like her but am afraid she may retire soon, she had to have back surgery , has rheumatoid arthritis and may be forced to … hate the idea of starting over again so soon.

Have a good afternoon and evening all
Nana

Nana: I am sorry you have no one to drive you to your Hubby's appt. Is there a car service available ??

Have fun setting up your Christmas Village. I miss mine--they are currently in the bottom shelf of my curio. I got rid the coffee table I put them on years ago.
I am hopeful that the increase of he thyroid meds will help you lose weight.

I wish everyone a good night. I am off to dreamland.

That is the bad thing about ordering things online. They come "so" disassembled. and the foreign directions they just as well not send them... egad
I hope you and or Carey can figure the assembly all out. However I am glad they're there.

I went to Dollar General today..got some diapers (Micky Mouse for Grandma's house) and a few gift cards to send as gifts.

Gosh Sunny. Glad you figured out your SIL's dryer. I knew a person who's house caught on fire and when the insurance adjuster figured out it was the dryer and the laundry room door wasn't shut, the insurance refused to pay. From then on I shut the laundry room door when the dryer is on even if I'm home. I'm not good at reading directions and putting stuff together. Ginger and Colt are the ones who can do it. Not Chris. If there are pictures Colt's your man. :)

Thanks about the diapers, Tina. One of the girls, Heidi, usually wants nothing to do with "Mickey Mouse" diapers. So I have her mom's diapers here for her. The other day she did tell me that mom had to buy Mickey mouse diapers. Perhaps she wants to wear them but feels a loyalty to get mom ?

So what if I really do not have a laundry room. It is more of an aclove with back folding doors on it. And my DH says it is not a good idea to keep the doors closed while the dryer is on.....

Going to bed now. I bet the kids wake early.

My clothes dryer area is the same...just a closet with doors. Mind you, we have no insurance....so it is never left on unless we are in the house.

It is cold today. Today is the only day that DH has off for a bit so we have no choice but to really bundle the kids to get the tree. Oh well, it just means that we cut the first one close to the truck lol

Morning ,

Hi all, it's hubby's turn to make breakfast... hopefully he is doing that, do hear the coffee maker …..
Guess I am elected to drive home on Monday from hubby eye procedure... thank goodness for a phone with driving directions... it's not far(nothing is here) just been a long time since I drove much at all...
We have been chilly and rainy the last few days.....did get my village up and that was last but of décor, hubby has to hang my wall hanging of the 3 kinds,, tapestry my Mom had since before I was born.. told me her Mom got it from a traveling salesmen when she was in highschool… so it's probably close to 100 yrs old... still in good shape though... I got brave and washed it a couple yrs ago.. more or less in woolite and let it soak then rinsed it well, dried it on a table outside and it didn't even fade...

Well off to see if breakfast is ready... don't think it is … oh well he did make the coffee at least...

Have a good day all … have I said how much I love my hubby having hearing aids... I may just keep him after all....! LOL!

Nana

Sherri, sounds like you've got a real treasure in that wall hanging. Can you post a picture? I so wish my step dad would wear his hearing aids. He says they bother him but it bothers every one when he's trying to be part of the conversation and can't hear.

Sunny did you get your tree? We're expecting snow and it's been a BIG extravaganza on the news. Schools are already closed for Monday and Tuesday. Churches are closed tomorrow. We have yet to see the first flake :) It's been raining all day which the weatherman says is going to make the snow worse. Not sure why but that's what they keep saying.

Junie it is nice when your grans are so sweet and well behaved. There used to be a family with 3 little stair step boys, who came to church every Sunday dressed in nice shirts with bow ties, and they sat on the pew with their mother and dad and were so well behaved and cute. I often told the boys how grown up they acted and commented to their parents. People did and still do comment about how nice Darbi and Colby are. Not so much Aubry or Colt.

Sheri: Thanks so much about grands--these 4 are quiet and well behaved, when out anyway.
The 3 of 4 in Virginia are another story. They are manageable if their Momma & Dad are not around BUT the moment they walk in they are monsters. and I know their Momma makes them mind---oh well (the 4th is just 2 months old so far so....)

Even I heard you were going to get snow-0we can hope they are wrong. and it is possible the mess we were supposed to get here never happened either.

I hope you are all avoiding that bad storm in the South.

Sheri, we got our tree but we did not get to cut it. It was so cold and the man that owns the tree place put a stop to cutting your own, and put up his prices...so we left there and bought one at another tree farm. We put it up this morning. GB was just throwing the plastic balls at the tree and hoping they got caught on the branch. It was so funny, my mother was here and livid about it.

That's funny, Sunny. I think I've had a toddler that tried that. Of course I didn't allow it and taught them how to hang things. But I didn't get angry about it either. It's all one continuous learning experience.

Junie, Colt isn't such a handful with me anymore but is a bit worse when his mother is around. I think he's considered well behaved these days; his teacher says he's an angel in class and the music teacher loves him so I'm guessing he's better for strangers.

Many moons ago I took care of a little boy for an afternoon for a friend and he took every ornament that he could reach off my tree - one at a time when I wasn't watching. He was in the den and I was in and out cleaning and cooking and such and I wondered why he didn't want to come in the kitchen with me or play in Ginger's room where the toys were. It took a while to notice that ornaments were missing. None of them were breakable so I pretended I didn't notice and let him continue until they were all off. Kept him occupied all afternoon. By the time his mother returned the bottom half of the tree was undecorated.

We only got rain last night and today but Charlotte is a mess. Trees down, power out, roads bad.

How Colt is is how my 3 Grandsons are. Out in public they are very well behaved. as far as I know they are good in school as well.
The oldest has just been put in a gifted program so I guess there are no issues at school.

IMHO: I think ALL kids that are taught well at home are better for strangers. It is just that kids will be kids when they are at home with their siblings and parents...Perhaps that is how it should be.

Glad the horrid weather missed you.

goodnight everyone sweet dreams

Kids are spoiled these days...and with the new 'no hands on' discipline, they have no fear. If I would have even pulled half of what my grands did....I'd not be able to sit for a week. I fear what is ahead for the future with them all.

I pray the storm damage is short lived for you all. They are broadcasting it on the news here...it certainly is a mess if you are not used to getting storms such as that. Do they even get snow in Texas any other time?

Colt is 7 and I'm convinced if he was in a public school with 28 students in one classroom his earlier teachers would have been begging his parents to put him on ADHD meds. He just could not be still even if he tried. I grabbed both his arms one time and told him to STOP IT and he looked me dead in the eyes and said "I can't GiGi" and I could see he was telling the truth. But as he's gotten older he's more able to control himself. I'm glad he wasn't medicated. As a school nurse I saw too many kids on medication to pacify a teacher or a parent. In most cases I'm against medicating children but for a few it does make their life bearable for them and for the teachers. To me it was a mistake to make it a disability that is compensated with money to the parents. Why do the parents needs money because their child is ADHD. These children can get Medicaid that pays for doctors visits and medication so there is no out of pocket to the parent. Off my soapbox.

It's been snowing here but I can't imagine it will stick because it's so wet. Trees are down all over surrounding areas but so far we've been missed with this mess.

It does snow in Tx almost every year. Just not everywhere. Like where I live in a desert-y part of SoCal. Our mountains see snow most winters and skiing is done. And the cold moves down the mountains and chills my toes and nose.

My one SIL was on meds when he was young. I think often how his middle boy would benefit from them but of course he will never be on them. The good news is "Daddy" is a very well adjusted high functioning member of society now, so all should be good with the boys by the time they grow up.

Junie, Yay for the decorated tree....the kids must have loved it.

I did not get my 'me' day after all. I did end up cooking my meat for my meat pies though...I'll make the pie crusts after lunch to finish them. I am volunteering this morning at the skating rink for the GG's school skating party.

I hope those larders got stocked well Tina.

Good Morning, Everyone.

Sunny, have fun at the skating rink. Christmas is the best time of year, to my notion anyway.

It is raining here. Perhaps we are far enough south that we will get more rain tbatsnow. Does 1 inch of rain = 1 foot of snow, you know If the rain were snow instead ? Does anyone know ? I guess I should Google it.

Meat pies are made.

Here 1 inch of rain equals 10 inches of snow. I heard it depends on where you live... idea

Glad that your meat pies are made. I love when a job is done.

I get to watch The Big Bang Theory, Young Sheldon, and then Mom.

What exactly is a meat pie? Just what it sounds like? Meat in a crust? And what is a minced meat pie? Meat chopped finely? I've had something called hamburger pie and it was cooked hamburger in a pie crust. I liked it.

We had 2 inches of rain in my rain gauge after our storm Saturday. Glad we didn't have the snow because it was a lot for around here.

Come on over Tina.

Meat pies are 5 parts cooked shredded beef roast to 3 parts shredded pork roast, with added onions, salt and pepper. You add beef broth to keep it moist and bake it in a pie crust...top and bottom. It is a Christmas tradition here.

GG's school turkey dinner today.

I'd like a meat pie too please.

Rained all day AGAIN. Where was this when my garden was drying up?

Johnny's brother in law had a stroke last night and died. I'm trying to be nice to Johnny today :)

I am so sorry for the loss in your family Sheri...deaths around holidays are twice as sad I think.

It is snowing, a fluffy pretty kind. Although DH probably doesn't think so....he got called out at 4 a.m.

I have 150 egg, taco, donair and pizza rolls to make today. luv

I wonder about these things, Sunny. Do you just have these at your house for family and friends? Or do you prepare them to take to others? Are your meat pies little like pot pies or bigger like 8-10 inch pies? Do you freeze everything until needed? Are things fried or baked? Frozen before cooked?
I am nosy!
Sweet dreams all.

Tina, the meat pies are deep dish, 10 inch pies. They are frozen and baked when we want them for a meal. They are really called a 'Tourtiere' ...a traditional meal served after the Christmas mass on Christmas eve or for breakfast the day of. The rolls(just like you'd buy at a Chinese restaurant) are all deep fried then frozen in bags. I make cabbage egg rolls, pizza rolls, taco rolls and donair rolls. I give some to DD and my mother...and feed those who visit during the holidays. I have sweets to make this week as well...I make trays to give out to a few family members also. I am trying hard to keep my late grandmother' traditions alive.

We are going today to DD's to decorate her tree, visit Santa for a treat...then I'll take the kids at the end of day to the coffee shop for a sweet and hot chocolate. grin

Thanks so much for answering my nosiness, Sunny. I looked up donair rolls last night and got a craving. All different kinds popped up. I love food. I love cooking ahead.

No problem Tina...I like learning of new foods as well. Donairs are delicious...I make my own meat and sauce.

Well, the kids decorated the tree, got a treat from Santa(he arrived on a fire truck trading treats for canned items for the local food bank) and then got their sweet and milk....apparently my grands don't like hot chocolate. That's o.k. because their Grammie does lol

I burned my mouth once with hot chocolate when I was little. And didn't have any more for years. I still only like drinks warm, not hot.
Do your grands like cold chocolate milk, Sunny?

I like Hot Cjocolate. When my sister and I were in upper grade school, we often had to walk home from school as my mom was working afternoons. In the winter we were often so cold from the wall that we made got chocolate and buttered toast just to warm us up. Drinking hot chocolate still reminds me of those times.

Tina, my grandson will drink chocolate milk but not GG. She does not like chocolate....I don't think we are really related lol

Hot chocolate is a comfort food for me as well Junie, I have fond memories of it with all the outdoor activities we did as children. It is a staple here for sliding parties and such.

They are calling for 6 to 8 inches of snow by tonight...only to start later in the day though so school was not cancelled.

Good Morning ,

Came in to do my bills as it is payday... credit union hasn't updated to show deposit is made so guess I will play here for a while and see if it updates soon... if it wasn't such a big project to change credit unions and banking info I would change .. this one is very slow about everything...

Hubby had his eye surgery and it came out well, he looks like someone hit him in his eye very bloodshot, but his vision is only slightly blurry so they said he is safe to drive... he will have to get new glasses after first of yr though so that will be added to budget , for me as well... always something..

We sent off our Christmas pkgs and cards to kids and grands, birthday for Derek too... how can he be 16 already? really wish they would stay little but guess time marches on …. grocery shopped yesterday too, got Christmas dinner fixens, small turkey, smallest I have every done... so hope I can figure out how to cook it... LOL!

Well guess I could clean up this office while I am waiting for accts to update... always last room to get done.. you would think I hated filing and putting stuff away... LOL!

Have a good day all,

Nana

Morning Tina....

thanks for the vote of confidence in cooking the small turkey... it's been awhile since I really cooked.. but figure I can do most of the Christmas dinner ahead and rewarm it for the day... staying on my feet for very long is still a challenge, ankle just does not like me standing some days... but will manage and we do have an island I can sit at if I have to... just doesn't come naturally to sit and do meal prep stuff... relearning is not always easy...

Well gotta clean this office up … been playing instead.... LOL!

Ginger is coming for Christmas this weekend. What can I cook? No one likes turkey. Shelley's family doesn't like ham. Seems like I fix a roast every time they come so I'm trying to think of something else.

Have an Italian meal. Lasagna is easy..as is just Spaghetti, Then a salad and some type of dinner rolls. Make a dessert or 2 that you can make up the day before---(a batch or 2 of cookies???)

stiffed cantaloni is easy too. I have a good salad recipe I could give you if you like.

If you would like to make it easier, make sloppy Joes or BBQ Beef get some buns & make cheesy potatoes to go with,,,or company potatoes (Both casseroles)

In my family we get together the weekend after Thanksgiving---so we always have an Italian meal of some kind then it goes over well.
Let us know what you decide, Sheri.

I am headed to bed sweet Dreams

You could go Mexican and do enchiladas or something. (I love tamales but good ones are kind of pricy). Salsa on the side. Serve with some light Spanish rice and retried beans and a salad. Follow it up with a favorite dessert. This is my go-to when feeding a crowd.
Sweet dreams all.

I always do Chinese food when feeding a crowd for family functions. Although, turkey is the staple here for Christmas. I have never eaten tamales...but they do look good on television. lol

School has been cancelled and GG's concert is put off until tomorrow. I sure have a mess of snow to tackle out there this morning....the roofs need a pass as well later this week.

Morning ,

All of those sound good to me, my daughter's inlaws are Italian and they do the lasagna and spaghetti for Christmas Eve... some people do fish too... we usually do a shrimp tray and I make a hot crockpot soup too... with lots of crusty bread...

Well off to get ready to go to store, going to look at tile for living room, family room and halls... will do carpet for bedrooms... and office... think tile will be wood look , easy to maintain and sweep dog hair from... I like easy the older I get...LOL!

Have a good day all... left some hot pocket type rolls in kitchen... and iced tea, hot teas and coffee too... enjoy!

GG had her concert today then I had a meeting with a school guidance counselor. Then I came home and I got the two shed roof shoveled...only the house left to do tomorrow. I remember when I could do them all in one day. rolz

Sweet dreams all.
What kind of sauce do you use for donair dipping, Sunny? What is the meat seasoned with?

Tina, this is the link to the recipe(meat and sauce) we all use...except I substitute a pinch of cayenne instead of the 2 tsp it calls for, that's too much heat for my taste buds.

https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/211191/the-original-donair-from-the-east-coast-of-canada/

We are still under the heavy rainfall warning for tomorrow. touched

Yeah, I would lighten up on the heat too. I am not much into cayenne.
Today is a good day to clean house. At least until it gets too hot.
Good morning.

I like short bread cookies too. I've never made any but Panera Bread sells them sometimes. Junie do you have a Panera in your area?

I thought all shortbread was cookies. Unless it was used as a crust for something else. Even then, I've cut into bar type cookies then.
