I"m new to gardening, but I"d like to grow the best tasting tomatoes possible for eating raw in salads and sandwiches.

I would like them to be disease resistant, determinant, and suitable for growing in New Jersey, and I would like them to be ready to harvest within no more than 100 days or so, since it"s already late spring.

(And since it IS late spring already, I don"t think I would need to start them indoors, but please correct me if I"m wrong about that.)

I don"t mind if the plants need to be pruned and/or staked, and I don't mind having to prepare the soil for proper pH, etc. And the plants don"t have to produce giant fruit.

But trying to research online what variety to grow, it seems like making the best selection is a lot more complicated than I thought it would be.

Any suggestions about what variety would be best for me to grow?

I found online that Ramapo tomatoes are called the New Jersey tomato but they are semi - determinate. I'm not sure about starting from seed at this date because in my experience it takes a long time for tomatoes to germinate and get large enough to plant outside.

Jet Stars are good as are Better Boy. They are larger tomatoes, and so good for sandwiches.

They also will can and freeze well

No they are not:

This is probably not allowed but,,,,

Jetstar Tomato

Jet Star Tomato

Light: Full sun
Fruit size: 8 to 9 oz
Matures: 72 days

I have not heard if it either....We will both have to look into that variety. But for me it will be a search for next year---I have too much going on this year, so my gardening will have to wait for 2019.

I googled it....what a nice tomato. Here we can only grow mini's with our short season. I am trying some 'early girls' though as well.

I'm in zone 7B and Brandywine's' do very well here for me and taste pretty good too. To me the darker varieties taste better. Cherokee Purple is my favorite.

Cherokee Purple is a very nice taster , anyone onboard try the Russian Purple or Purple Russian for taste ??, Just dropped a dozen seeds in soil blocker blocks to fill up empty space in the patch . Offcourse im growing in sunny Queensland Australia which for me does well this time of the year and a bit hard come the Summer warmer months for pests and diseases ..

Junie, the Cherokee Purple rot on the vine? Once they're picked they don't last as long as other types but I don't know why they'd rot on the vine.

I don't know either, Sheri. I did hear I should have picked them before they were completely ripe ? What say you ?

The best tasting tomato I have ever eaten was a 'Paul Robeson' tomato from my garden last summer. I will always grow them in my garden!
