So far the only thing I've harvested is green peas and I eat them as soon as I pick them so there probably won't be enough to freeze :). I scramble them in my eggs, put them in my salad, eat them raw - love them.

Tonight, I planted my Cherokee Purple tomato plant---the pot is really too small for all summer, but it will do for now.

I also planted a multi-colored Lantana, a Geranium, and a New Guinea Impatiens. Then I added more soil to my long flower bed. I may get done yet.

It makes me happy to think of you eating your peas, Sheri.

Well, today we planted 54 potato pieces....Red Pontiac variety. We also prepped the new strawberry bed...we didn't plant though, we have a chance of a hard frost tonight.

So far I picked up carrot, turnip, 5 varieties of bean seeds(3 are kids mini packets..just a few seeds). I need to pick up more packets of things today. Still no rattlesnake beans to be found.

Yes Sheri, cool weather crops grow great here.

No luck with the bean seeds...so I bought green runner beans instead.

Yes, I plant yellow and purple bush beans every year.

Last night GG and I planted our new strawberry plants....only 10 but they'll spread fast.

The strawberries will definitely spread fast. I mowed mine down this year because they were full of weeds. I don't think I'll be planting anymore. We don't eat enough of them to keep up with the weeds.

I agree, Sheri. I LOVE strawberries, but the weeds took over far to easily when I planted a row back at the farm. And I tried, really I di dbut to no avail--so I just let them go. far too easy to buy some, esp with the girls gone from home.

I've heard more people say the weeds won't stay out of the strawberry patch. Wonder why it's such a problem with strawberries.

Very good question...I used to put dried grass in my garden to keep down weed. it seemed to me that when I used the dried grass as mulch & ground cover for berries, it did not seem to help/work? I have no idea why.....

weeds won't stay out of anything here lol

I use straw (chopped smaller) for my berries. I'd rather the bagged mulch but the straw is free.

The way I see it, one of your gardens would not DARE let weeds grow......... nono

The chopped up straw sounds like it would work well, with it less light can get to the soil, right???

It works well...worse part is that I have to chop the straw by hand. DH bales it but it is full length.

Planted my clematis yesterday.

I wish I could have a clematis. The back yard is so low, I do not think it would grow...I think it would drown.

Sorry that you have to do all of that chopping. but hey, if it works.......

Grow it against the house Junie, the lighter colored varieties do wonderfully in the shade.

The nursery had 'Marketmore' cuke plants on sale yesterday. I always stop in to check what the sale is for the week on my way to DD's house.

So I now have a few of those to add to my list.

Sheri, I planted 'horn of plenty' this year. This clematis is supposed to love the sun...it is planted against a rail fence. I already have two planted against the house in the shade.

I also try buy heritage seeds/plants.

I have a purple one and a white growing up a fence in full sun. I planted one that was supposed to have tiny, white blooms but it has never bloomed.

Today I planted carrot and turnip seeds. It's too cool to plant anything else.

How long has the clematis been planted?

Not very cool here Sunny. I have never planted turnips. I like them though. How do you prepare them for eating?

I've got a few pretty good sized tomatoes on the vine and finally the green beans are looking good. Hope the squash perks up. I can't imagine squash not doing well. It grows like a weed here.

It's been at least 4 years maybe 5 since I planted that clematis. I wonder if it's just shaded by the other two that get gigantic and bloom profusely.

I'd move the clematis....some won't bloom in shade.

We eat turnips here raw and also boiled with carrots. They cook together, drain and mash. I love them. This year I planted a smaller snowball variety. They grow to baseball size and are supposed to be best eaten raw.

I will. kissie

Marigolds were the sale item this week. $1 for a cellophane pack of 4. There were 3 kinds to choose from so they all needed to follow me home lol

I have to pass there to go to DD's so I figure it is a cheaper way to fill the few pots I have. I'll just stop each week and buy 3 of whatever is on sale. We can't put out our annuals for another few weeks so I'll have enough by that time grin

Sunny, do you season with salt and pepper or butter or oil for the turnips and carrots? I'm going to try that. I've liked the turnip flavor when I've tried it. Hot and humid here and you're still having frost. The way the world goes round.

I ate my tomato and boy was it good. A Cherokee purple and it was from one of the volunteer plants. Nothing better than a fresh tomato.

I need a few plants for my window boxes and an outside pot. Maybe I can find a sale like Sunny.

I use salt and pepper...I love carrots and turnips mashed together in one pot. It is my favorite veggie combo.

I planted some seeds today...full moon is in a few days. Frost will be done by then.

I have some green beans that have blooms on them. Maybe I'll actually get green beans this year. A lot of the tomato plants have green tomatoes on them and the cucumbers have blooms too. Only 1 squash plant has blooms so I'm way behind on the squash production. Not sure what's going on with the squash this year.

MY basil is doing well, as are my chives, sage & oregano. I too have green tomatoes. Here's hoping I have a ripe one by the 4th of July. (the guide I go by)

Gosh Sunny that was fast. Everything must have been exactly right at planting.

My squash plants are big now but I don't have any blooms. We're usually overrun with squash by now.

Finally have a few blooms on the squash but they're all male. Hopefully a few female blooms will show up soon.

well YAY for me--I went to a few yard sales today & found a bigger pot for one of my tomatoes. The pot I put my Cherokee Purple plant in is really too small for long term growing. It is supposed to be cooler the early part of next week, so I will transplant then.

I didn't use cages this time. I am threading them through a trellis as they grow. Lots of trouble and I broke a branch already.

Yes I do that too. and yes the branches do break sometimes.

Back at the farm, Rod took a cattle panel and made me several tomato trellises. they are heavy & 2 sided things.

IF you caught the plant early enough you could "thread" them like you say, but otherwise it worked well to tie them to the 2 sides of the trellis. BUT they do not fit so well onto a pot----They are meant to use in the ground. I do so wish I could bend over more easily, I love those things.

Yay for yard sales.

I buy patio tomatoes here...they are the only tomatoes that ripen on the vine with our short season. I get 'Tiny Tim's' when I can...no staking needed.

I lust looked them up. I will try to remember to try to find myself some for next year--those would be ever so much better than the one I bought myself for this year. I cut them up and add it to spaghetti, for a luncheon meal. You take butter, chipped garlic, cut up basil & quartered cherry tomatoes & put them in a bowl. Then you add the hot spaghetti to that and stir it up after a bit of setting. It is quit yummy IMO.

I grew a pot of tomatoes one year. They did well. Good luck Sunny. I also grew pot blueberries one year that didn't do well. I couldn't keep the mites or whatever they were off them.

I have my second red tomato. The first one I found last night..it has fallen (washed off of its stem by the rains U guess) and it is an orange...so not quite ripe---Then tonight I found one still attached, that is a red/orange with some green in it yet. I hope that it can stay on the vine until it ripens completely. Now, to just keep the squirrels away. I have a long time until the 4th of July--so it is looking like I will get a ripe tomato well before then..YAY for Carol !!
