Below are 2 photos of the raised garden beds that My Oldest DD & her DH bought me for Christmas. They are smaller than I had originally thought but they will work for what I have in mind.

My question is: they are pine--
I was wondering what do I seal the wood with to help it last better???
S-I-L advises mineral oil--is there something someone likes better, and do I seal the inside area of the wood ? (there is black gardening cloth that goes between the wood and the soil)
any and all help would be appreciated. bow

Those are very pretty. Do seal all of it. And if you empty them for seasonal stuff, then scrub and reseal. It will help them last longer. Water and wood do not mix well.
As to what to seal them with, I am not sure of what is best. John liked Thompson's Water Seal. I was not a huge fan because it remains a little tacky. But I also do not have a bunch of wood rot and I have a lot of weather-exposed wood. And the tacky only lasts until it gets a fine coating of dust.

I'd use a good Spar varnish...it's for marine use, boats and such. Those are really nice thumbup

sounds good to me ladies---I was thinking of using my deck sealer for the outside & using the mineral oil for the inside,
\
I do like the idea of the varnish though--it would be easy to clean up...

over the last few weeks I sealed my raised containers & today I put them in place & filled them. Luckily I found soil with fertilizer AND water minder crystals.

I put them on our deck as I thought if I had them on my rocked area & a storm knocked them over, Cleaning out my rock would be impossible---this way if they get knocked over I can sweep the dirt off of the deck into the yard---

In the first one, so far I have planted Basil, Oregano seed and a part of my chives that I bought with me from the farm. Perhaps I will plant some sage in this one too.

in the 2nd one I have only planted some spinach seed so far.

the problem with containers is winter. Junie will you plant pansys (do they overwinter where you are) or will you leave them empty for the winter?

not much will over winter. All that lives over the winter is "some" of the basil plant That I have in one of them. Since they are up against the hose they tend to do a "bit" better than out in the open.

I just plant annual stuff in them mostly.

I'm not trying to keep stuff this winter. I'm letting my container plants fight their own battle with winter.

It is colder today and raining. I was just looking out & shuddering at my Lirope. I will not cut them back until January sometime though.
The containers are long empty.

Juniegirl, we cut it back in February. This is the first year we've cut it back twice because of all the rain, I suppose. It's very much in need of a good cutting.

I moved a peony from one place to the other today. Hope it doesn't die.

Planted a few pansys.

Well in the directions I got with it for the area it said to cut them back in late January. (sorta late winter.) So I try to do that. Really they need pulled up & divided this spring (I guess that is when I should) but I have no one to give the "extra" to.

I did not plant anything for the winter in my raised beds. I think I will plant radishes in February and maybe some lettuce. I'm going to plant carrots in my window boxes again. It takes forever for them to mature but they make a nice green top that stays pretty all summer.

Yes, I put my onions, lettuces, & radishes in these.
Later I will likely plant some short flowers also.

They are not planted yet--the above comment is just my plan.

My frost date is something like May 7th. I will plant seeds a bit before that..& plants after that.

Then I will take a photo or 2, I promise.
