Hello there.

I am wondering if any of you use that homemade beer fertilizer that's floating around online.

1 12 oz can of beer (not light)
1/2 cup of ammonia
1 cup of epsom salt
2 cups of water

(Some recipes call for 1/2 cup of black strap molasses and 4 tablespoons of bloom booster as well)

Mix it together well. Keep it in a plastic or glass container. Use one tablespoon of the solution per gallon of water and use it monthly. It's supposed to work on all types of houseplants. succulents too.

I haven't tried it yet, but I'm wondering if anyone else has and what the results were.

LOL I guess no one has used it. I'd never used it before either, but I tried it yesterday. I posted the question on AllExperts.com. Here's the answer I received.

i'm a biology major (focus in botany) and i have a hard time believing that this would help i am especially worried about using pure ammonia (NH4 which is slightly caustic and corrosive) which is very different from the ammonias used in fertilizers which is NH3 or urea, a simple version easily broken down by bacteria into nitrates (NO3)... any organicly based substance added to the soil will add nurishment such as coffee grounds, beer is mostly water and although has some organic content...

I have used pure ammonia to keep critters away. It is effective as long as it is still damp. I put it in a spray bottle full strength and laid out a line in the soil where I didn't want skunks to go. It helped a lot to keep them off of my porch at night and away from some of my plants. It never hurt my plants. I have also poured it into gopher holes to discourage them. It works there too without killing the grass around it.

but your not acually... soaking the soil down to the roots with ammonia? (that would be a lot)your descriptions suggest otherwise moisting the upper surface of soil. its not very safe to me... pouring this poison down gopher holes will miss the shallow grass roots but will effect deep rooted plants. (gopher spikes dont distribute poison too all life but target just the gopher)ammonia is a poison just 5mg in the blood stream can be fatal for a human... several natural deterents are useful and effective i keep critters with soap solutions with pyretherins and canola oils... i also keep unwanted critters away with wolf urine, my cats urine around the yard helps too... i use beer to keep snails away, and ladybugs for aphids
