An old friend of mine always said to prune chrysanthemums to 4 inches high on the 4th of July. This seems rather drastic to me, however I can't find any guide for doing this. His mums always looked great in the fall. I'm in north central Kentucky.

Thanking you in advance for any advice.

I am far from an expert but:

My mother-in-law always told me that one could prune their chrysanthemums UNTIL the first of July \
(I took it to mean the first part of July)
why

that will still give them time to form buds and bloom. I do not think one has to prune them though---I always did mine, so they would not get so tall that they would droop over.
Someone with more experience should come along & help you.

I think they look best if they are kept short until early July. I just pruned mine down recently. All except one clump that produces a larger stem and leaf for some reason.
