Hello all,
It's been my long time wish to live a greener life at least once. I have decided to give it a try. I got tips to go green (http://www.gorillabins.ca/blog/8-tips-for-a-greener-lifestyle/). I know that it will be easy to say but difficult to prove, but I'll try my best. I am planning to grow few crops and fruits in my garden. It's almost winter, so I would like to know which plants can tolerate the cool climate??I'll be starting my garden works tomorrow. First I'll clean the garden, remove the weeds and then I'll start planting. It will be helpful if you suggest few winter plants that can be grown easily and healthily.

In general the lower to the ground the vegetables are, the better chance of overwintering because the snow provides protection or the plants are less exposed to cold winter winds.

I don't grow parsnips but have heard that they taste better after many frosts have made them sweeter. They take a long time to grow, at least 100 days to maturity. If you mulched them with leaves and protected them with a tarp or row cover you could harvest them all winter long so long as the ground isn"t frozen.

Spinach, kale, carrots are other choices.

Hello,

That is awesome that you are taking initiative to be greener. As a gardener myself, I must say the joy is great when you grow your own vegetables and fruits. Over the years, we have planted and grown everything from beans, pears and even cabbages and onions. I wonder how you are doing now. Hopefully, you followed through and are enjoying the rewards of your hard work! :)

Take a look at another article I came across online. I hope you like it.
