Carol - I think your water lily plant looks great! Give it a little time and it will reward you with more leaves and flowers. Did you feed it with tomato spikes this time around?

Can't really see your iris in the last pictures - is it doing ok?

Lynne--I didnt add any spikes as there were a bunch of what I took to be fertilizer rocks in the bottom of teh grass bundle of the lily tuber.

I do not have much hope for the iris---when I planted it, it has several green spiky leaves--now there it jsut one small one--but then it is green so we shall see. The leaves of my water lily are a varigated red/green and beautiful but they, like the flower, are small. As I have said, I really think these were propagated to be grown in a smaller container garden.---but it is all very pretty just the same.

Thank you all so much

Bobbie: they all die but then new ones take their place.
As each leave begins to die---feel down and pinch off the expired green pads stem as far down as you can feel the stem, to prevent it from winding around the other "good" stems in the water--- and yes new ones come, and will all season.

Carol - you didn't leave the stuff the tuber was packed in on the tuber when you planted it, did you? I think that is what you are calling the "grass bundle"? That will impeded healthy root growth, therfore making the plant smaller than it could be. I would still fertilize with the tomato spikes. I do it often during the summer.

Right now I have 7 blooms with more buds surfacing. Granted, mine are in a much larger space and have room to spread, but yours should do just fine.

Nice frog, Carol. He's a bit different than mine - yours has those nice spots on it.

I would do a 1/2 water change - first I would scrub the sides - looks like algae from your very hot weather.

Lynne sent me a few of her "extra" water lily tubers. I planted them, the algea came....I removed them from the water, cleaned them off & then cleaned out the half barrel, & returned them to a clean water home. They have been fine since. yesterday (6-30-13) I got my first flower shewinks

here it is, Isn't it beautiful ??

That flower is fantastic, Carol! Look at the difference between that one, and your first one last year - this one is so much fuller. Your leaves look very healthy too. That's because you are becoming a seasoned water gardener. You go girl!!!
