No buds at all--I was wondering if they had to be root bound before the bloomed ?? I have them in the one place I really have for them, Barb. They are to the left of my glass sliding doors in the dining area. so while there is not direct sun, there is light.

Wonder if it may be too warm in your house? See I have a cool drafty place.. Right now in teh hall setting back from the window..Summer is mostly in shade on porh. I dont think they need to be root bound to bloom. Cause I gave away 2 small cuttings of them to sis an sis inlaw an theirs are already done blooming????????????? Not root bound at all. I was thinking of rooting more cuttings to experiment again.. Will keep you in mind , with a different color or something.. PM me your address in case the weather cooperates....I may help you. thanks for looking.

dodge, the one you sent me years ago is still alive but has never bloomed. I moved it to in front of window because it was looking pitiful and it has perked up a bit. It doesn't get full sun.

ask your sister what she is doing--I was wondering about fertilizer---the only one I ues is the kind you can use every time you water---but I do not use it every time. Lynne sent me a few cuttings right after you did so I put them both in the same pot---they are growing well, but no buds or blooms yet-- I will PM you my address soon.

Holiday cactus are capable of blooming at almost any time of the year by manipulating their light and temperature. The natural changes of daylight hours will usually trigger blooming of these different Holiday cactus to coincide with their named holiday. In the fall, reduce watering and keep your Christmas cactus cooler 60°-65° at night. Protect from artificial light during night time hours. Increase watering and resume feeding when the flower buds appear. Christmas cactus and other Holiday cactus do not like to be moved to a different location once they set their buds. Rapid environmental changes can cause the flower buds to quickly drop.

Thanks MR Bill. Mine do not get fertilizer. Maybe once a year. Cooler temperatures may be the answer.. Mine stayed in back room all summer on east side . A month ago I moved them into the hall. No light regulations at all.

Below is a cactus that I bought--it may even be the red one I bought several years ago when it was blooming--(I lose track which is which) Below is a pot with the cuttings from you Dodge, mixed in with a few from Lynne. They are growing well, as you can see: I know its yours because they are marked as to which end is up & what color each cutting was. I put both of these and a sickly one down in the basement today--it is much cooler down there and there will be much more dark time. Hopefully they will bloom for me in a few months.

ok I have a question---I put 3 of my cactus pots in the basement--the main light they get is some weak light from the west--weak because it is streaming thru the small basement window. But it is in the mid 60's down there & I was hoping they would bud because of the temperature & light change that is offered to them from being down there-- what say all of you ???

I have moved mine from place to place but every place gets a little sun. I didn't know they were supposed to be in the dark. The last place it's been is right over a heat vent so the heat has been blowing on it for a week or two and now I have buds. Go figure. I'm going to leave it there and see what happens. I don't water it very often.

Carol- here's what Don's nephew's wife told me at Thanksgiving dinner (got who that is? ) Her mom owned a florist shop, and she always got upset when the bromeliads, etc sent up a budding spike. She told her to let the plant almost die - neglect it - that when plants flower they are getting ready to die, and they set forth flowers so that they become seeds and keep the plant going in next generations! At first I thought that was interesting, then I thought it was a bunch of baloney, as most plants don't up and die after they flower. But her advice to her daughter was: to not to pamper her Thanksgiving plants, and sure enough, Lee Ann gets lots of blooms each year now. I am NOT suggesting that you neglect your plant - just thought it was interesting to pass on from a florist owner. By the way... I once had a bromeliad that was very neglected and it NEVER sent up a flower stalk!

Carol, I've had my Christmas cactus in filtered sunlight for 3 years. It's been in front of a window but doesn't get direct sun. I water it when it's totally dry. This is the first year it's bloomed. I've never put mine in darkness.

Sorry to jump in, I have a related question. I had my Christmas cactus in the same window for about five years, bloomed like crazy from October through April, every year without fail. This year we moved. I had blooms in October but it suddenly stopped and now nothing. I haven't done anything different. Could it be a life cycle change or could it have been due to our move. I left where it is, have not changed anything about it, should I just leave it be and see what happens? Thanks for your thoughts :O)

Juniegirl, I have a friend who brought an almost dead Christmas cactus home from her daughters house. She watered it a little, sat it in a window and says it's bloomed every single year without moving it or doing anything except watering it once a week. Go figure.
