Good Morning !

before anyone can suggest a flower--we would need to know where you are living and the zone you are in.

Hi Prachi - I live in NY too - Rockland County. Which part do you live in?

What sort of flowers are you looking to grow? Annuals - have to be planted each year, or perennials - come back each year. Flowering bushes? flowers that grow from bulbs? There are many many flowers that one can grow in NY, but we really need a bit more information about where you live.

What kinds of sun exposure do you have? Full sun? Shade? A little of each?
Do you want to plant in the ground? In pots? Would you like vines?

I can make lots of suggestions once I know more about your growing conditions.

Hi,

I live in Westchester.
And i am looking forward to grow beautiful looking flowers. Any kind of a flower i would like to plant.
As i mentioned in previous post there is a small garden where i want to plant flowers and there is a shade in half part and other than that there is a full sun. And it seems that you have good knowledge about flowers and plants and hope you suggest me something new and better.

Thank you!!

Hi again, Prachi! I am from Westchester - my dad still lives in the northern part of New Rochelle, on the Scarsdale border. I have planted a small rock garden at my parents' house for years. Every year for Mother's Day!

That said... some of the best plants I've had success in the shade there are impatiens. They are annuals, but spread very nicely and come in many colors. If you like leaves with color for shade, there are many varieties of coleus. They do get a flower spike but it is insignificant and takes away from the pretty leaves.

For sun, I like dwarf zinnias - I've been growing these from seeds the past few years and they spread and fill a small garden nicely. They come in pink, white, or orange. There are also new guinea impatiens that can take the sun now. The flowers are larger than the shady impatiens, and there are different colors for each.

Then there are flowers from bulbs. Daffodils, crocuses, and hyacinths are the first to bloom in early spring. Then you can grow lilies, gladiolas, and all sorts of other bulbs.

You haven't said if you want to plant each year, or have perennials. The thing about perennials is that they usually bloom for a shorter time than annuals do.

Since this is a houseplant forum, I thought at first you were looking for some flowering plants for inside your home. For outside, why don't you try 1 or 2 of those flowering plants which look pretty to you in the garden store, and see how they do. This way you can find out what does well in your particular garden, and get more of them next season. And regarding impatiens, I don't know if disease is a problem in New York, but in Florida, impatiens have almost disappeared.
