This is the first time I've tried to grow cantaloupe, and it's been an interesting experience. Recently, I was checking on my vines, and finally found that they are starting to produce the beginnings of fruit. I accidentally broke off a very small fruit (about the size of a walnut), and my brother decided to taste it. I thought he was crazy when he said it tasted like cucumber, but took a nibble myself and sure enough it did taste and smell like cucumber. There are a few more immature fruits growing on the vine, and they smell very much like cucumber. Is this normal? they are near my cucumber vines, but I don't know that this would affect them. Maybe it's a silly question, but I'm new to gardening, and thought I would ask.
Thanks!

Unlike squash and other melons, cucumber and cantaloupe plants generally won't cross pollinate so growing them together shouldn't affect the taste of a fully ripened fruit (plus they both require direct pollination either through insects or humans).

Though at the same time I have heard of a cucumber-cantaloupe hybrid called a "Cuculoupe" in Louisiana which ended up being a veggie-melon which where about a yard long, a few inches across and have a waxy, yellow skin...
