My friend from high school, Lisa...asked this question. Her mother is in a nursing home and wants plants in her room. Can someone suggest what plants will grow in water. As in my MOM's room. Every time I take in a plant with dirt, like a Hisbiscus, the DON says it has "bug" and has to be taken out, so, I was thinking i could take things the grow roots in water, like a sweet potato vine. Can you think of other plants that will start in water.??? THANK YOU!! She loves plants and every day asks me if some plant in my yard will grown in her room. Thank you for any suggestions.... Cindy

First let me say how not nice this is. Most nursery grown plants contain no dirt at all. But I guess potting medium is dirty to some. I doubt the water rooted plants will help with this closed mind. There are some nice air ferns out there. They need very little light and maybe a slight misting once in a while. And I think there are peace lily type plants that can survive in water. Let me keep digging. (No pun intended because this is not funny)

Thank you, Tina. And I think there are Peace Lily type plants that can survive in water. Is that the kind of plants they put in those clear vases where they put a poor, beautiful fish in the vase?

Yes, Cindy. That is one of the plants they put on top of those poor fish. (I cannot remember the name of the fish).

Yes, that is the one. A neighbor brought one of those for Jonni. I died in record time.

Cindy,... get a piece of bamboo. I have 6 pieces of it growing in water (a tall wide rose-type vase--it holds the sticks of bamboo straight up)--I was too lazy to plant it right away & NOW it is doing so well I do not feel the need to put them in dirt. BTW: they were just fresh cut (a day or so) before I put them in water, so no roots are needed for the water to help them--and eventually they will put out pretty leaves..

Philodendrums and Pothos do very well in water for quite a long time. One should refresh the water from time to time of course.
Lucky bamboo does very well also, as Carol suggested, although as we know, it's really not bamboo but a dracaena.
Spider plants can grow in water for a time as well.

I've seen a devils ivy growing in water with glass marbles in a bottle or vase.
