Was wondering if your Christmas cactus is in bud? Mine are all over the place.
Hope yours happens.

Very strange.

Mine blooms 2 times a year.

Even my Orchid cactus did.. I purchased a spring cactus, but it isn't in bloom right now.

You know, Dodge I am confused too.
The only thing I can come up with is possibly cactus need to be root bound in order to bloom. ??
Mine all have plenty of room yet in their pots. I do not put them out in summer as I lost 3 that I tried that with. BUT they are not "really" in bright or direct light either. why

Yes I bet it does make a difference (the garden soil) My soil at the farm was wonderful...This stuff I have here does not even support trees very well. It used to be a field. I have no idea how the farmer ever got any decent crops from it.

I DID just have a thought. I bet it is the temperature change. The one year I put mine in the basement for a few months, I did get 2 blooms from one of them. I do not want to do that again b/c there are just 2 small windows in the basement, and so not enough light..

I don't fertilize mine either. It's healthy looking but I was hoping it would fill out a little. I had moved it to a room where it didn't get a lot of light. I've moved it back downstairs now. I hardly ever water it.

Gotcha Bill, I read it all an it sound lots like what I was throwing at carl.
I put mine on the porch in the spring an it sets there all summer an fall, till now. Bring it inside an in about a week it has buds....
rose perhaps the inside makes less light an triggers it to bloom? Good advice.

Thanks for helping us.

Allow the to get completely dry .. don't water often like other plants.. They do prefer dry to wet.

Ok I will do that. But I did notice that when I do that they tend to wilt. Does perhaps the soil need to be changed ?
About how often do you water your cactus ? I promise I will only use this as a guide. I know that there are a lot of variables to be considered.

I have two Christmas cacti that I want to consolidate into 1 pot. Is this the time to do it?

here ya go Sheri:

Repot in spring, after the plant finishes flowering, to give it time to re-establish a healthy root system over the summer.

Splitting the plant for propagation is better done in late spring or early summer.

Christmas cactus isn't usually divided at the roots, instead stems are removed and potted up to grow into new plants.

(I found a few extra things so I just put them here for you)

When you transplant them, do not use a pot that is more than 2 inches larger then the last pot, as they really like to be slightly root-bound--but then you are going to put 2 plants together, so just don't use a huge pot...

When to Repot Christmas cactus

Most plants are best repotted when they display new growth in spring, but Christmas cactus repotting should be done after blooming ends and the flowers have wilted in late winter or early spring. Never attempt to repot the plant while it is actively blooming.

Don"t rush to repot Christmas cactus because this hardy succulent is happiest when its roots are slightly crowded. Frequent repotting can damage the plant.

I agree with this . dodge. bow

Thanks peeps. I don't do well taking care of house plants so the fewer the better. I figure if I can get these two in one pot they'll be happier and I will too.

I hear you. And to my notion the whole thing should become root bound all the quicker, right ???? (Root bound for a Christmas cactus is a good thing)

Good luck...

Yes, I have always assumed that was the case with cactus.

Mine re green & healthy but do not bloom. I have one pot that is rather full, so I have homes for the near future....well anyway I can dream, right ???

wonder why it won't bloom Junie. One would think sooner or later it would just because it's supposed too.

Bestofour: I have no idea other than they are probably not root bound. I agree, you would surely think that they would bloom every one in awhile just because they should, as you say,...but I guess time will tell.... why

Crhistmas Cacti bloom set timing is triggered by a combination of day length and temperature.

I don't know where the current thread is but my cactus has got buds on it for the 2nd time. I was looking for the other thread to see when it bloomed last. After it bloomed I watered it and moved it to another location and it has buds again. The reason I moved it is that part of it looks like it's dying, shriveled up a bit, so I thought a new location might help. I don't know how to care for this thing.

I promise to look tonight and find the thread and try to find care instructions. I too could use them I am not the best at caring for them myself

Can we or should we consolidate these threads about the cacti?

Look Sheri at what I just found.....this is from Post # 385815..I posted it on January 13, 2015 at 4:46pm..... and in this thread too....

Splitting the plant for propagation is better done in late spring or early summer.

Christmas cactus isn't usually divided at the roots, instead stems are removed and potted up to grow into new plants.

(I found a few extra things so I just put them here for you)

When you transplant them, do not use a pot that is more than 2 inches larger then the last pot, as they really like to be slightly root-bound--but then you are going to put 2 plants together, so just don't use a huge pot..

Sheri--there are still 2 threads...but you cannot post in the one in The Plants and flowers Forum any longer--and there is a link from that Thread to this one in Houseplants.

I hope this is easier for you and everyone else...If nothing else, one will be directed to the correct place now..

Oh thank you Juniegirl. You're too good to me. I'm going to send this link to dodge and see if she'll join us here again. I don't have many house plants but barb has great luck with them.

You are welcome, Sheri....Yes Barb does have wonderful luck with houseplants, it would be nice to have her back.....she is missed. I think Dodge said she has trouble staying logged in here now a days....It would be lovely to see her regularly again.

about the cactus...since they are in pots, and we keep them in the house, I consider them houseplants.

Well phooey. You take the best care of yours and all I do is water once in a while and leave it alone. I keep it in the same spot all of the time.

Thanks---I do not even water the one in the cool room very often either-----

I think I will repot it using the same pot, just new soil and then I will feed it) we will see what that does

mine didn't have as many blooms as usual. My mother keep hers in front of a bay window all year long and it blooms like crazy. I think we're trying too hard.

let me see if I can upload my latest cactus photo. There are like 4 buds. I will take another photo when it is in Bloom.

Sheri, I think my next move it is repot it..perhaps with some cactus soil.....

yes it is leggy but I assure you it has plenty of room, width-wise---but it has lost some soil---perhaps that is the issue.

Junie, my sister took hers to the lady who does her nails, left it 2 weeks, and it came back gigantic and gorgeous. The lady told her to take it outside tomorrow and soak it with the hose no matter how cold it is outside, let it drain, then bring it back in. She said all this stuff about moving it around the house isn't true. I'm going to soak mine tomorrow and see what happens.

Thanks for the information, Sheri. It is worth a try !

When I get home, I will repot mine, (just so there is enough soil in the pot) then I will put it in the tub, give it a good soaking and then we will see. i

I do have 1 new bud so far though.

This oriental lady said you have to take it outside Junie. Her specific instructions were to take it outside, no matter how cold, and hose it down, let it drain out of the wind, then bring it back inside. I'm going to do it today. I'm not sure if you should repot before you soak it though.

Ok thanks on the outside idea. And FYI: the only reason I am reporting is going to be done is that the pot is very low on soil.

I talked to my sister yesterday and she said the lady says to once in a while sit it outside in the sun no matter how freezing it is, leave it for several hours, bring it back in. But don't do this when it's very hot outside. I figure what have I got to lose. Mine actually has perked up since being hosed down the other day. I didn't realize it looked bad but it's so much sturdier looking now.

Wonder if you could add soil to the pot inside of repotting?

I can try that, Sheri....next time you think of it, please ask if We should set the cactus out in the sun year round ? I get the not in the heat...I tried that one year on my deck ( west side of house) that did not go so well...But I guess early morning in the summer on the East side.? Bless you for all of your pointers.

Could you find out how often to soak it out in the cold ?

We soak it only once. And I think we sit it in the sun in the winter once in a while, not sure what exactly once in a while is, but not when it's warm.

Ok thanks, Sheri. I will add some soil tomorrow and then soak it outside like you were advised.

I think I will pretend once in a while is once a month. What do you think ?

Sheri:
This afternoon I filled the cactus pot with soil, then I put it out in the cold--(24-26*F) and I watered it heavily while it was outside . I tried to find a place out of the wind, and I put a chair beside one side for extra protection. I let it out for 1-1/2 hours...then as it began to snow I brought it in.. not several hours but better than nothing. It is now back in the unheated bedroom I keep it in.
Good/not so good news is while moving my philodendron that I got when my oldest was born, I found another cactus nestled behind them. it was healthy, sturdy, strong and dk. green. BUT I had to move it so as to have a space for my wireless printer. WE will hope it likes it's new home.....
As I was concerned for the icy/snowy conditions today I did not put that one out. We will see what happens with the first one before I do anything with the 2nd cactus. while it is healthy it has not flowered at all. It is supposed to be purple--I hope it does flower one of these days............

I checked my cactus this morning. it is definitely NOT looking good. I am almost sure it is frozen. I will let it go a few weeks to see if it comes out of it, and I will bring it into the warmer rooms to see if that helps, but for me anyway this was an experiment gone wrong. I am so happy that it worked for you.

Oh no. I didn't realize you were putting it in an unheated room. We were told to put it in the house just like a regular plant. I guess mine got warm when it came inside.

yep probably...I had been keeping it in the unheated room alls along, which is why it was blooming.(I think). So I just put it back in there when I brought it inside.
I did not read that part of it about a heated room--my mistake. it does not look real bad so far (out in my dining room) So I iwill be hopeful.

tI just checked, and I had to remove the bottom say 2 inches of each limb, as they were lost. I think since I took it in earlier than advised the main part of the plant was saved. ALSO I have 3 pieces that I removed before I took it out, so when they are scaled over I will replant them.

I so hate this has happened to yours because mine looks a little better every day. Mine has always been a little droopy looking and I didn't even realize it was supposed to be so perked up.

Not to be concerned, Sheri. It was not sunny for long, then the snow started. I imagine it is supposed to be a cold but very sunny day with no wind....and no changing temps.

what is left is looking ok....and I will plant the other 3 pieces I kept back today. it will all be fine.

I am so glad that it has helped your cactus. this way we know it can work.

Update:

I just planted the 3 scabbed-over limbs of my cactus. I used a new pot, with new seed medium that I soaked before filling the pot. and oh, I used root hormone on them.

So you just plant pieces that fall or break off?

I broke them off of the healthy plant. I had them in water for a few days, but then I decided to let it scan over and then dipped the scabbed ends in root hormone, and then planted them in New organic soil.

Another one of my cactus pots are made up of pieces I got from Dodge and Plants N Pots.

I just looked back at your picture from December 6, 2017 and that's how mine looked except bigger. Now it's standing almost straight up. I didn't realize it was sick.

Good for you.
When I added soil back before I put mine out in the cold, it was instantly standing up better, as it had more support.

As an update, my cactus is looking better, with the exception of the 2 inch piece that dropped off yestetday. But if it lives, and it looks like it will, I will be happy.

Here is my poor poor cactus. It is not growing but aside from leaves dying occasionally, parts are still OK.

Oh my, you did not kill anything. You merely told us what some lady said to do. You did the same thing to your cactus and it benefited from it. I did not have to follow what the lady suggested, but I did. MY choice. So do not feel bad.

Besides, my cactus may well come out of it. Time will tell.

I sure hope it comes out looking good because mine looks great. My sister specifically asked her about the freezing temps we were having at that time and she said to do it anyway. I guess your temps are just too cold.

well that is true--your cold temps are warmer than our cold temps..that is for sure. Could be the lady meant that for your area.

I have to admit I'm a little bit sick of these cactuses. dodge sent me mine and that's the only reason I've tried to keep it going. Other than aloe, it's the only houseplant I have. I used to have that asparagus fern but I left it outside last year and it died. Houseplants are too much trouble for me.

Thanks much, but the credit goes to the plant. I was raising little ones & so basically ignred it a lot, and yet the thing lived. I bet it got watered once a month if I was doing good, BUT it was in an east facing window and it/they loved it there.

I've got it sitting in a window that gets sun. Maybe keeping it in the dark isn't the real answer.

Crazy as it seems this cactus is blooming prettier than it did at Christmas. Wonder if this means it won't bloom at Christmas this year.

Well this is a timely thread. You guys will appreciate this.
I have a 30 yr old Christmas cactus! I cannot believe it either. I got it from a friend long ago who was going to throw it away.
it was tiny way back then. it is not all that big, but still gets a few blooms on it every year. it has survived 4 moves, cats knocking it over, you name it. I have repotted it, but it has been a few years. I am so afraid of killing it. I think it could use a repot and new soil what do you guys think?

Ditchy, I don't know what to say. Junie and I have tried to do everything by the book with these plants and since Christmas I've done everything opposite and the plants seems to be doing lots better. Mine was started by a piece sent to me by a lady who used to be on here, dodge, you may remember her, so I think it's 5 or 6 years old. It blooms every year but last Christmas it didn't have a lot of blooms. I've repotted it once.

That is true we have...if you do repot, I think perhaps use the same bot or just one a very little bit larger but use new soil???

I am kind of scared to do anything with how ancient it is.
I have not fed it in forever, this spring, or soon, what do you thing of feeding it? is their succulent food?
I mean at best it gets 4 flowers a year.

I've never fed mine. What Junie and I did this year was take advice from an oriental lady who brought my sisters back to life. Mine improved but it just about murdered Junies. My sisters was almost dead. Her advice was to take it out January 6th, no matter how cold, and hose it down, then bring it back in and put it at a sunny window. My sisters has been fully blooming since the end of January. Mine is still blooming and has new buds.

and I do feed mine half strength every once in awhile

I took it upon myself to take mine out and hose it down again today. All the recent blooms had fallen off so I thought why not. We shall see.

Hi dodge. I've been ignoring ALL the Christmas cactus rules and mine is doing better. You sent it to me. You actually sent 2 but one died. It never recovered from the trip from your house to mine :)

You are both so lucky that your cactus are blooming. I am just happy mine are green.

My sisters voodoo plant lady told her we should take our plant outside, sit it in the morning sun, hose it down, leave it all day. It's a million degrees out there but she lives locally and knows that, so I might try it. I'm actually thinking of leaving mine outside and letting it fend for itself. I'm tired of dealing with it.

well I was not happy with the Voodoo lady's advice before--so you let me know what happens with yours then I will see about trying it with mine. But I will not be doing it on the west side of my house...it is really scorching on that side.

So today I went to the Korean alteration lady with Johnny. She had 3 Christmas cactuses sitting in her front window in full sun where they stay all year long. One is 10 years old and gigantic. She said she sits them outside when it rains and lets them get drenched. Maybe we"re trying too hard.

Thanks. And you are probably right about trying too hard. I moved 2 of mine I to the bottom shelf of my plant shelf where they got very little sun. Doing great. So when I moved the plants to MO I once again protected them from sun. Still doing great. Perhaps less is more ? And it is sounding to me like the cactus might just adapt to whatever their situation is. I do like the idea about rain watering them though. Thanks.

Junie my cactus is blooming. Noticed it yesterday. I've treated it like all other plants this year, left in the sun, watered when it was dry, sat it outside and hosed it off a time or two.

I must just not have a green thumb when it comes to cactus. My Sister in law has 2 beautiful cactus that are blooming as we speak. She said they are kept outdoors all summer. I will try with some of mine next summer. I may have a few shades p!a rd for them now.

Where does your sister in law live? Dodge texted me that hers is blooming too. I think dodge takes extra care with hers, like putting it in the dark and stuff, but I haven't. I was sort of hoping mine would die. Isn't yours like a family heirloom?

My S-I-L lives in Ohio very near the W. Virginia boarder. If the cactus are not outside they are on the floor by her glass sliding doors. Not real sure of which direction, but I think the door was on the north side of the house.

My cactus is pieces of various cactus from day Dodge and P!ants N Pots. I also have a few cuttings left from some my DD bought me several years ago.

The o n e time one bloomed, I had it in a cold room with very little light for awhile...but like I said I got like 2 blooms. They were pretty though.

That's the original pot and the original dirt and other than taking it outside to hose it down a time or two it's sat on the dining room table since last Christmas. I moved it to the kitchen table today.
