Newspaper and cardboard works for between the rows but it's hard to put it down then try to plant through the paper. The issue I've had with cardboard is that pill bugs accumulate by the thousands under it and they will sneak out from underneath and chew tiny plants off at the bottom of the stem.

I haven't done anything in my garden for 2 days. It rained last night so I don't even need to water the straw bale squash today.

I plant my herbs in pots instead of in the ground so I don't have a problem with weeds and in my area if I move them to a protected place they will over winter. I leave the rosemary where it is. It's like a shrub in this area.

A storm woke me up, and it rained all day until almost dark. so no outside work today.

Well, while I had one weed in my herb garden, I had so many weeds everywhere else that is was a real mess, so dont be too envious TK.

about mulching the garden. back at the farm I used to put down newspaper & then put grass clippings on top of the newspaper. My Dh said all I did with that was being grass seed to my garden... I think he was wrong, but so far I do not do that here so much--I think it did work well though...I esp liked to put it around my blackberry plants, that held in moisture and it kept weeds down--I figure it was a 2-fer.

Wouldn't that depend on when you cut the grass?

Today was pretty productive for me.

I cut the grass between the shade bed and the birdbath and raked it all into the upper compost pile.

Then I weeded the rest of the sidewalk bed and got it all mulched. Now, it's ready for the lisianthus and minature roses.

It may not be a huge amound done but it is a start. And I'll take any progress I can get.

Yesterday I managed to prune some of the trees that have been cut down but aren't dead yet. I'm thinking about de-barking the stumps to help them die. Has anyone heard of that?

You got me wrong on the grass clippings.
I am talking of grass only couple inches. Mow an rake ..Not high tall stuff. High tall grass has seeds on that.

I get that Barb--but it would not matter if my grass had gone to seed or if it was just high enough to need raking. (I would have him let it go 1 week in the spring so I could rake enough to use as mulch) he still said this about it. I have come to realize that my Dh likes to be in control and likes to complain, & so I ignore it most of the time.

I think It would do me good and that I am now healthy enough to rake again this year. I am sure my asperagus would benefit from me doing this----

Your sane girl.
Keep thy faith ..
My nosiness paid off, now I am the lone farmer.......I leased my land an enjoy my house an yard etc.
I chuckle of my driveway entrance. He didn't allow me to make a curve into it. Had to go straight an then charge in.......I curve now? Sure beats me why? Upper side he curved in not the lower side where the cars go in??

You got it right .. Hang in there Carol.

today I got a good start on stuff. I cut the grass at the top of the yard.
I raked up the cut grass and leaves for the compost pile.
I put away the weed wacker with it's 150 feet of cord.
I planted 3 miniature roses. I'm becomming quite the rose freak.

Another busy day.

Raked up another 99 gallons of leaves. weeded the left foundation bed. Dug up the soil down to the clay and mixed the clay into the humus. Planted the gladiolus. Spread the mulch.

Filled in the hole where I transplanted the mums.

Much much more to do but that's a good mornings work.

Other than planting lettuce in October and hoping for the best I'm not sure I'll ever be successful with them.

Planting lettuce in the spring just has not worked for me.

Nice planting barb.

dodge, your peas are already producing? Gosh mine are just barely up. My lettuce and radishes are doing well but it may get too hot too fast to get much out of them. I've got some sunflowers coming up.

I planted beets and now with a some grass in the garden I can't figure out if it's beets or grass. I don't know if I should hoe or wait a while. I don't want to let the grass get out of control.

and dodge, how do you keep grass out of your carrots?

Isn't the garden, but I did a lot of restructuring in my living room today; moved the entertainment center to the middle of the room (well, long wall); it's kind of weird having the TV so close now; but I guess it'll help with me griping about it being too small lol... Plus it can be seen from the office area now, but putting the room back together is taking longer than I figured it would lol...

Got a touch of spring fever did you? I do that too. Usually now it's just the light stuff I move.

It's raining again today. It's nice it's keeping the temperature down. Today I planted the lisianthus seeds now I'm crossing my fingers.

I need to reweed the sidewalk. I just did it and it is full of weeds again. I hate that.

I can see the carrots because the grass isn't bad in that row. But I can't tell a beet top from the blades of grass. For some reason there is a bunch of grass (I guess) in the 2 rows of beets. I'm thinking about hoeing up and planting something else because I think it's too late to restart beets.

Today I put out some miracle grow.

Well, I can finally join in. No gardening yet but I have started raking up a bit of the rocks that got thrown with the snowblower...does that count? lol

Hey Sunflowers, of course cleaning up the garden count. I spend most of the spring doing that.

Today I got some gorgeous asian lilies in a rusty orange. a purple gaudia, and a "annual dalia."

I didn't even know there was such a thing as an annual dalia.

Now how do I protect my crocuses, tulips, and asian lilies from the moles and voles?

I hope this works. I planted their pots into the soil so they have the protection of the pot.. Of course next year I'll have to dig up the lily pot and put it in a larger one if the moles don't find it.

Now after the daffodils die back they will get planted between the pots as an extra layer of protection.

I was going to buy some of the garlic to help to but the cloves looked dead. They were really gruesome at Wal-mart.

I wish I could get photobucket to work I'd take pictures and upload them. But the last time I tried it took me to my account and told me I had no pictures. I had over 100 pictures. Some taken each year I've lived here.

today it rained but I was determined. I went out to the shaded area where I had taken down the small dead tree and I tried to dig a hole for the small pine tree. I didn't have a whole lot of luck. Then I went in the back and dug up the tree. That worked much better the clay was very soft both because it's at the bottom of the drain field and because it was raining. So I transplanted the pine tree in the shade area and used the last of the compost to build the soil up against a dead wood pile. Hopefully that will keep the loose soil in place.

Cross your fingers for me. Now I just have to dig up the other two trees that are to close to the drain field. Maybe tomorrow. Digging is a lot of work.

This was one of our weekend projects; brought in 6 guys to get the job done...

I'm going to take and move all of the pavers; where it looks cool and all, they're not even, or even spaced equally apart, plus I don't have enough currently to cover the area that I'd like to; so I'm going to make it go around the area in the front then to the faucet; but I'll do that when it gets cooler out.

Just wait till we have the cash to do the back yard... "Project Yard" has never been more true...

I'm still waiting (im)patiently for my calla Lilies to start blooming lol...

The neighbor got rid of a huge section of her fallen fence this morning, I'm waiting to see if she's planning to take us up on our offer to pay half of the front of the fence if she gets what we wanted...

I got suz's picture but not the rest of them. Is there something wrong with my computer?

Talking of pictures I'm so glad noone had a camera yesterday. I thought since the ground was so soft I'd try for those other two seedling trees. Mistake! The ground had become so soft that it was a swamp. I ended up with mud clear up to my thighs. What a mess. I'm staying out of the yard for a couple of days until it firms up some. This year I want to stay off of the crutches.
