Last year I had the worst time with squash bugs. I tried every thing, organic and otherwise (don't tell on me) but nothing worked. I got very little squash because of those horrible bugs. So this year I thought I might plant squash in raised beds, which I would have to build. BUT.... now my plan is to plant squash and other veges in straw bales, depending on how many Johnny brings home. Whadda think?

The straw bales are the way to go. We have had an unusual amount of rain this year but I've had more squash without too many bugs and it's been wonderful. A few squash plants have stopped producing blooms so I replanted and one of them is already producing squash. This is wonderful.

The squash is finished for this season but we had an abundance. I'm sure all the rain made the difference. I planted a tomato plant in one of the bales (after the squash was gone) and it's doing great. I planted a cucumber plant in another one and there are already cucumbers growing on it. I planted another squash seed in another one and it's up. Fall is coming so we'll see what happens. The cukes should be ready in a day or two so they'll be ok. Still getting tomatoes and egg plant out of the regular garden. This has been a bumper year for me.
