Hey there!

I was wondering if anyone had any advice for me about my dragon tree. I bought it just over a year ago from my local supermarket and had very little trouble with it up until the summer when my grandmother suggested leaving it outside- despite the monsoon of rain we seemed to have!

Following this summer, one stalk had to be cut off thanks to the wind and rain. This stem has grown back by about 15mm since I re-potted the plant about three weeks ago! I'm thrilled! A second stem looks OK. It's the third stem I'm worried about as where the main body of leaves sprouts from the top, there appears to be too many, thus some leaves appear to be splitting in two, to accommodate all this growth.

I have been quite tempted to cut this third stem back but with one stem already cut back, and it being November and wintery, I'm reluctant.

Firstly, is this overgrowth dangerous to my plant? Secondly, is there anything I can do to help it out? I'm really quite attached to it and would hate it to die :-(

Thank you very much in advance for your help...

Rachy

Welcome Rachy. I am so not sure what to tell you about this possible over-growth. I haven't a clue. I have never dealt with this problem.
If you are worried about breaking, I would maybe stake it up and just sit back and watch what it does.
I'm hoping someone with more experience in these plants comes along and has some better advice for you.

It doesn't look like it's going to break but it's just those few leaves around the bottom of the major growth that are splitting in two where more and more leaves seem to have pushed out of a small area. It's ever so strange... I wish I'd kept it inside over the summer, then I might have monitored it a little bit better!x

Then I would just wait and watch. It could be doing something quite natural to it. Mine is outdoors year round and I haven't even looked to see if it is still alive out there. But when it does die back to practically nothing, I just water it well and it tends to come back. I live in a good climate for them with a little care. But not so great about regular care.

It's all very well and good for those with a nice climate! Lol! Please feel free to direct some of the nice weather in a UK based direction! I'm totally, totally jealous! I think if it's still looking a bit peculiar by April, I'll lop off that stem and let it grow back...until then, I guess I'll just keep misting it, watering it, feeding it and playing electronica to it! Lol!

Yes, I do live in a good place for plants outdoors. And that is a very good thing because I routinely kill the simplest of houseplants.
I agree with your lopping it off if it is still not pleasing you by April. Do stick that lopped off piece into a new pot of damp soil and see if it will root for you. .
