A new coffee house to start a new day. The weather models are saying all of you folks are going to be slammed with some mighty cold weather next week. Batten down the hatches and get some extra milk and bread in. Mostly keep warm and safe.

Good morning. I will head back to bed before I am actually up for the day.
I did not mean milk and bread literally, unless you actually need it. I meant anything you needed to hunker down and keep you able to stay off off icy roads, Carol. I hope for the best and prepare for the worst.

Yes, I understood what you were getting at Tina. I usually have extra bread & meat in my freezer. But things such as butter, L-meat, milk & Eggs I will have to check on.

Have I mentioned how I hate winter.....every winter since I have had children, I have asked myself why it is I live in the Mid-west.

Up early for the day. I have been up since well before 6 am. rolz

I have been up since 3:30 and will not go back to sleep now.
I live in SoCal desert and I am not fond of winter either. But I know that if I lived in snow country, I would be looking for a warmer climate.

Good morning...well you get the point lol It is storming here, again. Yes Junie, I wonder why I live where I am also. It seems though no matter where one lives there are weather issues to deal with.

I had to take grandgirl to the hospital yesterday, they gave her a steroid treatment and antibiotics. She was up sick all night again. I might have slept 6 hrs in total in the past 5 days.

Tina, I have been Winter prepping lately as well with supplies and such. It makes me wonder why every year people do not prepare themselves here.

Sounds as if a good nights sleep would help you all. I hope the treatments help your Granddaughter, and help her soon. You are going to get sick next from being run down. WE don't want that for sure.

Leaving to take advantage if a great sale here in a bit. I am going to get a Christmas gift or 2.

I do think we stay where we are because that is where our families are. That is not a bad thing, just uncomfortable sometimes. I am glad you are ready, Sunny.
I hope your grandbaby gets rid of her sick quickly now. And I hope you get some rest. Keep safe.

I think we stay for family too... we had intended to move to Az again when Joe retired, but kids are all here now- they all followed us here .. so we are here too .. bad winters and all...

Sunny sure hope your grandbaby gets better soon, and you get some rest too... and it's always good to be prepared for nasty weather or whatever life brings us as much as we can be... we shopped for extra stuff this time because they said we are due for a change this coming week... hubby will bring in some wood to the garage for just in case we lose power...

I too woke up extra early today- think the time change gets to us more than we realize... couple that with weather changing and sets us up for sickness ... I am really hoping the boys haven't shared their cold with me... so far so good...

Well I am heading to Carrie's to stay with Derek while Joe and Carrie take Nicoli for his neuro appt... he is just getting a checkup...

Have a good day all!

Nana

Keep safe this week, Nana. It doesn't look good for any part of the country beyond the west coast.
Ted and I have a long weekend. He goes back to school on Wednesday. I have plans around the house for that time.

On the News/Weather tonight they said that the weekend & Monday were going to be good yet here. But Tuesday & onward until at least the 23rd would be well below normal temp wise...BRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

Rod wanted to go see the boys tonight. We were talking about Beowulf & Both Emily & Chris said how they wanted to send Luke on a vacation to our house. About 30 minutes later he goes into the closet, drags out his extra car seat & looks out the window to see if our car is still there & wants me to help him take the car seat out of the box so it could be put in our car b/c he was going on a vacation with us. Those 2 have got to stop talking about such things, That little boy is so smart he understands a LOT.

I think it has been arranged that Luke is going to come & spend the night with us next Friday night.

Thanks Tina. But I think the little guy think that a "vacation" to Grandma's house is something fun, not him spending the night. We may have to make some healthy cookies, or something.

Good morning. I think Ted and I will go out and collect pine cones today. Some for my barrel and some to take to school. The barrel is basically kindling for my wood stove. Teddy's class crafts with the others. I have to straighten my front porch as well and put things away.

The temps were lovely today. But the winds were high enough to bring down pinecones and not pleasant to be a target. My pinecones are a little larger than fist sized but they hurt when they peg you. So we will try again tomorrow. We had plenty to do today. I worked on my front porch for awhile and did up some laundry. I got a couple of trash bags down to the dumpster.

It must have been so cute to see Luke get the carseat lol

Your pinecones must make lovely crafts Tina.

I am sorry about the power situation, Sunny. Does the heavy snow mess with the wires?
Ted and I take pine cones in every year. They make turkeys out of them and maybe little snow covered 'trees' and things. They are easy to manipulate with clumsy fingers.

Yes it was so very cute to see Luke get his car seat. It made me feel bad but it was so cute.

Sorry that you had no power, Sunny. Do you have blowers for the wood burner ?? (just me thinking of the no heat in the house.)

Tina, I hope you are able to get the pinecones pick up tomorrow. Sorry for the wind.

Going to bed soon. nite-nite.

Yes when we had he wood burner, we had a blower that ran on electricity as well. There were real problems when the power went out, as there was no way to remove the heat from the hot water in the back of the wood burner.

I am now headed to bed early... wavy

Ah, my blower wood burner is sitting in storage. I bought it for a backup if one of the two indoors has an problem and I need to switch them out. But I don't really want to use it. It does not have a flat top for cooking. I love that I can cook on my stoves. I love having lots of alternatives.
Sweet dreams, Carol.

Our woodstove is in the center of the main wall in line with the hall so no blower is needed. Having the power go out doesn't affect our heating or cooking. I cook right on the stove top.

That sounds great, Sunny.

Valarie & Henry have left for home now. Poor Henry was watching me on the ride back from the restaurant, trying his best to stay awake. He finally could not fight it any more & he fell asleep. When he wakes up again, he will be at his Aunt & Uncles. It seems his Aunt is having a dinner party for her DH.

It is FAR to quiet in my house just now.

I bet you miss that baby, Carol. I hope they visit you again soon.
Good to hear from you, Sunny.
I have two wood stoves on each side of the house. One can fit a single pot on it. The other has room for 4 pots. Two in the back on a keep-warm mode and two in the front for cooking. I keep a big stockpot on that one full of water. I can take it into the bathroom and set it on the counter to warm that room before popping Teddy into the bath. The rest of the time my stove is loaded with kettles of water to add moisture to the air.
The power does not affect my kitchen stove top that uses propane. But my propane oven won't run without power. I will not buy that kind again.
I also have a fireplace. It is not an efficient way to heat and will actually suck warmth from the wood stoves out of the house. The ambiance is nice though.
Now, that all said, I have not yet lit my stoves this year. It has not been cold enough. I did use a radiator-looking electric space heater in Teddy's room on a couple of chilly nights. And I baked a couple of things in my oven to eat and help with the fall chill. But we are in a pretty warm mode right now.

We have a gas fireplace but it will work w/o electric.

Tina if you EVER find a propane stove that has an oven that works w/o electricity DO let me know. I have not found one yet.

Will do, Carol. I will research it one of these days. I know they are available.
I have a second propane stove/oven combo up in the treehouse. It works fine without power. Doesn't even have a plug at all. You just need to light it. I have it on a 5 Gal propane tank but that is turned off. So I am not without options.
I love options. Besides my 285 gallon tank for the house, I have 5/5 Gal propane tanks altogether. Also a couple of camp stoves. Cajun cookers. Those are similar to the deep fryers for turkeys that are sold this time of year. But mine were welded for us specifically. I have the iron big dutch ovens to cook over them too. We used to put on some wicked fish fries.
I also keep a mess of 1 lb propane bottles to use with my lanterns. A bunch of spare mantles for those. I have chafing dishes and cases of fuel for those. I believe in being prepared because I live in earthquake country. John was like minded so we got on well. I believe everyone should be prepared for what life has to throw at us.

only one propane bottle in this house. it is one of those small ones for a outdoor grill.

The furnace, fireplace & cook stove are propane but piped in I guess you would call it "city gas" not bottled.

I have several iron Dutch-ovens as well. and different sized iron skillets. I prefer them.

Thanks Tina

Yes, those are what my small propane bottles are like, ones for grills. It is funny, the only grills I have are charcoal or wood burning. I was thinking you had an all electric house.

Hi Cheryl. Do come back & chat when you can stay longer. It was nice to see you.

No, I have an all gas house. (well I have no idea what the water heater is, but the cook stove & the house furnace & the dryer are gas....well again I assume the clothes dryer is gas. Perhaps it is not. I just bought the thing I really have no idea what it is.

Out at the farm we had a huge gas "pig" tank. But when Rod built the wood burning stove we only out about $100.00 worth of gas in it once a year. before the wood burning stove (one brand name is a Taylor) we filled the tank up about once every 6 weeks. It cost a fortune. We had a gas stove, furnace but once again I have no idea what kind of water heater or dryer I had.

Here you can't get 'gas hook ups' for your house. Our propane comes in prefilled containers that you just pay and trade in. There is no place locally to get propane or have it delivered.

A lot of people have taken out their woodstoves and put in furnaces(having a woodstove as a main heat source cancels your house insurance here). Then when the power goes out they have no heat because the furnace needs electricity to run the fans.
