My mom just gave me 2 baby lilac plants that can be traced back to a plant my Great Great Great Great Grandmother first planted in the 1800"s in Michigan. I live in coastal NC! How on earth am I going to keep these alive?
TIA

Hi and welcome.

How wonderful. Are these plants that were cut from suckers in the ground and given to you bare rooted or are they small plants with soil around them?

They're small plants in pots. I'm not sure if it would be better to keep them in pots or plant them in the ground. It gets REALLY hot here in the summer and summer lasts forever. We can have multiple days of triple digit temperatures with close to 100% humidity.

when I moved I took a start of my oldest daughters lilac bush with us.

It is still in a pot (all be in much larger pot) 13 years later. I take it to my front porch (faces east) and it is there from right before the end of the last frost date in the spring..to right before the first freeze in the fall. I moved it to our garage for the winter & water sparingly. You could also treat them as house plants for a few years.

I agree with Junie...lilacs in those hot temps can be affected with borers and powdery mildew. It might be best to take them in and out with the temps. As they get to a stronger sized plant then you could try plant them in ground.

How did they fair out in your grandmother's garden?
