Today I went out to trim off my lirope...(I have 2 and I had already trimmed one.)

Then I began to clear off the old dead leaves, and remove the weeds that are already growing new this year.

Long story short, I cleaned off the whole bed, and replanted some of the perennials that are already coming up.

One bed down 3 to go.....and then I begin planting new flowers...

I've been so swamped with coding that I still haven't done much more than picking up in the yard and checking the pool cover; there's so much that I need to get done, too...

Not to worry...There is plenty of time...Sadly it WILL wait for you.

My frost date is not until like a bit before Mother's day. I just had a chance to go out today so I did.
Truthfully that will most likely be it for a month or more....

I hope to get some dirt and pots to start my seeds and finally use my new tiny greenhouse. Haven't even check on the peas and potatoes. Maybe this weekend.

I chopped down a wisteria bush and put a new cover on the pool; at least I got something done, it's supposed to be in the 80's tomorrow...

The way I look at it is "It's another job done." Eventually if we keep at it, we will be done....Right ???

That's the truth Sunny.

It's been so windy here and it was 29° this morning and I've been at the hospital all the time so I haven't done anything. Hope you get my seeds started this week.

Today I refilled a large pot & planted 6 cutting of our SandCherry bush. I sure hope this works. And oh, I used root hormone & dampened the soil before I planted them.
here is hoping prayers

Cover that pot with plastic and you'll have better luck with those cuttings, Carol. Like making a mini greenhouse.

OK, IF I can find a plastic bag big enough...and it is outside, but hey, so are mini greenhouses.

Gardening with little ones is so much fun. GG can't wait to plant her 'Rattlesnake beans'. They make the bean package with a cartoon snake on it so it draws little gardeners right to it in the store lol

Sherri, GG planted rattlesnake beans last year for the first time, they are a mottled, long, slender bean that grow on poles. They were delicious...in fact the best beans we ever ate. They only took up a 4 ft space in the garden and we got buckets and buckets off them. I'll plant them every year now.

What I did today was :

I weeded my herb garden, & trimmed it back some (the Oregano was taking over my chives.)

I moved around the fencing to better suit the herb plot

I removed my large & half dead sage plant. I will add a new one back next week after the rains.

I planted a Sweet Basil plant in one of my planters on the deck.

I weeded some of my rocked area (although I think I will have to (by hand) take up my rocks, and then put down new landscaping paper & replace the rocks....and perhaps put down some new sand under my colored bricks that I use as edging.

I re-weeded my big flower bed a bit, then I added some new soil to it. More needs to be bought & added I am sure.

and OH..I weeded & cleaned out my big half barrel that I plant on planting a tomato into.

Good job Junie.

I marked off a new garden area to add to my existing garden....today I shall start the sod removal. It seems that my garden area melts first with the snow. thumbup

Next week I am going to put in my tomatoes & a few other veggies.
I may plant some lettuce & onions this week as well.

I want you to keep us posted on your potatoes, Sheri----unless I plant some in one of my big pots I will not be planting any of those this year.

Tonight I put out a new BLUE pot on my porch and planted most of the flowers that I bought day before yesterday.

Then I took the other Blue pot that I bought and transferred my lilac bush that I have been growing from a small start for the 10 years we have lived here. It is from a lilac bush that Valarie bought when she was in college & was homesick. The old pot was so brittle that there had to be a new one.

Another job done, as the saying goes.

I pruned our rose bushes (and one of the neighbors), picked quite a few of them, then turned the water on and hooked up the hoses and set all of the timers. The front faucet had a bad leak so I ended up in the basement for a while tightening the connections to fix the leaks. spring prep, I suppose...

DH was feeling sorry for me today, as the kids could not make it home, so he took me out & had me go shopping for some flowers.
I decided to go to Lowe's.
Well, they had tons of flowers, but not any smaller perennial's. So of course I bought a few veggie plants, and a few annuals. I planted most of them this afternoon. There are 3 left to be planted. BUT as we are supposed to have bad storms the next few days I did not plant them all. Also some of the plants that I put in pots are waiting in the garage to be put out.

I hope that everyone is having a Good Mother's Day / Sunday.

The pool is what I'm dreading; I can't seem to find a cover that fits, so there's all sorts of fun things in there right now... When I have the cash to open the pool for the season, it'll take quite a bit of chemicals to bring it back to "clean" lol.

We have a Lowes down the street, and a Home Depot up the street, we end up spending a lot of time at them both, lol.

gardening is definitely therapeutic even if it is hard work.

Today I put out squash and cucumber seeds in the straw bales and planted my teeny weeny tomato plants. I'm so behind.

IF it ever stops raining here I can re-weed my gardens and finish my planting. This reminds me of the years that Good, conscientious gardeners were mowing down their gardens because it rained so much that the weeds could not be kept at bay...

And my rocked area....Gracious me !!!

Not to mention I NEED to stain/seal my deck. BUT it has to be above 55*F for 48 hours I think it is before I can. We have not had that...yet...

Going to bed now--nite nite.

Late is definitely better than never.

Today I weeded the area under my water spigot so I can put in the 2 plants I have for there. I do not know there names. I will look in my books soon, but for right now they put me in the mind of flat hens & chicks..only tiny.

Then I weeded my large flower bed--again. I wanted it weed free so I could plant my purple Angelonia, my orange Osteospermum, & my multi colored Snapdragon plants.
Now I only need 1 more Osteospermum, & 3 short perennials. There is a nice Nursery close to where my oldest DD used to live--I think I will go there.

Then I transplanted some volunteers of my existing perennials . They were little plants so at this point I am not sure if they are Gaillardia or Echinacea. Either way they are free !!! so now whatever they are, are filling in a space I was going to need to buy a plant for. I also moved a volunteer sunflower plant. If it makes it the birds will sure be happy this summer/fall when it grows.

Then I took my "left over" 2 Celebrity tomato plants & put them in my herb garden. Not much room for them really, but at this point it was all the real-estate that I had for them.
evening update:
I had been in but then a while later, I went back out and re-watered my newly planted plants. Then as the wind had died down, I used a bunch of round up. Now to wait until it begins to work. Then I will do some more weeding.

I hope it does rain tonight as they predict. That would water in my newly planted plants.

You got a lot done, good job.

I have perennials to divide also...especially my daylilly's. My Aunt needs a few extra plants for her front yard so I'll drop off a few to help. She is a wonderful aunt and could use a helping hand.

My Aunt had many plants....and sadly found out that her toddler grandson has a bee allergy. So they had to strip over half of everything out of her yard. I am helping her replenish what doesn't draw in the bees.

I finished all my outdoor raking and trimmed back all the plants and shrubs that needed it.

Sunny hope that toddler has an epi pen handy.

junie, you've accomplished a bunch.

It's been raining here so I'm not sure how my late garden is coming along. Hope to be able to check tomorrow.

Well so far so good. We dug a trench to plant them and I've covered the plants 3 or 4 times and they're over a foot high again already. If that's any indication of how many potatoes we're going to have then we'll have a lot.

So true.

Today I added a few bags of compost to my garden...I wish we could compost here. It is hard to amend soil a few bags at a time per year.

Has anyone every used row covers? I'm thinking of putting some over the squash. May be too late though because doesn't the squash borer get in there early?

I hope the squash bugs go to someone elses house, Sheri..

I potted some begonias today, for the front porch.

I moved my angelonia over about 1 foot, so I could transplant my green envy coneflower close to where I had it.
I had lots of volunteer green envies up against the house that I wanted to move.

Then I planted the plants I bought today when Rod & I went to Lowes. I bought an annual Coreopsis Corey the picture is yellow but these in the pot are tiny pink. we shall see.

then I planted some pale pink/pale yellow tiny zinnia. They are the ones that have like 4-6 petals...

also I planted a Mandarin Double Orange Coneflower. and a Maroon Blanket flower (Gaillardia).

I think my flower bed is done--that is if my seeds do ok--some are up & ok but some are bare. I guess it rained too heavily at the wrong time, HUH?? The nasturtium are doing well though.

The bugs and eggs are there today. The plants haven't had the first flowers and they've already found them. At this point I'm not sure if I should pull up the plants and start over or just pull them up and give up. This is the earliest the bugs have ever shown up.

Sounds like your flower bed will be beautiful.

I've already planted my window boxes twice and the sun is so intense nothing will live. Even the lantana died. Not sure what to plant next. Maybe some type of small cactus but I really don't like cactus.

None of my peonies bloomed this year. Didn't even have buds. They've all bloomed from the beginning. I think we had a really cold snap for a few days after it had been warm for a while and that did them in. Shoot.

I have never put marigolds in the window boxes because I don't much like them but it's a thought.

I pulled up one squash plant and stuck in another seed. I picked off and murdered clap several adult squash bugs today and removed some eggs. Maybe if I keep this up I'll get squash before the plants are totally gone.

Woke up at 6 so I went to the garden. Didn't see squash bugs but maybe they were still asleep. The Japanese Beetles were awake though. Yuck. Picked a few green peas (may be the last) and dug up some potatoes.

YAY for you....I am betting the rain didn't know that, or it would have "come to help" lol

I watered a LOT and weeded a bit.

I eat the green peas raw or throw them in the pan when I cook me an egg. I've already lost 2 squash plants. They just withered up. There was no sign of the squash vine borer or squash bugs so I've got no idea unless it was just the brutal 101° sun. I've never had that happen.

I know that the below comment is a spring job, but hey, better late than never, right ??

I just finished laying down my Pea Gravel and my Mulch for the year.....I had just bought 1 2 cu ft of Mulch a month or more ago & when I was done I was way short. I finally found more (it was late in the season after all) a bit back & as today was still a nice day I used it--and well I am done for this year, - with that anyway. I have cleaned around & built up most of my brick edging but one long strip needs to be done yet. I may go back out again this afternoon when I am cooled off or I may wait until this evening. we shall see. Good news is all of my flower beds are weeded...

LOL he does not usually help me at all with MY yard work....as I will not cut grass & such. But he had offered to help me last Sunday before his friend called to ask him to go with him So I am thinking, if I ask him to help me next weekend, he cannot really say no. At least that is how I hope he feels about it. If he is willing to help me that will be great...I can accomplish what I want to much faster then. "here's hoping!"

Sounds like you're getting things accomplished Junie. Johnny doesn't help with in the yard either. Well, maybe once in a while but not a lot.

Sheri: here are current photos of my "Rocked Area" in the back yard.

As you can see I have weeds grown up no matter what I do---the brown looking weeds in the one photo is "Golden Chain".. that I am trying to get rid of---I love it there but weeds were invading it and I could not keep them out, so all of it is going to go. back up against the house in the mulched area are spiders wort that has spread that I cannot kill (But I keep trying) and "Dandelions" that not even salt can kill---but I will not give up on them either.

I am going back to roundup...

Thanks, Sheri. The "Picnic area" is exactly that these days but it began as the floor/ground for our 2 dog pens. a 4 ft tall one for our dog when we were not at home & a 6 ft tall one for when our "grandpuppies were visiting....

the "edging bricks" go as follows: Red yellow green white gray (I think) then the colors begin again...

The rain and wind may end my garden for the year. Or maybe it will help the squash seedlings that have popped up. Won't know until Irma bids us farewell.

Our growing season is usually over in August because the end of July is so scorching hot but we had a few cold snaps and rain this year. It's been nice. I put out carrot seeds yesterday.

Plants N Pots sent me radish seeds..and they are doing well. It was hot for a few days so I am looking forward to some cooler days so my radishes will grow to maturity. I am still getting a very few cherry tomatoes.

We haven't had rain since Irma came through so I watered my little squash plants. They have blooms but I'll probably have to hand pollinate.

I've cleaned everything up. I'm not planting a winter garden. We just don't eat enough of the stuff to do all the work.

I cut the lirope in February. Grows like a week around here.

I'm thinking about the garden for the next season. I hope to put in another raised bed and I'm definitely not planting green beans. I don't know what's happened around here but for the last 3 years I don't even get enough to can. I used to get enough to can for everyone. Oh well. I'm thinking of planting limas for a change.

Green beans won't set if the temps are too hot, Sheri. Has it been hotter and drier the past years?

Sunny, I've had a garden off and on for more than 30 years, wet, dry, hot, cold, and until the last 3 or 4 years haven't had a problem with green beans. Years ago we never even fertilized the soil or amended it in any way and they grew just fine. Last year I did try amending a little bit in hopes of improving things but like I said I barely got enough to eat. I've changed where I get my seeds, gone to a non GMO site, wondering if that's it.

I love limas too and someone told me what type to plant and I've already forgotten and can't even remember who told me. Lordy.

I'm wondering if you got bad seeds. I'd try a few of a different brand/supplier. Bush/pole beans are a must for my garden.

I order my seeds from Patriot Supply and it's been the last 3 years and last year I even replanted once. One year I blamed it on the chickens next door eating off the flowers and that was definitely part of the problem but not this past year.

I received two garden catalogs in the mail yesterday...I never order from them...too $$$... but it is fun to look at.

I'd try a pack of seeds from the local store Sheri.

I will only weed my flower bed and also my rocked area in the back this spring. I may or may not add some flowers to the flower bed. Nothing extra will be done until I get moved.

I've had to call Patriot Supply about my seed order twice and still don't have it. It's going to be too late to plant my green peas. I'm going to see if I can find seeds at the store and I guess I'll cancel my order with them.

if you can manage to get by w/o the order from them to cancel it might be just what they need to teach them that people expect their orders when promised.

I called and had to leave a message about cancelling the order. I received an email saying they cancelled the order and the reason for the delay is that the peas and limas are on backorder. Should let a person know what's going on. I hope I can find some green pea seeds soon or it will be too late to plant them.

dodge seems like we used to send seeds back and forth back in the day but it did take forever. Remember Penny? I can't think of her forum name but I'm pretty sure she sent me seeds a time or two. Times have changed.

No, the straw is baled from our wheat field so it is clean....we just cover the strawberry plants with it. Tomato plants do not grow well either so we plant cherry tomatoes...I just stake them with sticks and string. Our growing season is a challenge..but potatoes grow wonderfully.

It takes A LOT of hand weeding to keep them clean....and I even used a few bags of bagged soil over my topsoil.

I get oodles of grass in my bets an it is not fun.. Rain sure helps the grass grow. Makes for a bad day out there.. I got my zero turn lawn mower stuck in the mud. Yes mud. It rained all week. One day it was 2.5 inches. Now they say we will have a short summer.. OH what great luck.. Will the veggies ever mature?

oh my, Sunny, does your husband know what a lucky man he is ?????

I just spent an hour out in my large flowerbed weeding and removing all of the dead leaves from the fall.

This evening I will go back out and move a few volunteer Echinacea to fill in where I usually put out annuals.
I am going to try not to spend so much on plants this year, only to have the new owners pull them all up and either remove the flower bed, or put in what they like instead.

I guess once a person gets going......

I went back out, transplanted starts of 4 of my perennials...and then I weeded the flowers up against the house and filled the goldfinch feeders.

ah, it felt good !!

Good going.

I split a daylily today.....they tend to bloom poorly when overgrown. It had been there for about ten years.

No Sheri, we have to plant them deep so that they only poke through around the third week of June. Frost hits til then.

moelena where are you located if you don't mind saying. Seems your planting seasons are very different than mine since I'm hoping to start harvesting in a few weeks. It's fun to read about someone planting or harvesting when mine is finished.

I cleaned out my front flower bed, and found a LOT of dead leaves--which HAD to be from the houses across the road. I only have 2 itty-bitty trees in front. I would not care bur half of my wild violets are chocked out..and they were from "the farm" I am taking several of those plants with me to Missouri, along with my chives from the farm. hope they grow there. I guess tomorrow I will have to buy some annuals to fill in for curb appeal..

Yay for taking those 'memories' with you. Will you plant your lilac at the new house?
