I never put in much of a garden, too sick this year. My potatoes are growing well and I see a blossom on the tomatoes. Everything else is growing slowly...too much cool weather.

It is funny that some of these are fall planted here. Peas, potatoes, onions, carrots and some squashes do best in our winters.

Looks like this summer I'm going to be putting off doing much gardening at all; we're still waiting to get the back yard done (supposedly they'll be here on Monday) so I have to wait on that, we've got a couple of starters going (pumpkins, spaghetti squash, lots of flowers) but I won't be able to get my raised bed in until next spring it seems...

We have some tomatoes on the front porch that're doing well, and some strawberries on the back porch that Trey likes to just go out and eat whenever he can though lol..

I donno, a wooden bed would probably be cheaper but I kind of want to make a large bed out of cinder blocks... 14'x5' and use the open areas of the cinder blocks for herbs...

It'll cost a lot more though, so that's where I am right about now lol..

Yes, I do know. I have to toss some shade cloth over tomatoes and other summer crops sometimes because it gets too hot. They stop producing if they get too warm. This weekend it is supposed to get about 110* here. If I had crops out, they would get covered.

Tomatoes here are doing pretty well. The Cherokee Purple are ripening first and they are juicy and tasty. Nothing like a tomato sandwich.

Dodge,,,I just saw this---why don't you see if your sister would like to plant flowers in some large pots...

There are some that are like 17 inches wide by 14 inches deep....They will not be able to be moved so readily, but they will afford your sister the space to plant flowers, easily done & raied off of the ground. She could even plant veggies in them. I have a patio tomato plant in one as we speak, and with it I have some basil---

There are also all differnt size rectangular pots one could use. I plant geraniums in one like that.
There are even some that you water from the bottom.

Look what I found this evening. A ripe tomato, and before the 4th of July !! That is a good thing--but the bad thing ??....is that an animal got to it first, & I had to pitch it.

but here is a photo before I took it off of the vine.:

I'm way ahead of you guys. We've been getting lots of stuff out of the garden for a few weeks now. It's been pouring rain for a couple of days and is supposed to continue for the rest of the week so I'm not sure what's going to happen.

That has something to do with the climate you live in .
Your seasons are ahead of ours.
Maybe we ought to have plant swaps with our one zone s ..LOL

I am in zone 7. You guys will be eating fresh tomatoes and I'll have to buy them at the store. It's a good plan so there can be fresh vegetables somewhere in the world all the time.

Thanks Barb --- I feel the same, that is why I took the photo---animal or not, at least I got the tomato. clap

well, even with all the rain I managed to put out my tomatoes....Sadly that is all I got out this year---with the exception of my asparagus and my herbs,- but those do not count as they were there from last year.

next year I think I am going to ask for a very small raised bed--so I can plant potatoes in it-----that way perhaps they will be up enough to not to rot---Lordy I miss my garden at the farm....I had such wonderfully sloped, fantastic soil.

Barb, I'm not sure about planting potatoes in a raised bed. Around here we keep piling dirt on top of the plant until it flowers so they end up piled up sort of. I guess you could do it in a raised bed if it's a pretty big and deep bed.

This year I planted squash in straw bales and it's done wonderfully. I'm thinking that next year I might try a raised bed for squash and put carrots in straw bales.

Your doing good farming Sheri.
My carrots didn't germinate. 2 times I planted.
And the onions were a disaster too. First time every.

I think we're all living in the Garden of Weedin these days. We can't get the entire yard cut at once because of having to stop for the rain.

I put my seeds out early this year so I got a jump start on the rain. Things got weedy fast and I had to hoe a lot but people who waited couldn't even get their stuff planted because of mud.

The straw bales work great with all this rain. My friend who used them last year when it was so dry said she couldn't keep them watered enough.

Hi guys, over here in great ole Manitoba, my tomato plants are not doing well. Lost all my seedlings this year, so ended up buying Fantastic, Early girl, Beefsteaks, Roma, and Manitoba. Well so far the Roma's are taking off, and the Fantastics are as well but I lost 2 Early girls, one Fantastic, a beefsteak and a Manitoba. The other beefsteak looks sickly as well. The plants I lost were growing so nicely, even had baby tomatoes on them, then wham, something got them, the leaves shrivelled up and that was it. My mother in law bought all hers this year as well, she noticed that the stem is thick up the tomato plant, but around ground level down, the stem looks like it's shrivelling, but hey, the potato plants look good, no telling though if anything is underneath.

Thank you dodge, I looked up blight and yes it could be blight. I left my tomato plant as is, and it finished off by itself. From what I'm reading it says to remove the diseased branches as long as there is some top growth. We live and we learn.

We had it 2 years in a row..Bad.
Now I just seen a few stems an removed it.
What I try to do, Put grass clippings all around them.. It seems worse when the rain splashes the soil an bounces the blight back onto the leaves.THey say it lives in the soil all the time.

dodge, you too with the blight??? Would blight affect the bottom of the stem as well? Starting to wonder if I bought diseased plants? Guess everything is possible. Not really the best year for tomatoes?

I don't have blight on tomatoes.. It is on the Lilys
It starts on tht bottom branches an looks rusty an dead. THey say it comes from the soil.
Tomatoes are fine. It was 2 years before they had it.

My plants are putting out loads of tomatoes but if I'm not careful they split before I get to them. It's either pouring rain or 100 degrees.

I have several larger green tomatoes--but no red ones since the first one that the rabbit got to back before the 4th...

I have a topsy turvy tomato growing, it's getting big but no blooms or tomatoes yet,, this is a trial run, if it doesn't work growing like this then I won't use the topsy turvy again.

I hope it works for you--although I do think you will have to fertilize it (tomato spikes ?) & watch the water levels very closely---DO let us know---I am interested in knowing.

I used a topsy turvy once and got a few tomatoes. Not nearly as many as advertised. I had to water it in the morning and at night.
