dodge, you know I love talking and looking at birds. Was just watching a show about the Christmas count. I'm trying to get my grand children involved in bird watching. They are busy busy busy. Too busy.

I like my birds too--I do not have the nice camera that you and Sheri do, Barb, but I love this----and the birds benefit because as I am talking I tend to keep my feeders better re-filled shewinks...

I learned yesterday that the Christmas bird count used to be the Christmas bird kill. In 1900, ornithologist Frank Chapman, an early officer in the then budding Audubon Society, proposed a new holiday tradition-a "Christmas Bird Census"-that would count birds in the holidays rather than hunt them. Easy as that. I want to join a bird watching group but the closest one is in Charlotte. Might join up anyway.

Went right to the store and forgot sunflower seeds and suet. I had some safflower seeds that the birds don't particular like but I put them out anyway. I figure in this freezing weather they're gonna have to eat what's out there and not be too picky.

They are spoiled. Today I got some sunflower seeds and suet. They had barely touched the safflower seeds. I guess we have enough berries around to keep them full.

mine left the seeds--all varieties--alone until this last snowstorm--now they cannot get enough--sad thing is I could not buy any thistle last saturday.
The juncos have moved on to sunflower seeds--but my poor finches--- shock

We have 2 rescue cats that live outside and it seems lately every time I walk out the door they are at my feet. Birds won't let you take their picture with cats watching.

Hi everyone. It's been awhile since I've been on. And once again I have forgotten how to post a picture :(

I know I can add a link, however I would just like to put them in the post.

I have a couple of Dark Eyed Junco Pictures to share. They are new to my yard. Don't see them everyday and I have had a really hard time getting pictures of them.

Dodge is right---but she forgot to say, copy & paste the "img" line that is listed under the photo that you wish to import to your post. That way the photo will copy here--
Also, there is a tutorial up in "New members" to help you.

It was yesterday. My birds still haven't eaten the safflower seeds I put out. They're waiting on the sunflower seeds.

Yes VERY nice Sheri--your photo taking abilities are dantastic. thumbup Plus you get so many nice birds---YAY for you !!!

My birds come in spurts. As it is now, they come to eat my sunflowers when I put them out, but they do not seem to like my new finch feeder. (you cannot see the seeds inside) I am hoping they learn to use it this summer & so next winter it will be old news.

and they are not real fond of the seeds I put in my wild bird feeder either---oh well. I guess if they get hungry enough they will eat huh??

I can't remember the name of the first picture. That bird only shows up here when it's really cold and right before we get snow. Wonder if we'll get flurries this week since he's here.

dodge, I'm glad you put out your feeders. Around here we have evergreens, like holly trees, that have berries all winter and nandina that has berries all winter - not sure if you have those in your area. I try to keep water out for the birds but I don't have a heater and the water keeps freezing these days.

juniegirl, I am fortunate in that I live in an area with a lot of different birds. I love the Eastern bluebird. They weren't in my yard when we first came so we put up a bluebird box and they keep having babies so now we have a lot. It's so pretty to look out the window and see a red bird, yellow bird, and a blue bird all in the same area.

Yes it sounds as if you are indeed fortunate. It is very nice of you to share your pictures so we too can see such beauty. Thanks so much kissie

I had a blue bird house at the "farm" the year before we left. We had a family complete with eggs. Then we had a storm and one parent was killed (we found him/her a week later all washed up against a pole). So then I guess the other parent pushed the eggs out of the nest & left. boohoo
I think I will put up a new bluebird house this next spring. Thanks for reminding me.
