We have a 7' (approx.) tree in our yard that just bloomed. From my limited online research, I think it's a kuosa dogwood. However, we have a dogwood festival locally for the flowering dogwoods, and everyone thinks they are an expert! A bunch of people are adamant that this is not a dogwood, based on its pointy petals and late bloom. What do you guys think? Am I right? Or is this something else?

Yep, a Chinese dogwood, cornus kousa. You are correct. They do bloom later then the regular dogwoods. It is very pretty.

Thanks, I think it's a beautiful tree too! We have two taller dogwoods in our front yard that fit more the standard flowering dogwood of this area, the kind the festival is held for. I just didn't think to take a picture of them before all their flowers dropped. These were unexpected!

The Kuosa Dogwood is a really beautiful tree; we have all sorts of dogwoods all over the Pacific Northwest; in fact, Portland is known as the Dogwood City of the West (as well as the city of roses; we have a huge rose test garden here).

Dodge, is it getting enough sun? I know dogwoods will grow perfectly fine in the shade, but won't really produce blooms unless it has plenty of sun exposure. I've heard that growing from a seed versus a graft or cutting can sometimes result in very lackluster blooms.

Awesome, dodge! Mine seemed to just bloom overnight too. Quite a surprise for me, considering I had no clue what it was before that!

Thank you Carol... blush
I got to thinking today, well last spring all the apple trees froze.. And that may be what happened to the Dogwood?? Do those blossoms freeze?

Well I do not really know & like I say I cannot go exploring & then come back & copy/paste what I find. However it makes sense if one can freeze out the other can, right ?

I am glad that your tree is looking good this year.

I LOVE the pink ones, and wish I had one. The ground is such here that few trees ever grow. so I think my DH is done buys trees for this house. Luckily the soft maple trees do well, so I have a few trees in the yard.

Isnt that awesome?
I read on here pink an red are hardy in our zones.

Must be if they are sold here.
Be pretty to own one of each.. Sons wife said it took real long for hers to bloom also. I think mine was 4 years.

I like the white ones best. They make such a good show and look so fresh first thing in the spring.
