WOW, we were well over 200 in the last "What did you do in the Garden" thread.... zoink

I went out between rain showers and put some flower pots, and my bird feeders away so they do not get blown around tonight if the bad storms return...While out I pulled some weeds--I so wish it were done storming. The ground is so soggy that pulling weeds was actually fun !!!

so short story.....I pulled some weeds, but I guess we have to start someplace, huh ?

Today I put out some of the squash plants in the straw bales but it's so windy that I stopped. I was going to plant the corn and okra but it's just too windy. Maybe tomorrow.

I am certainly getting a late start this year. nono

I transplanted 6 or 7 sunflower plants to my small veggie garden. Now I will hope they settle in, so the birds will be happy.

Then as the ground was nice & soggy, I pulled about 20 gallons of huge weeds (roots & all) from thier current homes. Then I began to fill up my half barrel that I used to put water lilies in, with dirt. I will plant the 2 remaining cherry tomatoes that I have in it. I planted the first cherry tomato plant in the 27 qt. pot that I keep on the deck for such tomato plants. As I usually do, I may also put a basil plant in with it.

Rod says we need to raise the west end of my flower bed, as it is sinking into the ground. when I know what kind of dirt I want he will stop on his way hom & pick it up, as he will have the truck.

You have worked hard, Carol. I miss having access to a truck. I do not miss paying for it or maintaining it, however.

Bless you Tina, but there is so much to do yet. This afternoon I finished filling the half barrel and had planned on planting the last 2 cherry tomatoes. BUT we "might" get a bad storm tonight so that did not happen. Instead I "battened down" the hatches outside some so if it does storm as little as possible gets messed up.

**Pulled a few more weeds**

I hope there are lots of onions left too, Sheri.

Barb, to my notion you can replant those 8 onions. I plan my onions in stages so I have "green onions" for a longer period of time anyway. So this just gives you a chance to start a second round of onions, right ??? why

yes I love the tops too. I put them in salads, on baked potatokies (as you would cut up chives) and I put them in scrambled eggs. if you have not tried that you must do so.

in the winter I finely chop up sweet onion, cook it in butter for a bit & them add my egg to scramble it. Both are wonderful.

My Dad used to make a end of season tomato dish that had the green onions in it. He fried say 6 pieces of bacon in a pan, took them out, crumbled them up & set them aside. he then removed all but a bit of the bacon grease, then added cut up onions (green and or the fully mature onion), peppers, & tomatoes, etc. cooked it all together & at the last dropped in the crumbled bacon. YUM !! he would put that on top of pork chops, mashed potatoes, eggs of any kind (I liked it on scrambled) and anything else he took a notion to top with it. It also froze well. I had a seal-a-meal & I would put it in them so in the winter I had a reminder of the summer.. YUM !!

and oh I forgot--he would start with cooked macaroni, top with that & call it poor man's spaghetti. That too was yummy.

There's got to be a way to keep potatoes covered. My 2 foot ditch hasn't worked. I've already had to cover them 3 or 4 times and I'm running out of dirt.

Yes, I was wondering what the problem was too. Is rain washing heaped soil away?

I am wondering about Sheri's comment also. I plant my potatoes in a 12 inch trench, covered 6 inches down...then cover another 6 inches when they reach 4 inches high. I then hill them up two more times and that's it.

Yesterday was a grass or dandelion cutting day lol There were more dandelions than grass.

I was wondering if she got confused about how one plants potatoes in a pot verses in the ground.
b/c
when growing them in a pot you plant them in about 7 inches of soil, let them come up & then cover them, let them grow & repeat until you get to the top of the pot/box---whatever you are using....

And yes I agree with Tina, Sunny,--Dandelions are yummy as a salad. Esp. the young ones.

Dandelion flowers make good jelly/syrup. Dandelion roots are good for a drink. And the whole thing is medicinal in very good ways.
I settled on growing potatoes in a tower. In my cubes that are 4X4X5 ft, I could easily grow over a hundred pounds in each of 2. We have very poor soil for in ground growing. And I have very destructive critter problems. So a tower it will be. I will buy bagged soil to plant in and top off as the plants grow. I have planted in bagged soil before. Those were in different towers than I have available now.

Yesterday I hand tilled my whole veggie garden...I am thinking in the upcoming years that I may have to give in and buy a small tiller.

I despise dandelions on my lawn...I'll mail them all to you for your eating pleasure lol

OMG..OMG..OMG !!!

I am SOOO tickled !!!

Today I was in the neighborhood so I stopped at a nursery & bought some annuals and some tomato plants. I had SUCH a good time !!! YAY !!! Then, and then, I actually got to go outside & begin to clean off my largest flower bed. I got that done--and I tranplanted 4 or 5 of my perennials. (yay me)

I also cleaned out my small flower bed to the north of the garage door too. I really need to split my Hostas and my 2 Lirope. If I had someone to give them to I would be sure to do it. I just cannot discard a living plant--so I will not split them yet.

Way to go, Carol. I love getting things done outdoors. It is a sense of accomplishment unlike any other.

I do not know how Sheri prepares her squash but I like to saute it in butter, with onion & garlic.
Of course I like it seasoned with lemon pepper, breaded & fried also.

Last night I weeded most of my veggie garden and planted 4 of my tomato plants. I may give the rest of the smaller ones I have away away and buy some larger ones now.

I have decided to do away with my asparagus patch though. My yard is so low I cannot get out to harvest much of it in the spring & since my DH does not eat it, it is not worth the work to me. Next up is trimming up my herb garden. Perhaps that is what I will do tonight.

Sounds as if there are good times to be had at Sunny's house !!

My youngest grandson went home just now--but we got in a good visit.

Henry got Grandpa a "Grandpa shirt" with Luke & Henry's name on it
Then we both got a photo that has Henry's feet print shaped into sorta like a heart shape that says,
I "heart" (the heart is made by his feet prints) you Grandma & Grandpa, from the top of my head to the tips of my toes, Love Henry...

And the best news...I have a new laptop...it has Windows 8 so now to learn how to use it... zoink Valarie did buy be a cordless mouse though so that is good.

PS: I am on the desktop now

I watered my tomatoes, sunflowers, herbs and flower beds last night. Then I got the one side of my rocked area weeded. So now the smaller side is done. Good news is part of the larger side is done as well.

Note: What really needs done is all the rock needs taken up, the area re-papered or sand put down & the the rock put back. BUT as I cannot do that & I will get no help, weeding &* putting down new rock is what I will do.

AND : I have Red Cerry Tomatoes!!!! I will go out & get photos before I pick them--YAY for lucnh time !!!

It's so unbelievably hot that even the petunias are scorching. It's horrible. Watering doesn't help because they are being scorched from the top.

about watering in the scorching weather.
I take my houseplant watering can outside & put the long nozzel down thru the plant to the dirt on flowers in pots..that way no water gets onto the plants, so as to prevent the scorcing.

THEN even though you are not supposed to water late a night, in this warm weather that is just what I do---that way your flowers/plants/veggies are less liley to get burned when the water gets on the leaves and or flowers.

and FYI: I had to water my large pot that has flowers in it, last night & then turn around & water it this morning, to keep the petunia's and sweet potato vines from wilting.

Much scorches here. And gets wind burnt. I have to shade many things that take hot weather pretty well other places. growing in the desert is different.

junie, I have been watering at night and in the morning. Sometimes I've watered 3 times a day. The flowers aren't wilting they are scorching. It took me a while to figure it out.

I live in the desert with intense sun. I use mostly overhead watering with micro sprinklers, all day long. I guess I don't get scorching to my flowers because that micro sprinkler system cools the plants and the air around them. I am pretty certain of it.
I water this way because it is the best way, in my climate, to sink into the soil in the broadest way without using too much water. It wets the soil on my hillsides without causing runoff down the hill. And it really uses the least amount of water than any other way I have tried.
I do live on gravity fed, well water with less pressure than city water. I have to replace micro sprinklers pretty often due to sand and grit that gets into the system. But I have found this is the best system for me.

That's a great way to keep things watered Tina.

I have been working away on my shed...if I ever talk about shingling something else, you are welcome to beat the idea out of me with a cedar shingle haha

It's only 10 by 12...but shingling only covers a 5 inch row at a time. And all the cuts take twice the amount of time. I'm almost done the third side.

Painted the front step today..cut the lawn yesterday.

I want to do something to pretty up my pretend green house but can't figure out what. The outside walls are sort of like what you'd find in trailers only not. It's some sort of thin metal siding. I don't know if it will take paint. Any ideas?

Today I weeded some more (it is a never-ending chore it seems)
I planted a Lemon Thyme herb plant and a "Toto Lemon Rudbeckia" flower.
I moved some pavers around and then I watered a few things.

Wow, that does not sound like much, but I was out there for over 2 hours.... why

If only our flowers grew like flowers instead of like weeds.

Tonight I pulled out all of my spiderwort. It was slowly taking over most of the area of one of my flower beds that are aginst the back of my house... last year I just pulled out what I did not want--this year it was WAY worse than last year, so I pulled it all out--now since the roots are still there I guess that I will have to use some roundup on them...(I best be careful)

and I also planted what looks like a min-coleus plant..we shall see..

I've posted pics somewhere. I'll see if I can find them.

I'll check out metal paint but I was thinking more along the lines of shingles or rock or something really cute.

Junie I've got spiderwort too and run it over with the mower every chance I get. Comes right back.

I do think I would hang some sort of garden art or hanging planter on each side of the door. Otherwise, it is really a lovely little building.

Very cute, I'd just give it a fresh coat of paint and as Tina said a piece of garden art to frame the door. Maybe a flower box under the windows.

Ssshhhh, don't say shingles..I hope I never have to use wood shingles again ever lol

Yes, I had a post all written up last night about paint--and it went away---I think a nice sunny color like a yellow with green for trim around the windows. Then put up the decoration as Tina suggested.--perhaps a window box or 2 for flowers to compliment it as Sunny said then ?

Sunny, I'm hoping maybe you'll come shingle it for me.

I like the idea of a planter by the door. I actually have a window planter inside that I bought when I first got the building but the windows are so low that I never hung it. Maybe I can hang it by the door.

I got a bunch of squash and a bunch of cucumbers. The only ripe tomato had blossom end rot. We prepared the soil before planting so I can't figure that out. I think I saw my first squash bug. I'm hoping not but it got away too quickly for me to tell. I laid down a board, that I stole from a king snake, and I'll check under it in the morning. Wish snakes ate squash bugs and hope that king snake isn't back under that board in the morning.

Sounds wonderful Sheri. I am way behind. I have had a very few red grape tomatoes, but my regular sized tomatoes are still small plants, with only a few small green tomatoes. I have bene eating Amish vine-ripened tomatoes though so I am not without tomatoes...

I'm rejuvenating two old hanging flower pot holders; just put two coats of this "cracked silver" rustoleum spray paint and have to wait until tomorrow to paint off the bottom section on them then put a clear coat on them so they'll stay looking pretty...

I've got a chunk of my patio put together (first summer I've been able to use it; I don't think I've shared it yet):
[Linked Image]

I've got some projects to add some river rock in the back, put some succulents on the tier to the right (with perhaps some small river rock), then finish the rest of that tier with some crushed stone and some pavers.

I bought a pool for Trey and I (one of the 15' above ground ones from Walmart) but I have other projects (spray painting more stuff, putting camp dry on a tent, etc) before I can get it up.

I "finally" got out to begin to finish my back yard chores...

I got the 2 cu. ft.bag of mulch laid down tonight--(I need another bag to finish the area) In the area where the dog pen pavers are, I moved pavers to fill in an empty space that had been in one of the pens and laid down some loose rock to fill in the spaces where I had had the moved pavers---Now all is left is to lay down new landscaping paper & more new rock in a few areas...Well there is more to do but that is what is next.

that's so true Sunflowers. Just one more......

We got some spray calcium for the tomatoes but I'm not convinced it's a soil deficiency. I think it may be that our temps went from the mid 80's to 99º over night and stayed that way for weeks.

We've gotten a few tomatoes that have been ok and they are delicious. Still getting cukes and squash, a few okra pods, and a few green beans. The corn is pitiful. Maybe I just can't grow corn.

no idea on the corn junie. I've never had a good crop at this house. Tried growing it in 2 different spots and it doesn't do well.

Still bringing in tons of squash, tomatoes, okra, and now green beans. The beans starting producing late for some reason. The original plan was to plant spinach where the tomatoes are but they are still going strong.

Did you plant your corn in a square block? It seems to be the best way to get corn to grow and mature.

I planted 3 rows of corn. It should have worked well but didn't.

I canned green beans yesterday. I've got to get the potatoes out of the ground sooner or later.

Yesterday I pulled the old 'mother' strawberry plants and tossed them. The new runners are doing great in their new space. Grandgirl also pulled a poatoe plant lol So we will be having new potatoes today for supper.

I'd love to can some fresh bush beans but I need a pressure cooker...some day.

New baby potatoes are a "good thing", Sunny... lol

Can't you put the filled & sealed jars in a canning pot & just boil them ??? and if not a canning pot then just do a few jars at a time in a soup pot....

If you need the directions I can PM them to you.

I wish I could but they have to be boiled for 3 hrs without the water level reaching the tops of the bottles. My grandfather used to can them for my grandmother outside on a wood fire...I remember it was such a big ordeal making sure they stayed at a full roaring boil and adding boiling water every 15 minutes.

Maybe some day..I would like to make a stone burning pit for such plans.

Yes, potatoes are best canned in a pressure canner.

Years ago everyone around here used a water bath canner for everything. I guess there wasn't even such a thing as pressure canning. But now all the literature says pressure canning is safer. I do have some friends who still use a water bath though and they haven't died from botulism yet. One of my friends doesn't do either for tomatoes. She just boils the jars and lids, cooks the tomatoes, puts them in the jars then turns the jars upside down to seal. Says she's always done it this way.

Yes, high acid foods are still good in a water bath process, so tomatoes, pickles and jams and jellies with acid in them work well. Low acid foods need to be heated all the way through, thoroughly. So pressure canning is best. That is best for meats, potatoes and beans. I am sure that is why Carol's family did that 3 hour hard boil on potatoes.

sonny's family did the 3 hr boil...

even with beans mom did a 20 minute water bath. but then she could have well cooked the beans first...and she put raw tomatoes in jars w/ salt & then the water bath. none of us dead yet...though I freeze mine..

I spent 3 + hours outside this afternoon.
I cleaned off the brick area around landing of the deck steps, all the edging bricks, 2 flower beds that are up against the house, (well all but the Autumn Joy sedum). Then I cleaned off part of my veggie garden (herbs & tomatoes are left to do), and part of my long flower bed in the back yard. And then I took in my Hummingbird feeders. Those I have to clean yet.

One of my feeders was empty so I cleaned it and put it away rather than refilling it. I'm not convinced that the hummers are totally gone though so I'll wait a while on the others.

yea, well, sorta. I let it go last year and then ended up not getting it ready, so I made a point of doing it this year before it got too cold. I hear it may be nice yet tomorrow so I hope to have time to do a thorough job.

Sheri, I am not convinced they are completely gone her either but I knew they would not be drinking the nectar, they both had bugs in them. So now they are gone.

A man is here cutting back some gigantic shrubs. It's like all of a sudden, guess all the rain we've had, and these things are taller than the house. We need our trees pruned too but the tree man isn't calling back.
