What did you do today In YOur garden ..Tells us.
April 16, I cant do a thing out there in the garden today.
Weather is too cold yet.
But I did give my SUV a bath.
Messed up the cell phone . I was speaking Spanish not English.
I had to go to Verizon to get it back to English.........free. He said sometime they do that.
The cells.

I have cleaned out the flower beds. Planted a Mock Orange bush, and got some new white Lilys for the bed planted outside, an some Elepahnt ear bulbs I planted. Hardy ones.

Inside I have many seedlings. TOmatoes, an all sorts of flowers.
Zinnias , marigolds, assylums, daisys, an many more.
Its easier on the wallet that way........I started them all from seeds, from friendly seedy persons.
My geranium I wintered over , has one pretty bloom.
2 inside begonias are in bloom.
Easter cactus is full of buds.
Ok is this enough for one day??
LOL

Lucky you....I have been just shoveling snow onto the few bare patches I have to help it melt faster lol

I have been 'cold readying' some apple seeds that need to be planted soon and I will start some seeds this week coming for transplanting.

It has poured rain for over a week here so I've only been able to a tiny bit in the yard. I do have tomatoes planted in the pretend greenhouse and the squash bales ready for whenever I get the squash seeds planted and ready to transplant. I've put out all my flower seeds and have planted the shamrock bulbs you sent me, dodge. That's about it.

we had a lot of rain here this weekend...Sad part about that is that my back yard is so low that even if it just rains a bit I cannot get into my yard to clean & garden. As it is now, there re a LOT of water puddles in my back yard. rolz

I do have some raised pots to garden in a bit, so I will begin there this week. Then if/when it stops raining so much hopefully I can get to my flower beds to clean them up for spring & summer & then plant the rest of my veggie garden & put the annuals in my flower beds.

I'm jealous.

I did take apart a large wooden crate yesterday(it is what our snow blower was shipped in) to use the pieces later to make a raised bed for grandgirl. Free lumber is always a great deal.

I hung out the laundry then visited with sis in town.
Sprinkled all afternoon an evening it was a tornado watch till 10:00
I pretty much stayed inside an transplanted seedlings for further exposure outside on the porch when weather permits.
Tomatoes are going nuts so far..
One more month an out they go.
I am loving it.

I was going to stain the neighbors fence (the side that faces my house), but evidently the good weather of the last few days decided to subside for today (though it's Oregon and we're well used to that around these parts).

When they built the fence, several years ago, they asked us not to stain it as they where going to do it and didn't want my stain to bleed through; but after two years and with the neighbor's family getting ready to sell their house, I'll let the new home owners not be the ones comfortable with my stain choice as the fence looks like crap at this point...

STRANGE you should mention that about Oregon.
I was talking to a lady who bought a place in Oregan, she is from Houston. She said it rains an awful lot there.
So I know what you mean.
Sometimes neighbors are strange in boundaries.
My land borders one who is a stay inside person an she wont do a think about the boundrys .
An the other neighbor dumps her trash from the yard, into that spot.
Or she throws limbs an trash into the twp ditch an then calls them to clean it out.
What a yo yo.

I'd put the trash back in her yard...mind you I'm the kind of person who brought back a bucket of dog doo to the neighbor's it belonged to. lol

I think painting the fence before the newbies move in is a great idea Gremelin.

I did that to her late husband....He tossed tomatos into my drive.. When he left for the day, I tossed them back in his yard.........Last time he did that.

Well the trash his wife is doing, isn't on my land she is putting it on the next door neighbors land..........(Which ends at the end of my drive........I cant say a thing of that, not mine. However she doesn't get along with that lady, she got booted out of her house. She was coming in everyday........The twp does know cause I told them about it.. She is always complaining to them an they just play her game.......... Very saintly of her.

Well, a state this green needs lots of watering ;)... The whole Pacific NW is pretty much like this.

Yeah, three of my neighbors (left, right, and back right) decided that the property line is a sugguestion... The one to the left put up a temporary fence on my side of the yard around my plants that are a foot on my side of the property line. The one to the right put up the new fence, and it's on my side of the line by at least half a foot (I have a play structure up and the kids now cannot climb up the stairs to get to the monkey bars), but the guy in the white house behind me moved the fence a foot closer to his property because his line isn't straight and he wanted a straight fence.

Ditto on putting stuff back in her yard; it's not your responsibility to clean others messes...

Thanks, I bought a super thick/solid stain, it should make the fence pretty without it bleeding through too much, and since the fence now looks like crap it's not like a non-solid would work too well to make it look good as it's just semi greyed boards.

Ya know, James, I think if it were me, I would first make doubly sure of my boundaries & then notify the neighbors (in writing) that they had "mistakenly" put their fences on your property. Then tell them that either they can move the fences or you will be happy do it for them.

As for me, I just finished planting some onions, spinach & mesclun mix. My yard is so low that I have to resort to planters & hug pots...But I am ok with that. By the time we are past my frost date, I will be able to plant my tomato plants & such.

I haven't really done much outside this year yet; I have one of those steel frame pools to put up at some point, but we did clean off the concrete patio a couple of weeks ago and put up the new gazebo (the last one was destroyed by an early wind storm in October).

Thanks; it's a lot better than the hill that was there before, lol... The steep hill on the street over is what I tell people to reference when they see the yard; it's so much better being functional, lol.

Our neighbor on the right graveled part of our land as his driveway. He mows a wide stripe down the side of it which is on our land too. So far it hasn't been a problem.

if I were you, I would go and talk to the people...just an FYI sorta conversation.

Sounds to me as if they think that piece of land is theirs. That could be a problem down the road if they do not know the boundaries.

What I didn't do .........in the garden today.

Went to bath an the tub kept draining the water. Took out the plunger an lever an try to figure it out.. No dice

So I got online to see what was involved in putting in a new lever an plunger.. Sure enough utube showed me.
I went to Home depot an got a package , came home an installed it .. Didn't work.
After 3 trys I called son to come by.. he said later today after a party. ok
Went back up an got a rubber hose from the shower an put it down the hole where the plunger went. Blew thru it several times a seen some like styro foam come to the drain.
Then I put the old one back on, an presto it worked.
Called son an said I don't need you........He was glad, said I was my own plumber today. angdev LOL

Eek what next? Your never see all these problems unless your a widow. yikes

Junie, Johnny has talked to the neighbors and we have the paperwork to prove it but they haven't redone their driveway and it's not close to our yard so it's not a problem so far.

Good for you dodge. Self sufficient. I am not good at fixing stuff.

Too wet to do anything in the garden.

That is good to know, Sheri. I am glad to hear it.

It is too wet here as well, and it is too low as I have said. BUT today I went out & pulled some volunteer miniature butterfly bushes out of the area & weeded some. Yes it was sad, but I had nowhere to replant the volunteers

This evening, I cleaned out & cleaned off my big flower bed. I was out there 2 hours. It had been taken over by this spring weed. Rod says that it will be gone by summer. I have never heard of such as that, but hey...time will tell I guess. Whatever it is, a lot of the roots stay in the dirt when you pull this stuff out. I was NOT a happy camper. Rodney came out of the garage 2 different times to check on me. The second time is when he said that it would be gone by summer.

Next up to clean off is my garden...It had better not have that weed in it.. tapfoot

Rod just called it a spring weed. I am sure it has a name...I just do not know what it is nor do I have the inclination to look it up. Yes, I use round-up. But since I have ripped out all of the weeds, I do not think that round-up will help me by being on the roots.

I do intend to use it in my rocked area.

Really there my rocks need to be taken up, new landscaping paper needs to be put down & my rocks re added. That will not happen. Thing is there never was any grass or weeds under this area. when they built the house they just threw the clay from the basement next to the house like they do. One would like to think that I would not have this problem. But I sure do. So the round-up will get used there.

Since he is so sure that they will not be a problem in my flower bed, I am just going to add more dirt there & then see what grows thru. if something does, I will pull it as it comes up.

Good morning,

Do the folks in your area get a man to spray you yards for dandelines? They were doing the neighbors yesterday . I don't do it.
Fields are full of it an it comes back again...........

I mowed yesterday an need to get the spray out an get some nastys killed......Everyone is having a battler with their forsythia bushes here.. It blooms on the ends only an the middle is all brown?????????? Everywhere here.. I was working mine over yesterday, an fined some of the aged stems are rotted .. So I am doing replants.......

Good morning.
There is really no point in my going to bed.

no we do not, have such men that I know of anyway. I guess I could hire a landscaper. (not gonna happen)

I told Rod if he sprayed for weeds he would have no grass in his yard.
he counters with he could get some broadleaf weed killer..
he missed my point--there is so much of that weed, clover and dandelions that there is not much grass at all. We used to have a beautiful yard. Then Rod decided to stop fertilizing the grass. since then, it has gone down hill fast.

I was thinking, I guess you are going to have to make replants. can you cut the ends off & replant them, or maybe just trim back the bush & see if it comes back out ???

I really know nothing of forsythia.

You are a good friend dodge.

Junie, forsythia is easy to grow and beautifully yellow in the spring. Love it.

All I did today was water the seedlings.

I did not do much either. I weeded my rocked area a bit, watered my onions, spinach & lettuces. Then I planted a few annuals in the front of the house. And, OH ! I swept the front porch & the apron of the garage of grass, after Rod mowed.

5-3-15

Here is what I did today:

I got 6 bags (.75 Cu. ft.) of topsoil & added them to my flower bed and covered most of it with that.
I need about 4 to 6 more.

Then I have 2 bags of 2 cu. ft. of black mulch. It goes into the beds up against the back of the house. I will have too much of that but 1 bag is not enough. rolz BUT weeding needs to be finished first.

The flower bed I added the soil to is ready to plant my annuals into. I have one of the 2 beds against the house weeded.
Well mostly weeded. I want to get rid of my spiderwort in that bed as it is taking over the entire area.
DH says to use Round-up, so it is still there.

I also put my plants/flowers into the pot on the front porch and in a few other pots. Really I was very pleased with what I accomplished today.

I say if it needed done & you got it done (late or not) then you have every right to be proud of yourself. besides, didn't you figure out how to start & run the tiller ?? I know I could not do so.

Lordy, I miss my daddy, but esp. at garden time. he would load his big tiller & bring it over to my house & till my garden for me.

technically I could wait to plant until after next weekend. which may happen yet, as I need to weed & hand till my small veggie garden bed.

I'd love to own a tiller..someday.

Yesterday I hand dug some sod, I am expanding my foundation flower beds..then raked what bare ground we have. My snow has really taken a beating.

I have no idea where my dad's tiller is. BUT it was a much bigger one that I would need now anyway. Dad did give Rod a small tiller. It would have been perfect for me. BUT "Rod" did not need it, so he gave it to my daughter. "SHE" said it leaked oil or gas or something & she got rid of it. She is a female version of her daddy, so it could have well not been leaking at all. Either way it is gone now. And if I bought one, it would be gone before I knew it----after all HE would not need it.

Yes, I DID get a new car. Which surprised me.

however, just to be clear, he is not hateful. He (& Emily) just do NOT like to keep things...they worry about each day as it comes. IF you do not need an item on Monday, get rid of it..(to reduce the clutter).....never mind about needing it in the future..... why

me, I like to keep things so I do not need to re-buy them.

Strange also.........
However if they have the money to do it , so be it.
I am like you , If I can use it, don't loose.
Seasons change do they throw out the winter clothes too? Or summer in fall/
Price way to go

NO they usually keep clothes..and stuff they like.

BUT to give you an example.
My SIL had a lot of T-Shirts he got while Active in the Navy. Many had ships names on them & could only be bought while assigned to and part of the crew of a certain ship.

While he was stationed over-seas for a year, she brought me the T-Shirts & asked me make a quilt out of them. I did not want to mess up his T-Shirts, so I hired out the work to make the quilt. IT turned out beautiful, but he was NOT happy....

See, SHE wanted rid of the T-shirts...apparently she thought he had too many.. rolz

And FYI: She has the money to act like that--us, not so much.

Well, she asked me to make it, so I figured if I didn't make it, I needed to pay for it.
Yes, when I gave it to her she was all happy with it. She gave it to her DH when he came home and while he liked the quilt, he did not appreciate the T-shirts being gone.
Yes, they still have it. I saw it last week.

Yea, I gotta dig my garden out...it really got bad over winter this year. I guess the snow drug grass seed all over where it was not supposed to be. why And this really needs to be done so I still have time to go buy plants.

Tonight I merely watered plants. In and out of pots

I let them pick daffodils for mom an they were elated.
Now I made some potted tomatoes an flowers for them to take home when the weather is good for that.
They bought me a plant an hummer an butterfly for outdoors for moms day.
I took them to Moms day breakfast an all 5 of us got a potted plant from church. Oh were they ever happy.Smiled the whole time.
It was only $1. to eat.LOL

No I don't spray. I just have a tiny bed and this is the 3rd time I've picked and there's plenty more. We've had a lot of rain so I think that's the secret.

I replanted runners last year so I should get a bumper crop of strawberries this year. They do quite well here.

I'll try post a pic if I can Sheri.

Yesterday I hand tilled my whole garden...I really need to buy a tiller. My arms are aching today.

Not really sure what the problem is with their service; could you explain what the problem is?

The forum software, for security, requires that all external images end in an image extension (jpg, gif, png, etc), so if the issue is that you can't just post a link from yahoo then that could be it.

I know the other week you tried to post an image from mail.yahoo.com which looked like it would have been an image that was from an email; that host is a closed source, so if you're not logged into the account that has permission to view the message then no one can see it.

I finished cleaning out the two raised bed and found volunteer tomato plants and one of them already has blooms. Way cool.

Also found a bunch of ants in one of the beds. How can I get rid of them?

Neither salt or vinegar is very good for plants. Diatomaceous earth is not harmful to plants but very harmful to ants. Boric acid is also not too bad.

I happen to put acid into my acid loving plants.. Recipe is a tablespoon of vinegar to a gallon of water.Cheaper than commercial mixes an same results.
So vinegar ISN"T harmful.

I disagree with Tina

I think Tina meant that vinegar is harmful to regular plants....not acid loving ones.

Today I will tackle my much needed siding washing.

Vinegar is an excellent, safe solution for dealing with weeds in the yard and garden. It's not harmful to children or pets, and it's inexpensive enough to always have around. In addition to weed killing, vinegar can be a gardener's best friend because it helps kill slugs, can get rid of ants, neutralizes garden lime, cleans garden pots, and much more. Vinegar is excellent for acid-loving plants like gardenias, azaleas and hydrangeas but it also kills weeds when used at full strength so you need to be careful how you use it on plants you want to keep alive.

I have long advocated for vinegar used as a weed and pest deterrent. I was warning Sheri that vinegar (and salt) is not the right answer to ants in her raised planters. For ants and other creepy things, I use diatomaceous earth.
Food grade diatomaceous earth (DE) is actually good for other critters. It won't harm your plants at all, either. It can be found at feed stores because it is used a lot for chickens. I use it all round my house to keep out bugs of all kinds. And in my gardens for bug, slug and snail control. No worries if the wild birds or pets get into it.

Yesterday I got the siding washed, my flower beds mulched and my veggie garden got a few bags of super soil added to help lighten the soil.

I'll open another topic....
