Hello everyone from Chesterfield Va.

For the first time this spring I planted a dozen sweet potatoes plants and now these are taking a lot of room in my garden, when shoud I start digging them out. I am familiar with red potatoes as I grow them every year but I have no clue as to when these should be ready. Thank you

Hi Spearo and welcome. Usually sweet potatoes are ready to harvest when the leaves and ends of the vines have started turning to yellow, but you can leave them in the ground up until the fall frost. The vines definitely take up a lot of room.

Usually, when the leaves have yellowed to about 1/3, it is time to harvest them.
