French Toast I

4 large eggs
2/3 C. milk....
(whole or heavy cream would be nice to use.)
1/4 C. Flour...I used 2 TB...flour makes it more like a batter...you could even leave it out
1/4 C. Sugar
1/4 tsp salt
1 tsp cinnamon.....(I left thus out..some recipes even add nutmeg as well.)
1 tsp. Vanilla
8 slices of bread...I used regular white sliced bread--thick sliced such as Texas toast or hand sliced Italian bread is suggested.

1) Preheat Griddle to 350*F ( my griddle does not have a temperature control) a frying pan works well also.

2) blend well all but the bread in a flat container such as a 9 x 9 baking dish....The flour may not completely blend, do not let this worry you, all will be fine. You could .....try doing this in a blander then add to the 9 x 9 pan for dipping.

3) Butter hot griddle and then put bread slices one at the time into batter---turn over to completely coat. put on griddle. cook as you would a pancake. I turned each slice a few times to make sure the egg was cooked.

4) I butter then add any topping you would use on a pancake...OR powdered sugar is good also.

Overnight French Toast.....Done in the oven........Bake at 350*F

1 LB loaf of French or Cinnamon bread..(I am thinking Italian bread would be better than French)
1 C. Heavy Cream
8 Lg. Eggs
2 C. Whole Milk
6 TB Light Brown Sugar
1-1/2 tsp. Cinnamon
1/2 tsp Kosher Salt....or 1/4 tsp table salt
1 TB Vanilla

Butter for greasing pan

TOPPING...optional

4 TB Packed Light Brown Sugar
4 TB Granulated Sugar
1/2 tsp. Cinnamon
1/4 tsp. Nutmeg
2 TB Butter

1) Preheat oven to 350*F
2) Lightly butter the bottom and sides of a 9 x 13 baking dish.
3) Cut bread into 1 inch chunks, place in dish.
4) Whisk eggs in a large bowl...then add the rest of the ingredients except the butter for greasing.
5) Pour this mixture over the bread
6) gently toss to coat bread evenly....spread out evenly in the 9 x 13 dish.
7) cover dish and place in refrigerator overnight.

TOPPING...optional

1) Mix sugars & Spices , cut in butter. like making a strussle
remove bread mixture from the fridge, remove cover and sprinkle topping onto bread mixture.
2) Bake at 350 for 40 to 50 minutes.
3) let rest 5 to 10 minutes...enjoy !

You can leave the topping off...and proceed with the rest...This puts me in the mind of a bread pudding ????

I'm thinking the same thing...more like a bread pudding. Either way...it makes a good breakfast.

very true...but if I am going to "top" a bread pudding, I would like to use a homemade vanilla pudding.

Man that's like a dessert. I'd definitely have to take a nap after eating that.

Both sound really yummy; I think I'd need a walk afterwards though, hehe.

You all do not need to have an exercise regime, you just need to chase grandkids around.
Or kids, as in James case.

Is that like Russian Tea Cakes ( flour, powdered sugar, butter and pecans.....although you would use walnuts?). If so I have a great recipe.
